This has to be the best show premiere of 2011/2012. ABSOLUTELY stellar.
However on if the show remains this way depends on how well the mystery is explained and revealed.
Flashforward also started great, if I remember, but got real bad. Let's hope Alcatraz remains at this level of quality.

Sarah Jones is perfect in that role, it was such a discovery for me this great actress. Hot and brave, determined and smart, kinda the ideal of a heroin. And it seems to have great chemistry with Doc! Looking forward to how this series developes cos it has great potential.

Sigh.. if they are going to make a series with a female lead character the least they could do is pick someone who's good looking and knows how to act.
Bad acting and a lot of cheesy dialog, the only thing that redeems this series for me so far is Jorge Garcia's character.

My husband and I were disappointed with the first two hours. Hopefully, the acting gets better as the show progresses, because it all seemed wooden and contrived. I liked the prisoners more than the alleged "good guys." My husband and I both think the policewoman is bad casting in action. It was also a tad much to see Winchester 70 sniperman caught so easily.

I haven't watched the second hour yet so I haven't read the comments here in case of spoilers. The show has caught my interest more than enough to say I'll be watching the next few eps. I noticed at the end of the first hour that the combination entered on the number pad at the holding facility was 6323. It could be meaningless but the year the inmates disappeared was 19(63) and the prisoner number of the inmate they apprehended was 20(23). Just wondering if there may be a connection there somewhere. The series is from J.J. Abrams after all.

I didn't like it at all. I thought it slow, way too violent (I mean think Tucson), and poorly written. I do like the Lost guy and thought him good. I usually like Sam Neill but thought he was wooden and had no chemistry with the script or the cast. I will give it another chance in hopes that it will get better. I seem to be in the minority, so need to watch it again to make sure the first impressions were correct. I turned to my husband during the first hour and said, "This is awful". He agreed...and he's much more astute than I am.

Going to be an interesting, very watchable series; if they keep it around long enough.
Want to see more.

I enjoyed it. Enough mystery, twists & surpises to keep me watching for answers. I thought the cast was very good.

The show was OK, not great. It has good characters and actors, and decent writing for the most part with some egregious lapses (The "psychology" and motivations for Cobb being a sniper were ridiculous, and some of the dialog - the cop's speech to her partner in the hospital - made me cringe).
The bigger problems are the "mystery" and the procedural elements. The mystery just isn't that mysterious, or compelling, and the procedural component is terrible. The cop looks at a few items then makes leaps in deduction that would make Sherlock Holmes seem like a dolt.
The show may find it's fans, and if people like it good for them. I was looking forward to the show, but found the first two episodes too boring and cliched.
BTW, body count after just 2 episodes is what? 15? 20?

Lost + Prison Break! What a great idea! I' ll pitch Chuck + The Mentalist to the producers right after the shows are over.
JJ Abrams had terrible memories of an island when he was a child I think. Keeps repeating it :)

the show was excellent i really enjoyed it...i am just wondering why they are not using real inmate names from alcatraz instead making up inmate names who were never truly inmates is it some sort of legal issue

Like the show.....who played ernast cobb. Thank you
Excellent review. As far as J.J. Abrams series go, Alcatraz seems more aligned in structure to Fringe than to Lost, considering its hybrid procedural-with-a-heavy-mythology nature. Perhaps Abrams is trying to perfect what he did with Fringe so that he ends up with a show that carries a large audience further than Fringe could. I can't wait to see where it goes from here!
