Grey's Anatomy Spoiler: Major Death to Come

at . Comments

Having offered up many Grey's Anatomy season finale spoilers already, Shonda Rhimes has now confirmed the biggest yet: Someone will die in the upcoming eighth season finale. A "beloved character" no less.

But who?

"A lot of our writers were crying, which is a very rare thing," she tells TV Guide of the May 17 event. "There's some really shocking, horrible moments." How bad are we talking about? Worse than the mass shooting?

"Yeah, it is," Rhimes promises. "People's mettle is going to be tested."

Writing the eighth season finale, titled "Flight," was sheer "torture... I've been sitting with my head in my hands for days. I understand the choice I made, but it scares me how the fans are going to react."

A Mer, Der Pic

Rhimes recently quoted Kurt Vonnegut, Tweeting, "Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them - in order that the reader may see what they are made of."

That quote, Shonda says, gave her "the courage to do what we're doing in the finale."

The drama begins in the May 10 episode, "Migration," with "a case that takes a group of our people out of the hospital" for "the medical case of their lives," says Rhimes, hinting that the patient could be one of their own.

And there's this: May 10 will also feature Derek and Meredith's dream house. Rhimes originally planned for the season to end with the couple watching it burn to the ground, but "I was not ready to do that."

Instead, the dream house is being constructed and is "quite beautiful. I feel like this is the moment for it, since Meredith and Derek are having a debate about their future. I just hope we can use it next season."

Rhimes' hopes the cast's contract status will remain secret heading into the finale, where "The lives of our people should be a concern ... A lot of choices are made in this episode that change people's futures forever."

Still, after killing off George in 2009, she says "there are certain characters on this show that you can't kill. It wouldn't be acceptable not only to the audience, but to me and my vision of what this show is. They can't die."

Someone will die, however. Who do you think it is? Sound off with your predictions for the season finale, the future of the show after this season and all things Grey's Anatomy below!

Please don't let anything bad happen to Callie or Arizona..they had enough tragedy last season. I guessing the Chief might die..and he would affect a lot of other characters

Really hope it not Callie or Arizona, they had enough heartbreak and tragedy last season..they are my absolute favorites...

My bet is on Webber. On the flight back from San Fran the plane crashes (they are filming the finale in the woods/mountains, today I think is the last day of filming?) with him and the interns on board. I am guessing he does something to save Meredith and he dies doing it giving Meredith more dark and twisty since she has come to think of him as a father. If it isn't him it's Derek but I really think that if Shonda killed him off (even though I know he wants out of his contract) she'd lose a good majority of her fans. There are other ways off a show (a la Izzy and Burke) and I think that killing him off would be the final nail in the coffin of the show. I just don't see many viewers staying after that. With her guarded comments about not being able to kill off certain cast members (I think the show BARELY survived George's death and it's not really recovered the acclaim it had before it) means only Meredith and Derek are safe because they are the true heart of the show. If it's not Webber or Derek I'm going with Cristina.

The person to die should be webber. He could be on a diffrent plane that crashes, dying with all of the crew trying to save him they get him back to SGMW, just as Adele arives. Lucid. Webber flatlines.
April has failed leading to her going super crazy so on the elevator as Arizona gets on, to calm her down - kisses her up until the elevator gets to the bottom. Shock horror!
Arizona is on the lift as she has just found out callie is pregnant so is super angry. Hence the kissing. This is after callie had previously asked mark to help her but had previously declined as it was against Arizona. Thus would lead to the next series having to workout who got callie pregnant.
Owen right at the end of the episode 'jumps' off the top in a mad panic because of attendings leaving/dying, just as Christina finds him to tell that webber had just woken up...

I think it's Richard. I think there's no more storyline for him.

I kind of hope it's Alex. He has this whole "I'm a pit bull who was fed glass" thing going on, and he's not even stirring up drama anymore, he's just being annoying. In fact, his story line arch this season has been pitiful, in my personal opinion. I think they ruffle our feathers leading us to think that he is unable to take his boards, thus failing, however he DOES pass (on a later date, episode: Migration. As soon as we're proud of our little Karev, BAM. Dead.

It'll be Adele I say

I think it will be Webber. This will open up an attending general surgeon position at Seattle Grace which will be perfect for Meredith to take. Oh, and Bailey will be given Chief, since Owen clearly hates it.

Another ending possibility not envolving a plane crash ( which most passengers would die ) (there was a plane crash last season also). What about an airport shuttle crash on the return trip to SGMW from San Fran all we know is that the docs finished there boards and someone fails. The next two episodes could episode could take place there and on the 5/17 episode could have the crash occur it is a 2 hour show the accident and death screen could happen in the beginning and could continue thru with docs having critical injuries and the more I think about it you could have Meridgh on life support till next season and Derick left with the decision to pull the plug. It also explains the hospital staff not knowing at first. I think derick and Meridgh are together with Zola at the time of the event from photos at the airport where it shows. Ola holding a pink ballon . I still think it will be Webbed
