Hawaii Five-0 Review: Oh, the Horror

at . Comments

"Ka Iwi Kapu" = Sacred Bones

This episode should serve as proof that TV shows should never attempt to capitalize on holidays. Even with a Halloween slant, the biggest horror on Hawaii Five-0 this week was the hour I spent watching it.

Let me be perfectly clear: this was the worst episode of this show I have ever watched. It can only be broken in to two parts, bad and worse. See below.

Robert Englund on Hawaii Five-0

First and foremost, the episode ended without a clear closure to the case we started on: Who killed Kat and Christian, and buried them? While it might have been the registered nurse who blew himself up, or the mortuary funeral director who was embalmed alive, the dialogue made it sound like these two were being paid by someone else who was severing connections by killing them.

Beyond the garbled story, we had a special appearance by Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger himself.. Sadly, as with previous guest stars, Englund had one important scene that lasted about five minutes where he was allowed to be appropriately creepy. That was it, aside from an intro. Why does Hawaii Five-0 continue to under-utilize such big names?!?

Additionally, this "Halloween episode" featured a bevy of classic horror movie tropes such as: no power for the lights in the funeral home, (but power to run the embalming station), bad guys climbing out of a coffin, and (my personal favorite) the team decided to split up and search alone, just to name a few. While any of these tropes could have been used for fun and could work in the setting of the story, putting as many as they did in went beyond insulting my intelligence - and straight into beating up my common sense.

The single most horrible aspect of this episode was Danny's role.  Given how hard we have seen Danny work to shield Grace from his bachelor lifestyle, there is NO WAY I would believe he would willingly take her trick-or-treating at a motel.

While I was still trying to let it go, he promptly went to a crime scene and desecrated sacred burial grounds in the name of "catching a killer" because he didn't want to wait for the priest to arrive and give blessing. Really?!? While Five-0 may take some liberties with the laws and conducts on the street, none of them has ever disregarded other cultural beliefs. This was a horribly written plot device to throw in "ghost" or "spirits" to make it fit into the Halloween theme.

If stomping over beliefs and embarrassing himself with his daughter wasn't enough, the powers that be decided this was a good episode for us to meet Dr. Gabby Asano, who Danny took on a date. Thankfully for Danny, much like Englund's screen time, Autumn Reeser only visited with us for about 10 minutes. Not nearly enough time for Danny to insult her heritage!

I know that many returning TV Fanatic readers will be disappointed that Lori only got bashed on the head (and wasn't killed by whoever killed the funeral director). I was personally glad she didn't get killed, but I also couldn't reconcile myself to the point that I could give a crap about what costume she had been in when the call came in about the murders. I know it was meant to be some comic relief, but when added to the other poorly penned parts of the episode, it just came off as forced and contrived.

There is good news, though, readers: Greg Grunberg guest stars next Monday night! Let's hope we see him for more than 30 seconds.

@ Mls - Don't think Steve is too good for anyone at all. I liked him with Cat & even saw sparks with him & Kensi for the whole 2 seconds she was on. more sparks than he has ever had with Lori anyhow. I just don't think Lori is well matched for him. They have no chemistry and she's doesn't fit on the show. If we have to go down the love lane route for Steve, I welcome anyone else at this point besides Lori!

I don't agree that Danny is out of character or silly or being sidelined. We see as much of Danny as we did last year really. And Scott Caan is working on some projects so the showrunners can't help that. Having said that I agree with everyone else on Lori. She doesn't fit and she's always there whenever Steve and Danny do most of their scenes. I hate the way Steve keeps asking her opinion and stuff it's so forced and false. I don't buy he'd bring her in like that, she was forced on him he'd be distrustful. I hope against hope they lose the character or totally reduce her role and bring back Kono and Chin for the love of God!

I agree that this was a terrible show. Not only Danny's disrespect over the burial grounds, but the silly dialogue he was given to say made it seem like he was some jerky school kid, especially how he acted when he saw the woman he had dated. Lori is ruining this show and does not fit in at all. She is getting all the attention that Kono, Chin and Danny used to get, and as a result they are being left behind with either nothing to do or else act silly. It's a shame that what was a good show is being destroyed.

I was PRAYING that Lori would have been dead. Come on guy, you just embalmed a live guy, kill her!
Not a great episode. I was confused.
Loved seeing Autumn Reeser back. SO GLAD to see Little Gracie. I am glad she was back. Can we please bring back wifey now. Let them live happily ever after. Why is Lori getting all the work Kono should be getting. Yes she was gone for what 2 episodes 3 tops but no way would the members give her crappy office work. Lori somehow managed to get on McGarrett's trust side in that short time. FALSE

Odd that the comments on here are so negative when on other sites a lot of people think this is one of the best eps this season. I don't think Danny was out of character, he's always been a nag with no sensitivity but he is funny. Lori has to go agree on this but it's not enough to ruin the ep. This one had a lot of fun stuff in it. Loved the quality McDanno moments and the end of the ep was brilliant.

Get rid of those females Kono is suppose to be a man. Put Kono in a special assignment as a pole dancer and kill off the other one. They are just not realistic. The show sucks with them in it. Hawaii 5/0 is a man's show.

Hawaii 5-0 was a man's show meaning it was more realistic with men running the show. Kono was a man not a fragile female who the show thinks she can take on everyone. People not realistic. Get rid of those females they are ruining the show. If you want to make it more interesting put Kono in a special assignment as a pole dancer and the other one gets killed.

Well, frankly speaking I think ep07 was somewhat much better than the last 6 eps this season, coz I can see Danny and Kono got more screentime this ep which I'm so satisfied with already.TUT About one thing,u r right,Jim!Lori should've been killed by whoever'd like to do us this huge favour ASAP! Anyway I definitely did not like the way Danny was written in this episode,it was so stupid and terrible. Oh I get it,it was halloween special and they had to add some ghosts or spirits stuff to the show.So they messed up both the criminal case and Danny's character. I have to say the ending part saved Danny, that moving scene was so adorable. For me,Danny Steve Chin and Kono, they are just like such a happy family together.

Geez, just get over yourselves!!! It was a fun Halloween show...you're trying to look too deep. I love, love this show and was very concerned with the first episodes up to when they brought Kono finally back. Now I feel like they're back in the groove again. Lori isn't that bad. I've grown to like her and think she'll play off Steve perfectly. You all seem to think he's too good for anyone...I love they way he gets all boyish around her now. Shows a human side to him besides the tough guy...going to be fun watching the rest of this year. I just hope Danno gets laid soon...he needs it...BAD...

After watching this episode, I am actually thinking about not watching this show ever again. I think I have had enough. And believe me, this is coming from a fan who watches each episode over and over. I live for this show. But this freakin' Lori character has ruined my fav show. They are trying too hard to make her as the best character ever. GIVE IT UP! I almost puked when I heard wonder woman as her alter ego. And Why did Steve want to know who she went to the party with? That's not believable at all. Steve has no chemistry with her! AND not only is she taking quality dialogue from Danno, Kono, Chin...I swear she was on the screen more that Steve. WTF??? I am so pissed right now! No offense to the actress but she is ruining my show.

Lori: Why are you staring at me?
Danny: I'm imagining who Lori Weston's alter-ego might be.... Wonder Woman!
Lori: No!

Max: I came directly to work after a Halloween party.
Danny: Come on, you don't secretly have this thing where you live dressing up like you're in the Matrix.
Max: The two concepts are not mutually exclusives.
