Glee Review: Making a Comeback!

at . Comments

For the second consecutive Tuesday, Glee recaptured the fun-loving, toe-tapping, knee-slapping tone that made me fall in love with it in the first place.

And on an installment aptly titled "Comeback," I can pinpoint the reasons why:

The Justin Bieber Experience. Now this is how you do a tribute episode! Both Bieber songs fit in perfectly with the ongoing storyline, while the show managed to honor this artist and simultaneously mock him. Not too badly, as Glee clearly respects what the 16-year old has accomplished. But the incessant gushing was clearly a wink at Bieber and his related, scream-inducing Fever.

Tribute Band

Santana vs. Sue. You won't find a bigger fan of the latter, Sue-per character than yours truly. But the show veers toward the ridiculous when too much attention is focused on the cheerleading coach's schemes (shooting girls out of canons, dressing up like The Grinch, etc). Santana is actually a far more logical villain, as she's a member of New Directions and can worm her way into relationships and situations. See tonight, for example.

She's no slouch in the one-liner department, either, telling Sam that he has "full visitation rights" to the twins that "reside on her rib cage" and thinking James Earl Jones shot Martin Luther King.

Moreover, this episode actually incorporated Sue into the bigger picture, doing it realistically and intriguingly: she's the vocal coach of Aural Intensity?!? Oh, the possibilities.

Puck's hair.

The Finn/Sam rivalry: I could question how Finn immediately went from being the inspiring leader of the football team on the post-Super Bowl episode to someone unabashedly trying to steal a fellow student's girlfriend... but I'd rather pretend that episode didn't exist and just take in the feud between this pair. There's no lesson trying to be taught here. It's just an enjoyable back-and-forth.

No Kurt. It's not Chris Colfer's fault, but this character sucks the fun out of every scene. As I outlined in my most recent column, Ryan Murphy isn't shy about admitting to an agenda when it comes to Kurt. And that's fine. It occasionally has its place. But it can also make Glee feel more like a Sunday School lesson than a musical comedy.

Artie's Post-Valentine's Day girlfriend funk theory.

Sue's plaid track suit.

The hospital visit. Because most of the episode was filled with jokes that addressed serious issues (i.e. Brittany stealing Rachel's comeback thunder via her unique style choice), Will and Sue's singalong with the cancer patients came across as adorable, rather than preachy. It was a beautiful respite from the laughter and a reminder, as Will himself said, that glee club can be very weird at times, but it can also do a lot of good.

I'll never forgive you for this, William, Sue said through tears. Great stuff.

What did everyone else think? Are they actually teasing a reconciliation for Finn and Rachel already? How awesome is Lauren? Discuss the episode in our Glee forum, in the Comments section below and download your favorite Glee music from it now!

These episodes are more over the top each week than the last. Sue is out of control and the Bieber theme was so funny. Obviously no one takes Justin seriously and yet at the same time he is out there enough that no one can ignore him either. I'm just surprised that Sue didn't have a plan BEFORE attending the Glee club. I can hardly believe she was really suicidal. I think they do a great job producing the music and I guess that's why their music is #1 for downloads on iTunes.

Lelarose I LMAO when reading your feelings about comeback cuz I feel the same way. The only thing that was wonderful was the diva duet. I don't give a flip about Finn/Quinn at all. They could leave the show as far as I'm concerned. Beiber music doesn't bother me. It's the stupid plot. Now I love Artie's voice and that is all I can say about that. Rachel is back and trying to be confident and as always being shut down by even her so-called friend Mercedes which I've been wanting as a relationship since Season 2 started. She never demanded a solo What the world are the writers trying to do to Rachel demonize her still when she's broken shattered friendless and wearing her heart on her shoulders that's when they wrote Finn's comment to her at the end of the episode you should write it I think she's making a comeback. Is this the only way for Rachel to have any self-confidence is from a pathetic hypocritical loser. His actions speak for themselves. Now Corey's acting is exceptional to make Finn so much this way. I'm so disappointed also after the two of the best episodes since the pilot. Thriller and Silly Love Songs.
Please pay attention to your loyal fanbase who are not tweens thru twenties yr olds. Play classics show tunes in with the top forties like last season. I want to remain positive about Glee but my senses tell me that this is the path Glee is taking and as far as I'm concerned it is on a true nose dive.

Even though I think there is a Journey song they haven't done...(and would love to hear it), I don't get the big uproar over the Bieber songs. They were fun and it was fun to see the guys (without Finn) sing and dance. And I liked the chalk. Too many whiners about this episode. I was happy that we got a break from the bullied Kurt, but why not just have the normal Kurt for once? I remember him getting thrown into a dumpster and thinking it was funny like the rest of the world. Now the overly sensitive fun-sucking people would throw a fit if that ever happened to Kurt again. Loosen up people! And yes, what about the bullying of Rachel by the students and the staff? Why isn't anyone in an uproar over that? Talk about being a ton hypocritical. It's a TV comedy and not a psych project for a college research paper.

Good ep. Songs actually moved the storylines and characters along. But too much Beiber ass kissing for my liking. I did like the songs but like Lauren in the end I'm reminded that they're done by a 12yr old. Finn is such a hypocritical dick! Rachel needs to stay away from him. She can do better. That goes for Sam too. Finn and Quinn deserve each other for the shit they've done to the people they claim to love.

I wanted to hate this episode just because they were doing Beiber but I loved it. They did find a way to make fun of this Beiber kid and respect his artistry all at the same time. It was amusing. I loved the human moment of Sue and Shue at the hospital, only to have them return to their usual rivalry at the end. I also loved that Lauren got a fun little solo. She's increasingly becoming one of my favorite characters on the show. She's fantastically funny. I love Kurt but didn't miss him in this episode. I also love that Mercedes got some decent screentime and got to sing some more, because she has an amazing voice but rarely gets the time to shine!

Loved the episode. This reviewer has got serious hate towards Kurt. He's a great addition towards the show. And Chris plays him so well. The absence of Kurt in the episode was good and natural but I did miss him. To the person who said this show is about New Directions: wrong. It is entitled Glee. This gives the illusion it's either about happiness or Glee clubs. I like the Warblers Glee club.

*don't feel

About the bieber fever, I have to admit that I just heard "baby" a few times before but I never heard the second one so for me, the Bieber thing was not annoying. As a french viewer, it can happen that I don't know some songs so...
As for the episode, I like it! My heart belongs to Rachel and I'm glad to have her back. She lose herself way to long into Finn and as I really don't like him (never had, never will), I'm happy they're not together anymore. I'm just desesperated because they will eventually be back together at some point (cause they are "endgame") even Rachel deserve much better! She deserve EPIC! and I don't fell that will Finn.

Anna maria

I loved this episode but I HATE Beiber! Come on, no girl over 14 likes him, no way would the girls act that way! That said, what was PUCK'S HAIR! omg I laughed so hard, it was terrible!
I get Sam for breaking up with Quinn and I'm sad but gong with Santana was a terrible mood! He just sunk to her level! I want him and Quinn back!

Guys, if you observe... Quinn disappeared when they are singing "Sing"... Part where she was at the back right side of Sue.. suddenly she disappeared.. to be exact , if you downloaded it.. 37:25 and 37:26... LOL!
