Grey's Anatomy Round Table: "Stairway to Heaven"

at . Comments

While fans gather in our Stairway to Heaven" Round Table include Meredith's morbid decision, the possible departure of Denny, some terrific acting efforts, and George's continued absence ...

1. Meredith attending the lethal injection: Creepy or compassionate?

McCritic: Creepy. Whether or not you believe in the death penalty, actually attending such an event - for someone you've known for mere days - goes beyond dark and twisty, Mer.

missingBurke: Creepy, although everything happens for a reason. Maybe it took this to get Cristina and Meredith on speaking terms again, in which case it would be worth it.

iheartizzie: Creepy. One wonders why Meredith would possibly take him up on that offer. The girl is a glutton for emotional punishment. Thank goodness she has Derek now.

Ghost Love

2. Is Denny finally gone?!?

iheartizzie: We pretty much know that he's not, since they tell us these things in advance now. Months in advance. I think my greatest problem with this story (besides it making no sense) is how blatantly they try to string it along. I must say, though, that Katherine Heigl and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have great chemistry. Maybe they should co-star in a Ghost remake.

McCritic: I can't even think about that question at the moment. Izzie is sick?!? I totally didn't see that coming!

missingBurke: Not according to some of the Grey's Anatomy spoilers we've read. Sounds like Denny will remain by Izzie's side as she goes through her ailment.

3. Better performance: Chandra Wilson or Samantha Mathis (Jackson's mother)?

missingBurke: Gotta be a tie. Both those actresses can turn on the water works with the best of them!

McCritic: Chandra Wilson. Mathis was great, but Dr. Bailey went through a range of emotions this week, from angry to confused to sorrowful and everything in between. Hand her an Emmy!

iheartizzie: Chandra. She's awesome. Wilson and Sandra Oh are the show's glue, and deserve their perennial Emmy consideration. Mathis' role deserves praise, though - a recurring character that the show didn't run out of town under controversial circumstances. What a feat!

4. Lexie Grey: Great girlfriend or the greatest girlfriend?

McCritic: Just a great girlfriend. While her concern over Mark was adorable, let's remember she did still break his penis. Ouch!

iheartizzie: The best. Girlfriends show up and strip for you, asking you to "teach" them. But cuddling up to Mark like that in his time of need? After breaking the very thing that makes Mark Sloan Mark Sloan? That's what keepers do.

missingBurke: I still like Mark and Callie better in terms of chemistry and overall interaction, but Lexipedia is growing on me a little each week, I must admit!

5. Got any words for George O'Malley?

iheartizzie: Bet you wish you'd taken that transfer to Mercy West right now, eh?

missingBurke: Hang in there, buddy. If characters keep dropping out of the show at this rate, there's gotta be a storyline for you at some point.

McCritic: Are you angry that Izzie keeps talking about her love for Denny? I thought she told you that you were her soulmate!

I will agree with you that George has had quite a bit of drama in the past. But not with the idea that they don't have anything to write about him anymore!!!??? George is a character with so much depth, the writers could go in so many different directions with him. And especially given what's going on with Izzie-- can you really not see how he could be written in to be involved with that? Have you never seen the intense best friends connection b/t George and Izzie?? And here Izzie is sick and talking to her dead ex-fiance, but you really honestly think that George would not notice? That angle alone would give plenty for the writers to write about I think! As a big George fan, I am not expecting the show to be O'Malley's Anatomy, but George needs more screen time. At any given time, all 5 original interns need to be on the screen. Doesn't mean we need to have a big George-as-the-main-focus storyarc, but it does mean he should be on screen interacting with the other 4, at very least. ESPECIALLY when his best friend is very sick and NO ONE else seems to have a clue that anything's going on with her!! That's my 2 cents, !greys-- I really don't see how you could think there's nothing left for them to write about at all.

i happened to love the scene when mer went to his death row thing. and when she started crying! i'm a little confused on george and why he isn't in any scenes...but then i thought about it. he's ahd the most drama, and has always had a storyline since season one. he's slept with everyone but christina and they might just not have anything to write about him anymore.

"they seem to be so self-absorped"-- referring to everyone around Izzy who care about her-- Alex, Mer, Bailey, George, etc (although I think George is hanging back out of respect for the Izzy-Alex relationship). Sorry about not being so clear as to who I meant by "they"!

