Grey's Anatomy Review: Widow Casserole, Anyone?

at . Comments

Now this is what I call an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It was classic in all of the best ways: sad, funny, witty, tragic, with relationship drama at it’s best. "Hope for the Hopeless” was an hour packed with drama. So now that I have stopped with the shocked face and tears, it’s time to discuss this latest installment.

It was bound to be a monumental day. Richard was prepping for his 10,000th surgery, Meredith and Derek were getting ready for Zola’s party. It was going to be a good few hours for our favorite doctors... until it wasn’t.

Three’s Company. I almost forgot how crowded the Grey/Shepherd house; it’s a good thing the Dream House is in the works. After living with a married couple with a baby, two exes and random girls, it was time for April, Alex, and Jackson to move out. Do I sense a new Three’s Company? Things are bound to get awkward considering the tension and interest between April and the boys. She is about to become one lucky girl with those roommates.

Serious Stare

Pass The Tissues. “Hope for the Hopeless” was an emotional one for several reasons. Adele... Cristina and Owen... Patients...

“I’ll be with Daddy in heaven.” Seriously, tug on my heart strings. The young boy with the tumor was so emotional. I can’t imagine being involved in this scenario. Kudos to the writers for another dramatic case that us viewers can not get enough of. Seriously.

My Funny Valentine. So it is official: Alzheimer’s is super sad and it is heartbreaking watching Adele suffer. Not only has Richard experienced this with Ellis, but now with his wife. Webber singing to his love was one of the sweetest things ever and I could not help but tear up. Confusing Meredith for Ellis? Icing on the cake.

Loretta Devine is a welcome guest on this show any week in  my book. Every time she shows up she is a force to be reckoned with. Don’t you agree?

Poor Adele

Yay Zola! The cutest McFamily ever was preparing for Zola’s big party and through this, you can’t help but realize how much Meredith has grown up. The homemade cake? Adorable. Even better? Giving it to Richard for his 10,000th surgery. How awesome was Mer taking the widow casseroles as food for the party?!?

Zola Shepherd

The Argument Heard ‘Round The World. The tension has been mounting. It’s been a consistent storyline that has been building. Cristina and Owen came to blows over what started as her and Teddy stealing a surgery and then turned nto the abortion. I’m not too sure that these two can bounce back from this. I have to admit, although I haven’t always been the biggest fan of this pairing, this has been an arc I have come to appreciate. How about you?

Richard, Meredith

After Thoughts:

  • Richard is the best faux father to Meredith. Watching these two is one of the most enjoyable parts of this show.
  • Mark doesn’t want to rush into his relationship with Julia. Good idea. The whole “I love you” from Julia felt soon, even for me.
  • I expected a little more from guest star Nia Vardalos. This case didn’t really do it for me.
  • Even though Mer would be great as a General Surgeon, she needs to get back to neuro. It’s where her heart is and that’s where she can work on Alzheimers.
  • Jackson gets the award for most underused character again. Even though this is a big cast, those eyes deserve more screen time than what he has been getting.
  • Teddy is still pissed at Owen, rightfully so. Loved the widow casserole.
Celebrating Richard
“Hope for the Hopeless” is most definitely an hour of Grey’s Anatomy that deserves a second viewing. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Was this episode up to the Grey’s standard?
The series has been bringing its A game this season, and I, for one, cannot wait to see more of it. So hit the comments and let us know what you thought of the latest installment. Don’t forget to check back for the official GA Round Table later this week.

Cristina and Owen never bickered this entire season until now. This was the first time the abortion was brought up since she had the procedure and since then, they have not talked about it at all. This story arc is just beginning and I am really looking forward how this will unfold!

There were great moments in this episode - mentioned above. However, a few things are getting old. The bickering between Cristina and Owen has gone on too long; either write in some counseling or end it. I can understand Owen's point of view. I was angry at his lack of self control in shouting the abortion letting everyone in on somethings so personal. Let this arc die. I'm not sure I think Owen is capable or has the personality to be chief.

