The Vampire Diaries Review: The Gilberts Go Rogue!

at . Comments

Elena and Jeremy must have spent a few hours catching up on Jack Bauer 's typical plan of action or reading Sarah Palin's biography prior to "The Sacrifice."

Because both Gilbert siblings went rogue on The Vampire Diaries this week. Their independently-planned actions resulted in a dangerous visit from Elijah and an heroic decision by Stefan.

But did the latter cost him Elena forever? Will leaving his love under the protective care of his brother truly become the biggest mistake Stefan ever made?

Spell Casting

What makes The Vampire Diaries so addictive isn't merely its never-ending series of twists and turns, although I must stretch my neck before bed every Thursday night because my head has been spinning at such an abnormal rate for an hour.

Instead, it's the emotions that underlie every action. More than any installment I can recall, "The Sacrifice" moved at lightening speed, scarcely taking a moment to let the characters, and viewers, breathe.

At the end, though, there was no major surprise or suspenseful cliffhanger. There was simply the reminder that this show works so well because we're so invested in its core relationships. If Elijah specializes in yanking out hearts, Stefan and Damon take a very different tact:

They tug at heartstrings.

Of course, there were plenty of developments that resulted in plenty of questions/notes this week, as well. To wit:

  • Luka acknowledged that his father asked him to get close to Bonnie, but does this mean he's aware of everything Jonas is up to with Elijah? My guess: No. My prediction: Luka will play a role in thwarting whatever evil plan his dad has in mind.
  • Either lay one on Jeremy or cut him loose, Bonnie. Don't play with his heart like you play with various spells. Also, pretty sure she had a witch-gasm when she and Luka first combined forces.
  • The brief confrontation between Elijah and Damon? Awesome. But there's something even scarier than this Original's power. It's that experience combined with a rational mind that actually thinks plans though and realizes Elena is in a safe position alongside the Salvatores. For now.
  • The discovery of Mason's taped transition was a tad too convenient... but, hey, it gave us more of him shirtless.
  • Poor, poor Matt.
  • Hey, an Alaric sighting! No wonder the guy hasn't been involved in storylines recently. He's been... busy.
  • I liked the small touch of a sunset being Slater's computer wallpaper, as well as the meta references to Kristen Stewart and Alice freaking out over seeing Damon Salvatore.
  • Elena's plan to turn herself over to Klaus: Brave or stupid or both?
  • Included in this week's Vampire Diaries music is a cover by Kat Graham.
  • No way Stefan really gets it on with Katherine next week, as this promo teases... right?

I'll leave you with one of the Vampire Diaries quotes that will leave fans buzzing over the next few days:

Stefan: Promise me, whatever happens, you'll protect her.
Damon: Promise. | permalink

As has been reported already, Damon is undergoing a personal transformation from wiseass unfeeling badguy type to the opposite, and I am sure he WILL protect Elena with his life. He truely loves her and we have seen how he hates being lied and manipulated with his heart by others =Katherine. He has already made his statement for us with his confession to Elena. Damon doesn't want to hurt his brother anymore and cares about him sincerely. Stefan's apology to Damon and confession that he did it cause he didn't want to be alone and wanted his brother went a very long way to mending Damon's resentment and hurt from what he always thought was a uncaring act by his brother(turning him with blood to feed). Damon's big secret is that he is a "purist". He does care deeply. Damon gives himself to you he is there for life! Extremely romantic. If only he would stop making weird eye and face gestures everytime he talks. It gets old.

Great episode!!!
Damon and Elena chemistry was awesome!
I never thought Stefan would end up in the tomb with Katherine, her smile was priceless, i just cant hate her lol and i kind of like her with Stefan.
I really like Caroline and Tyler bonding.
Poor Jeremy! when is he going to find a girl that returns his feelings.
Cant wait for the next episode!

Bonnie made it pretty clear that they can't feel that way about eachother and she's not exactly leading him on in any way, so I don't see how she's "playing with his heart".

I think that it is awsome! Damon is so sexy I would choose him over stephan any day!

in my opinion Elijah is just keeping Elena safe until it's the right time for them to do whatever they need to do. Damon and Elena?wow, amazing chemistry between those two. I don't believe the whole Stefan_katherine though, not very Stefanish, i think is either a dream or a mindtrick. Katherine's smile once STefan is in the tomb...awesomeee! And what's with everybody saying that jeremy is 16!bonnie is still in high school!it's a one year difference!!!!! (altough...vicki was older than jeremy but youger than Matt.. i think i'm lost...maybe Jeremy is 15...)

Maybe Elijah wants her for himself :) Regarding Bonnie and Luca (Luka?)--people bond under a variety of circumstances. I'm sure that channeling another witch's powers is a very strong, very intimate thing. They are bonded, for better or worse, now...

Ok,,I'm super excited Stephan and Katherine hookup.
I think Stephan Is still inlove with her.
Why else would he keep a picture of her!?
Plus I'm a Damon (so sexy!) fan!! Elena and
Damon will end up together in the end atleast I'm
Hoping. Elena is an idiot if she takes
Stephan back. Now Bonnie is really starting to get on my nerves
With this other warlock guy. She barely knows him
And she letting him in knowing she shouldn't trust
Anybody with everything going on. At the same time
Leading Jeremy on. I hope she regrets it and Jeremy
Finds someone else. Caroline and Tyler are perfect together even tho hes a wolf and she a vamp! --I just really want Damon to be happy he deserves it!

I dont think Elijah is working for Clause anymore. I mean what would be his reason for breaking the curse, he can already walk in the sun, you could argue its so the werwolf's dont break it but its been established their on the endangered species list. And why would he let Damon keep her instead of taking her to clause himself? I think he's working a angle but i dont think its for clause.

Another spell biding episode of The Vampire diaries...
*Damon & Elena confrontation was Hot, it showed how much Damon cares, C'mon he can break her arm if she get on with her stupid plan. *Matt is back to make us sure Caroline will Hook up Tyler... OMG I'm waiting for that to happen... Wouldn't that be Hot His Bite can Kill her (Obviously not the Human bite "I hope so") *I wanted Jeremy & Bonnie to Kiss but I think she made the wise decision, she just mate Luca n Jeremy is eventually is 16 younger & Stupid as well, He went to Katherine (that was the stupidest thing he ever did besides consuming Drugs) Love Katherine more than Elena (which is scary bx both are Nina Dubrev but still I want Katherine to Stay n Elena, mmm Welll get Sexier ;-)) Elijah is Scarier than Ever and I love how Easily withing a Blink he does things. Wow he is growing on me Big Time!

Jeremy only took some of the ashes, which means Bonnie had the rest. Why didn't she just throw the remaining ashes on Katherine so Jeremy could leave the tomb? Problem solved and no Stefan in the tomb with her.
