The Vampire Diaries Midseason Report Card: B

by at . Comments

With many TV Fanatic favorites on a midseason break, we'll be using the next couple weeks as an opportunity to assess various programs and offer advice on where they should go in 2012.

First, our Grey's Anatomy critic offered her thoughts on the first half of that show's eighth season. Now, I'm excited to pore over The Vampire Diaries, hand out a midseason grade and see where readers stand on television's most twist-filled drama.

Poster for The Vampire Diaries

Best Character: Klaus. It takes a lot to beat out Damon Salvatore and his snark, smile and smolder. But Klaus has given us a lot... and then some! He's the ideal villain: sympathetic, cruel, multi-dimensional, funny. Joseph Morgan portrays this character with an eerie calmness, making those moments when he loses it even more impactful. Plus, the addition of Klaus has led to the addition of Rebekah. Major points there.

Worst Character: Katherine. She disappears. She shows up. She always has some mysterious agenda. The writers seem to have lost their grasp on this ancient vampire a long time ago. Nothing more than a plot device at this point, Katherine really has to disappear one final time - forever.

Best Episode: "The End of the Affair." New light was shed on Stefan's friendship with Klaus; we flashed back to Chicago; we first met Rebekah; we were introduced to Mikael. A packed episode provided viewers with fresh sympathies for Klaus, Elena and Stefan.

Worst Episode: "Ghost Town." Easily the worst installment in show history, it seemingly existed solely to bring back former characters. Sadly, not even the handsome face of Tyler Kinney could save this boring, nonsensical hour of filler.

Most Interesting Development: Tyler as a hybrid. What does this mean for Forwood? Where do Tyler's loyalties lie? How many more breakfasts will the guy spill on his shirt? The directions the show can now go with Tyler know as few bounds as the affection our site has for his girlfriend.

Biggest Surprise: Klaus killed his own mother, and was being hunted by his own father! Gotta combine this storyline into one major shocker. We figured the history of the Originals would be rich. We just didn't expect it to take even Rebekah by surprise.

Best Bromance: Alaric and Damon. Granted, there are no other contenders (no offense, Matt and Jeremy), but these two deserve their own shout-out for simply making me crack up so often. Damon is the only person allowed to refer to his pal as Ric.

Most Misused Character: Bonnie. All she does is pop into a scene, cast a spell and leave. This may belong in the following category, but the show needs to round Bonnie out to be more than just an angst-filled witch. Fortunately, this appears to be the plan. Look who is on her way to Mystic Falls.

Hopes for 2012: Full-on Delena. I'm not just saying this because the pair won our poll for Best Teen Couple, and it would be nice if they were actually a couple. But the series needs to make a choice in either direction. No more teasing, writers. You've done an admirable job developing the feelings between Elena and Damon. They feel real and believable at this point. Stefan may not want his humanity, but Damon does want the girl who makes his rise to the surface. Give her to him.

Also: a bubble bath scene for Rebekah; even more Caroline; the return of Elijah; the opening of a competing restaurant for the Grill.

i agree with the Delena thing, i mean.. i believe in true love, well kind of and tho i love Stelena, they really cannot be together right now. i guess they won't be for some time for sure (if ever again), b/c even if Stefan doesn't want his humanity, it's as Katherine said, the worst thing about being a vampire. i guess he'll feel guilty for messing it all up, behaving like a jerk and doing all those awful things to Elena and Damon (tho yes, he saved Damon's life again, sacrificed everything he ever loved just for him, but still, even when compelled, he did terrible things not just to the ones he loves, but to innocent people as well). he cannot forgive himself right away, if ever. Elena probably will. anyway, as i said, i love Stelena and i'm not such a big fan of Delena, i enjoy them, but don't particularly love them, i think the writers should either end this or go with a full-on romance. would be akward, tho, with Stefan around (i mean, he can't be gone forever from Mystic Falls), but those longing looks and "innocent" touches are not doing it for me. so please, end it or just roll with it.

a B? seriously? its the vampire diaries. you dont give it a B! best charachter: elena
(shes learnt to let loose and she's willing to let go of stefan. hell yeah elena!) worst charachter: bonnie best episode: the end of the affair. worst episode: ghost town. most misused charahcter: KATHERINE PIERCE! (i hate ppl saying she should die. nina dobrev plays her to perfection. they just need to focus on katherine's history more. something, anything. SHE IS KICK-ASS!) hopes for 2012: DELENA! damon and elena. elena and damon. you know... we want delena! and katherine to get a good storyline.

this season is epic you know it's beyond expectations starting with Stefan and his contradicting emotions and being pld pals with Klaus Woohoo! to that then Elena and Damon hot and cold Jeremy and the ghosts and Bonnie then comes the originals drama Klaus Rebecca Mikeal (and surprisingly I pity Klaus poor Klaus and Rebecca so...) Tyler and Caroline and Tyler now is a faithful demenion for Klaus the Hybrid Tyler and Caroline's dad what's up with him? and Alaric and his phase and finally Matt joining the picture Woohoo! there's amazing moments that it would take me 1000 pages to write great job seriously guys and thank you for giving us this amazing series can't wait for the return it would feel like forever but it's ok it deserve it.