@Tamara : Owen is Cristina's husband, NOT boyfriend.

I think it was only a matter of time before Owen brought up the abortion again, especially after seeing Cristina with Zola. I would love to see that being brought up in a later episode. You see two people who know what they want, however, what they want is the opposite of the other. It's really hard to say if they can come back from this one. As much as Alex needs a girl to ground him, he needs to work on his problems in order to let someone in. He's too nice on the inside, but outside he's still too negative. He doubts himself too much. I can't wait to see what happens when he lives with April and Jackson. And I can see chemistry with April and Jackson, but due to them being best friends, I don't think I want to see them become a couple and ruin it all.

O/C - I love these two - their relationship had me hooked from the start and I love how complex it is. I really felt for Owen. Christina and Teddy acted like brats all episode. We knew this was coming and the build up has been excellent. Christina was absolutely right to have that abortion. She was very clear on her thoughts concerning children - Owen went into the marriage knowing that, and he came to see that and stood by her side, holding her hand during the procedure. However that doesn't mean he's not going to have feelings about it. They never talked - and its heartbreaking watching Owen see how good Christina is with Zola, knowing he'll never have a child with the woman he loves. What do we thinks going on with Avery and April? Anything there? He seemed a bit put out it wouldn't just be him and April moving in together...

I have to say I agree with Owen. Seeing Yang with any child is hard since she decided to terminate her pregnancy. Its as if Yang nor Altman respect him as the Chief. They wouldnt pull those stunts with Richard. Hell not with Bailey either! Yes Owen was wrong not to tell Altman Henry had died. But that mistake is forgiveable!
They all need to sit down and have a long talk.

SO TRUE: Yes I do think it was very sad that Henry dies and I get that Teddy is upset BUT she should have talked to Owen outside of work at how upset she is and mad at him for lying to her about Henry, however Owen is the chief and he did the right thing as Chief by not telling Christina who she was operating on so that she could do her 100% best AND he did not tell Teddy because he was doing what was best for the patient she was operating on First I think that Teddy and Christina were being super immature and very disrespectful to their boss, someone needs to remind them that Owen is their boss!!
AND christina is saying that she killed henry so teddy gets everything what she wants forever - bullshit ... she doesnt even help her boyfriend when he asked her what he can do for teddy.. what a bad girlfriend she is, does she wanna be with owen or teddy??

Loretta Divine was simply amazing!! Her acting is something I've always admired. "My Funny Valentine" will always remind me of Richard and Adele. Sad and beautiful scene all at once.
Love Callie and Arizona teasing Mark. Callie pretending to be Mark talking to Julia was hilarious! They are so cute and I'm loving their happy scenes!

I have to say im in team owen aswell. I really understand christina... about the abortion but on the otherside they never really talked about it... and then he sees her with zola.. thats hard
what annoys me is that she wants no kids etc. he wants something else. thats the 2nd relationship for christina which wont work - i get bored it just looks like no one can be with her.
Also i hate teddy and her now, this stupid laughing. Like kids. And i mean yeah she loves to operate, but that teddy - who just lost her husband - is putting this wife of the guy with the thing in his heart, threw all this just to get the op??? seriously.. thats soo horrible, and after seeing christina trying to get every op - god just take it easy...
and i know i should feel sorry for teddy but im just annoyed of her..

P.S. : that evil-sacarstic laugh from Kepner was AWESOME.
And yes, Cris should be grateful, Owen could have fired them both !
-What Mer did for Richard at the party was REALLY nice !! I liked it !

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Episode 12 Quotes

Julia: Love you.
Mark: See ya.

There's nothing else we can do for you. These are the last words a surgeon wants to tell a patient. Getting up doesn't come easy to us, so we do everything in our power not to. For surgeons, lost cause just means try a little harder.
