Orange Is The New Black is (almost!) over at Netflix.
The streaming giant has announced that the prison drama will end with its upcoming seventh season.
“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” said series creator Jenji Cohan in a statement.
“I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”
Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content Netflix, said, “During production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world."
"Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever/ We will be sad to say goodbye but we will definitely be going out on a high.”
The announcement may come as a shock given that the series remains a huge hit internationally, but with Piper getting out of Litchfield at the close of Orange Is The New Black Season 6, it makes sense that the series is building towards a conclusion.
It's fair to assume the series could have continued without some of the key players because it's essentially an ensemble, but as a longtime viewer, it's good to know that the endpoint has been set.
It's difficult finding out about a series' demise after the last season has aired. At least we know the characters will all be brought to a conclusion.
As hard as it may seem with such an expansive cast, the series staged a creative resurgence during its sixth season, so I'm sure the finale will be crafted to say adieu to the longtime fans.
Orange Is The New Black was an instant hit for Netflix when it first debuted back in 2013. With groundbreaking storylines, it aimed to educate viewers on what it's really like to spend a time behind bars.
At one point, it was Netflix's most-watched series and has gone on to win countless awards.
