Gossip Girl Season Premiere Review: "Belles Du Jour"

at . Comments

We loved the season premiere of Gossip Girl.

Beginning in an exotic locale in the aftermath of the previous season finale, "Belles Du Jour" continued the trend of seasons two and three, but was superior for several reasons.

First, the Parisian setting marked new territory for the show, specifically for Blair and Serena. For the former, it's a part of her legacy. For the latter, a part of her transition.

Serena and Blair in Paris

The episode did a terrific job of picking up the pieces from last May and charting a course for the new season, splitting time between picturesque Paris and the familiar UES.

For S, that meant turning the page. For B, living with the pain of what Chuck did. Despite being in a place she cherishes so much, the queen still feels out of her element.

That's because the devastation of Chuck's actions still lingers, and despite her best efforts, she can't shake him ... or the fact that she feels trapped in Serena's shadow.

The revelation that S is going to Columbia now certainly didn't help matters.

These two will always be close, but will always be at odds. It's a complex friendship, and we love watching it evolve, especially when it involves the occasional dip in a fountain.

As for Chuck, we learn that he survived the Prague shooting, but what happened this summer remains shrouded in mystery. He has a new companion, Eva, and goes by Henry.

Does he have amnesia? Or has he assumed, subconsciously or otherwise, a new persona, aided by someone who isn't used to his world, and someone who won't judge him?

It was great, in a way, to see so little of Ed Westwick this week. It made his scenes all the more powerful, and added to the intrigue of Henry, Eva and their new life together.

Next week, we'll learn the truth when Chuck's whereabouts alarm Lily and Serena, and Blair will reunite with him in the City of Light, confronting the man who broke her heart.

Outdoor Cafe

Meanwhile, in New York, Nate is taking a page from Chuck’s book - literally - to numb his pain. Except thumbing through the little black Bass book isn't really doing it for him.

It takes a chance run-in with Juliet Sharp (guest star Katie Cassidy) to make him realize that he's not over Serena. We could tell immediately that Juliet has her own agenda.

The question is what. There's chemistry between them, but is it all part of some devious plan to ruin Nate ... or Serena? The final shot of Juliet's bulletin board was awesome.

We thought for a split second that she just might be Gossip Girl herself. While that might be a stretch, Juliet is clearly plotting something elaborate and we're hooked on her.

On the Humphrey front, Jenny is in Hudson, having been banished and/or having fled for her after thwarting Chair's engagement and stabbing about a million fans in the gut.

Dan might wish he could run away. He's LIVING WITH GEORGINA and her baby, who she says is his, and Dan sure acts like he's Milo's dad - although there has been no test.

The fact he's going along with this, and kept it secret from everyone until Vanessa eventually busted him, is dubious to say the least. Does he simply not want to know the truth?

Either way, his sleep-deprived interactions with V provided some of the night's comic relief, and watching disheveled Dan try to keep up his facade and care for Milo is hilarious.

We also can't forget this is Georgina Sparks. Her manipulative powers are well documented. It's still unclear if the baby is a Humphrey, and her actions are beyond suspicious.

Remember how Blair, Dorota and Vanya had her shipped off to Eastern Europe? Well, at one point G has a strange phone conversation in a different language when she's alone.

She is so shady and we love it so hard.

It will be difficult to top three big mysteries set in motion, the introduction of Katie Cassidy and healthy doses of humor and Parisian fashion, but hopefully this is just the beginning of a terrific fourth season. Travail bien fait, Gossip Girl.

I really liked this episode. The clothes were amazing, for starters :) Nate looked rough. I guess that was the point, after a summer of debauchery LOL Chuck...sees an opportunity to put his past behind him and really have a life. It won't last, of course, but he's been given a second chance (or so he believes), and he needs to make peace with himself before he can make it with others. Clemence looks older than I thought she should. Maybe it's the fair skin with the fine blonde hair, but...

I can say I didn't miss Jenny at all, but hope Eric comes in pretty soon! And felt so bad for Lily, getting a phone call saying that your stepson might have washed up on a river bank...that's awful, especially because you know Rufus will be an uncaring ass, because it's Chuck.

I literally stopped and wondered about it when they used Tally Weijl, too! But then I figured, Serena has some questionable outfits, and maybe thought she might as well save some money on them? Idk, except that it would be novelty, because they don't have the stores in America??? But like someone else said, it's nothing extraordinary...we do have places like it in the U.S.
Cannot believe Rufus: um, Jenny is 16, not 10! And she's made some more questionable choices than having sex with someone...ahem, drug dealer! And then to actually let Dan sign the birth certificate?! wth...And Dan, an even bigger WTH, because G's been scamming you since the 1st season, and you never learn! I can see waiting til the baby is born, but after that there is no danger in paternity tests, so what was keeping you?! If I saw the birth cert correctly (and assuming that this ep took place near real time), that kid is over a month old!
Juliet looked well-planned out, and at first I found it unbelievable that she got a table at Norma's next to Nate...but I think the waitstaff can pretty easily be bribed...though Nate doesn't seem like a reservation type of guy. She's obviously shady, but of course, Nate isn't the brightest, so it'll take him a while to catch on. If he ever does.
Blair and Serena talking the entire ep about not doing this "high school drama" and then doing pretty much exactly that: classic. And there is a Louis in the Grimaldi fam, but i thought he was only like 16, maybe? That's pretty young, I think, since isn't Blair supposed to be turning 20 soon?
Chuck's part at the end seemed to go down pretty much as I thought it would. And of course, he is a "Prince." lol, I found that funny...and I cannot wait until he gets found out by Blair and Serena.

The premiere was awesome, sort of a return to the form of the season one premiere with all the music and montages of stores and the cities. I hope they keep Juliet, because her stalking of the NJBC could be a pretty awesome storyline. All in all, I'm kind of looking forward to the rest of the season!

website suggestions???

OMG! For the moment I really thought that Juliet was Gossip Girl! ;O

using tally weijl was ridiculous - the brand's really ordinary, no extra excitement shopping there even for the average girl anywhere in europe.

Soooo...when did we get rid of the round table?? I must have missed the memo....

loved the episode:)) it was really great.. from what I've seen in the promo for the next episode chuck says: from today there is no chuck bass(or smth like that).I don't think he should change a lot cuz in the end he is who he is..another thing i didn't like is Rufus...he blames chuck for the whole thing with jenny, but it's not his fault, it's not like jenny is innocent little girl, it was her choice to make. Rufus definitely should remember that the place he lives in and all the money are chucks..

guys..i think gossip girl is back...!!

Gossip Girl Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Serena: So what does it say about Chuck?
Blair: I couldn't be less interested. Serena gives her a look. No new posts. He's been MIA since he left town this spring.
Serena: What does it say about us?
Blair: "Ooh la la! Paris is burning and Serena and Blair lit the match." Of course your flame is hotter than mine. Everyone knows that the only guy who's been in my pants all summer is the tailor at Pierre Balmain.
Serena: And whose fault is that? B, just as many guys have flirted with you. I just happen to have a thing for French waiters.
Blair: And bartenders. And museum docents. Anyone on a Vespa or bicycle. Or wearing Zadig & Voltaire.

Serena: Blair what are you doing? We said we wouldn't check Gossip Girl all summer.
Blair: Summer's almost over.