Topperdog---- I think you are way off on that! We saw the guy whose organs they used and watched the Chief coerce his wife into giving them up. And, they seem to be so self-absorped and sometimes not take notice of Izzie, but if Izzie were truly dead Mer, George, Alex, Bailey--- they would all be DEVASTATED and crying their eyes out! graysforever--- I really enjoyed reading your comments. I like your point of view. I myself have not commented much on the Cristina/Hunt story, or more specificially the Hunt story, b/c I am holding my breath and sitting back and hoping that the writers will do it justice. I have an enormous respect for US soldiers. My husband's family are military-- two brothers have served in the middle east. I was glad to read your point of view that they are hitting the nail on the head in their portrayal of Hunt and his struggles.
b-t-w-- a thank you to your husband for his service for our country in Vietnam. Our soldiers are our heroes. They defend our freedoms, so that we do not have to worry about or struggle to have freedom. They are heroes, even if, at times, they don't feel like heroes. I like what you said about Denny being just as confused as Izzy. I think that's dead on. And I like your idea about them all coming together to work on the medical miracle for Izzy. That's how I envision it. I only hope that they are successful! And Mer-- I totally agree with you on Mer-- it was an act of compassion. Mer just did not forsee how it would affect her.

I'm telling ya, IZZY IS DEAD, those were her organs that went into the little boy. She wasn't on screen at all after that...where else did they get organs so fast. Remember, Denny came FOR HER...he escorted her to the hereafter...she's dead!

Compassionate. Meredith calls herself dark and twisty, but it took William to show her what "dark and twisty" was all about. It made her think about her personal relationships. Derek, Christina. What she has lost - - what she could have. She tries to protect Sadie and Christina in telling them not to do anything. She tries to take control for the first time - - not just as a person but as a Doctor. Izzy and Denny - - Denny's as confused as Izzy is. She has some kind of illness that a "medical miracle" will cure, but it will be the whole gang getting togheter to solve it. Kind of liks a "House" thing. " Chritina and Hunt are so great together. They are the "Ying" and the "Yang" (sorry about that). Having a husband who experienced much the same thing in Vietnam, the writers are all too "close" to the real thing when they write for him. Oh how I love Miranda Bailey. So principaled, so on her game so vulernable, so full of fath (sorry some of my eys won't wor anymore). As for George, everyone goes through their "arc". Think back to the other seasons. Sometimes there's more MerDer, Christina/Burke, Addy/Der, Addy/Mark, Alex/Rebecca, George/Callie, George/Izzy, George/Lexie, etc. Everybody gets their arc. They have been doing a lot of George with his Dad, his failed internship and marriage, I think they just want to expand other characters. Like finding out that Derek's father was killed over a watch, etc. I am dark and twisty myself, always thinking the glass is half empty. I think it's great that writers think that other people look at things the same way, but they make it funny and entertaining. Remember - - this is supposed to be entertainment.

I'm torn between creepy and compassionate. In a way, Meredith loves pain and emotional battles, so I did't think it was completely out of place to be there. I really did think that maybe Derek would go, just because he's so pro-punishment. Still, I loved that he was outside waiting...and that he was the first to comfort her after such a bad day. These two are really growing. So that last scene, when Mer broke down, has to go as one of my favorites. The can kill Izzie off that I wouldn't notice. She annoys me. Whatever. Mark/Lexie are trying to hard to be the new MerDer, even going to the fact that Lexie now broke Mark's penis. Didn't Mer do that already? Little Grey is not Big Grey, it's part of her charm, I guess. I love the new Big Grey so let's not turn Lexie into Mer, PLEASE.

Dr. Cook: Yup, that's totally the storyline. My mom LOVES GH. I should get her hooked on Grey's now since they're just recycling stories...

i will be infuriated if they take izzie off the show. shonda rhimes said they were not doing the brain tumor so either she was lying or they came up with a new disease. i dont understand why katherine would want off the show. i hope that she sticks with her contract cause she is my favorite. i might even stop watching if they kill her off.

That's ok, IheartIzzie. I am a huge George fan and I knew you were poking fun at the writers, not him. A little sense of humor, guys. I know I am frustrated as all of you about the lack of george but if we don't laugh, we'll cry, right.

Grey's Anatomy Season 5 Episode 13 Quotes

Derek: She's in the car, she's in the car and she won't stop crying.
Cristina: Did you propose?
Derek: No. She went to William's execution.

Meredith: I know you don't understand me. I don't understand me. I wanted to show him compassion. That's why I went. That's the reason. And it was horrible... it was horrible.
Derek: It's okay.
