Grey's Anatomy Review: Widow Casserole, Anyone?

at . Comments

Now this is what I call an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It was classic in all of the best ways: sad, funny, witty, tragic, with relationship drama at it’s best. "Hope for the Hopeless” was an hour packed with drama. So now that I have stopped with the shocked face and tears, it’s time to discuss this latest installment.

It was bound to be a monumental day. Richard was prepping for his 10,000th surgery, Meredith and Derek were getting ready for Zola’s party. It was going to be a good few hours for our favorite doctors... until it wasn’t.

Three’s Company. I almost forgot how crowded the Grey/Shepherd house; it’s a good thing the Dream House is in the works. After living with a married couple with a baby, two exes and random girls, it was time for April, Alex, and Jackson to move out. Do I sense a new Three’s Company? Things are bound to get awkward considering the tension and interest between April and the boys. She is about to become one lucky girl with those roommates.

Serious Stare

Pass The Tissues. “Hope for the Hopeless” was an emotional one for several reasons. Adele... Cristina and Owen... Patients...

“I’ll be with Daddy in heaven.” Seriously, tug on my heart strings. The young boy with the tumor was so emotional. I can’t imagine being involved in this scenario. Kudos to the writers for another dramatic case that us viewers can not get enough of. Seriously.

My Funny Valentine. So it is official: Alzheimer’s is super sad and it is heartbreaking watching Adele suffer. Not only has Richard experienced this with Ellis, but now with his wife. Webber singing to his love was one of the sweetest things ever and I could not help but tear up. Confusing Meredith for Ellis? Icing on the cake.

Loretta Devine is a welcome guest on this show any week in  my book. Every time she shows up she is a force to be reckoned with. Don’t you agree?

Poor Adele

Yay Zola! The cutest McFamily ever was preparing for Zola’s big party and through this, you can’t help but realize how much Meredith has grown up. The homemade cake? Adorable. Even better? Giving it to Richard for his 10,000th surgery. How awesome was Mer taking the widow casseroles as food for the party?!?

Zola Shepherd

The Argument Heard ‘Round The World. The tension has been mounting. It’s been a consistent storyline that has been building. Cristina and Owen came to blows over what started as her and Teddy stealing a surgery and then turned nto the abortion. I’m not too sure that these two can bounce back from this. I have to admit, although I haven’t always been the biggest fan of this pairing, this has been an arc I have come to appreciate. How about you?

Richard, Meredith

After Thoughts:

  • Richard is the best faux father to Meredith. Watching these two is one of the most enjoyable parts of this show.
  • Mark doesn’t want to rush into his relationship with Julia. Good idea. The whole “I love you” from Julia felt soon, even for me.
  • I expected a little more from guest star Nia Vardalos. This case didn’t really do it for me.
  • Even though Mer would be great as a General Surgeon, she needs to get back to neuro. It’s where her heart is and that’s where she can work on Alzheimers.
  • Jackson gets the award for most underused character again. Even though this is a big cast, those eyes deserve more screen time than what he has been getting.
  • Teddy is still pissed at Owen, rightfully so. Loved the widow casserole.
Celebrating Richard
“Hope for the Hopeless” is most definitely an hour of Grey’s Anatomy that deserves a second viewing. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Was this episode up to the Grey’s standard?
The series has been bringing its A game this season, and I, for one, cannot wait to see more of it. So hit the comments and let us know what you thought of the latest installment. Don’t forget to check back for the official GA Round Table later this week.

Does anyone know who sang "my funny valentine" at the end of the episode?

I'd rather see a April/Avery hook up than a Alex/April. I am hoping to see more funny scenes with them actually... Living together.. can not wait.

love the show. the way it is..... yes interesting for mer to just go off a bit to see what may have occured...., but truly is much better the way things turned out.... the way they are now.. of course if her mom had survived could hve been nice..but... cant hav her w.o way..
they just fit well and are the perfect couple for the show.. they just fit so wll... he isnt good being mean... and nasty.... and with someone else.. nor mer.with someone else doesnt work... at all..those 2 belong together... for sure...

At least with the fight, we get to see more screen time with Owen and Christina. Sandra Oh and Kevin Mckidd are great actors and work together excellently - I love seeing them onscreen. But if Owen and/or Christina start relationships with other people, the magic is gone and I will never watch this show again. They need to be committed to each other even if they're angry and hate each others guts.

Well that's the end of Christina and Owen. Didn't really know how he stood by with the baby's death and all. I loved this pairing, and I'm sad to see them go. I wish they wouldn't, but they had a good run for two whole seasons, so at least they lasted long enough. It's a tv series, so they can't be happy too long. I want them longer, but you have to admit, they had a long run. Still, the baby thing was unforgivable.

There's no coming back from that line for Christina. She's angry and there's nothing she can say or do to bring that baby back for Owen. The character development for Owen has been fantastic - remember how he was in the early days stabbing the pigs? Christina will sacrifice everything around her to be a surgeon. If she was a man, no one would even question it. But she's a woman, and ultimately that means not having children because her focus would, quite frankly, be elsewhere. A stay-at-home dad might just about do it for the kids, but Christina needs more from a partner - and ultimately, she'll sacrifice him too. Excellent episode, even though I'm bored with the Zola storyline (why can't anyone just have an ordinary pregnancy on TV?) she's a cute kiddie and it's giving Mer a chance to play mumsie. Owen watching Christina with Zola, and watching his heart break was awesome.

@Amanda: I couldn't have said it better myself! Really hope we'll get to see them in a relationship. As you said Alex is a good guy deep down and he deserves someone who will love him wholeheartedly and I have no doubt April can be that someone.

But actually is Izzie did come back when April and Alex were finally together, it would be great to watch how it would pan out but I'd love Alex step up and tell Izzie he no longer loved her and April was the one! Izzie/Alex this ship has sailed! April should be the mother of Alex's kids, I think she will give Alex all he's ever needed his entire life......if only he'd stop hooking up with randomers and take notice of April!

I personally think that Alex and April will eventually get together. Just think the writers are leaving this one on a slow burner. They have a little history of failing to hook up. She finds him repulsive and he can't stand her atm. But Alex has come on so far since Izzie, really grown as a person, he's been working hard and has become such a great person/friend/doctor. Although he still has a few kinks to work out I think this is leading up to him being a better person and that April will notice this. I think that when he moves into an apartment with Jackson and April he will start to notice her as not just someone to hook up with but someone to be with.
I think Alex and April will be good together, think she will be great for him as I believe when she gives her heart it won't be lightly and this means she won't leave/hurt Alex. So go away Izzie!

Love your scenario. Alex/April/Izzie I would love to see that happen! I know that Alex has been nothing but a jerk to her and yet I don't know I ship them like crazy... I'm pretty sure that if given the chance those two could be perfect for each other. Please Shonda Rhimes make my wish come true...

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Episode 12 Quotes

Julia: Love you.
Mark: See ya.

There's nothing else we can do for you. These are the last words a surgeon wants to tell a patient. Getting up doesn't come easy to us, so we do everything in our power not to. For surgeons, lost cause just means try a little harder.