Best Character: Caroline hands down. She managed to keep viewers interested, the whole forwood relationship is awesome Worst CharacteR: Elena hands down. Boring bland mary sue with no defining personality traits nor usefulness in story. Her entire plotline seems to be following after Damon and Stefan and swooning over them while being useless. She is Bella Swan with a bit better actress. Certainly NOT a lead character material. Best Episode: Ghost World. Completely unconnected to boring originals or boring DES triangle. had more scenes with Bonnie actually doing something. Worst Episode: Ordinary People. I am sorry, but what the hell was that? 48 minutes of obvious boring material. The most boring vampire origin story possible, the start of wussyfication of Klaus and completely lame original familyh with historical inconsistencies and retcons. Most Interesting Development: hmmm, hard one since pretty much everything was obvious and expected and boring so Ill stay silent on this one. Biggest Surprise: None yet again. Most Misused Character: Bonnie. She remains the "fix-theplot" tool of writers instead of becoming a character. Hopes for 2012: resolving the originals and ripper steff plotlines quickly, stopping the forced SE and DE development, giving more screentime to caroline and less screentime to Elena Cardboard, finally getting rid of Germy and Matt, stopping the woobiefication of Klaus and Damon, shifting away from the focus of annoying and boring DES triangle of doom towards developing characters that could be interesting and matter, namely Alaric, Caroline, Bonnie, etc. Overall while most of S1 was in between B+ to A-, second half of S2 was VERY weak D with minus, this is C with minus.

Bring back Rebekah and Elijah to conspire to help kill Klaus! Also, to find out who else is in the coffins.

Worst character: Jeremy for sure, Underused
Best episode: The hybrid, When elenas feelings for damon actually showed, and Homecoming, when elena was finally accepting the truth about stefan (although hes good now) and accepting that she has to let him go, otherwise she will lose damon.

Most Misused Character: Alaric. I would love to see a bit more off Alaric.
Hopes for 2012: Hope they bring back Elijah and Rebekah soon!

Best Character: 4 season 3...Stefan he has deff shined and became so much more entertaining to watch...Paul is doing a great job
Worst Character: Jeremy maybe
Best Episode: THE RECKONING, wow just WOW
Worst Episode: ummm "Ghost Town" only thing I enjoyed was seeing Lexi
Most Interesting Development: Klaus killed his mama and blamed it on daddy and had his family hiding and running from their father for over 1000 yrs...
Biggest Surprise: That it was so east to get rid of Micheal...Just think it could have been way better..
Best Bromance: Stefan and Klaus got this in the bag by far, these two were a great couple once Stefan accepted that he's gonna be with Klaus for awhile.
Most Misused Character:Bon Bon diffidently, She's just cleans up everyone's messes and now she's heartbroken... "Why do they do ma Bon Bon so?"
Hopes for 2012:okay NOT a Delena shipper but I'm so tired of the teasing, the little looks, the touching, the saying things to each other with underlining meanings...JUST get together already...Bon Bon to grow and stop being the maid when it came to every1'z mess and problems. MORE of Stefan and him in control...YEAH. oh and can we get Elijah back!

Best Character: Klaus, he is amazing enough said
Worst Character: Jeremy, the ghost storyline was horrible and I just didn't see Jeremy as useful at all. Best Episode: The end of the affair as we got to see ripper Stefan, meet Rebekah and I am a sucker for the 1920's but I also loved ordinary people as I have been waiting Forever for an Originals flashback episode and it was worth the wait.
Worst Episode: Ghost Town, by far the worst episode of The Vampire Diaries, the only good part was that it finally brought about the end of the ghost storyline. Most Interesting development: The originals, just seeing how complex their family dynamic was, learning how Klaus killed his mother, Rebekah got with stefan, all of it.
Biggest Surprise: Klaus killing his mother, I knew he was evil but didn't think he was THAT evil. Best Bromance: Alaric and Damon, enough said.
Most Misused Character: Katherine, I love her but she just seemed to appear when it was convenient for the writers. Hopes for 2012: Enough teasing Delena is ready to happen. I also want to see all of the Originals but mainly ELIJAH!!!!
