The Mentalist Season 5: Darkness Ahead

by at . Comments

Be warned, CBS viewers: if you think Patrick Jane hit rock bottom on this week's The Mentalist Season 4 finale, creator Bruno Heller has some disturbing news.

"We’re certainly going to see a little more of that hard darker side of him," Heller previews to Entertainment Weekly. "That’s one of Simon Baker’s great assets as an actor, he can play both charming and dark at the same time. The show is not going to turn into a much darker show, but that character will show more of those colors. We’re getting closer to the meat of what the show is about."

As for Red John? Heller says it's conceivable fans have already met him, and is also prepared to disappoint many followers once the reveal is actually made.

"The trick is going to be - and this is coming - bringing the audience along and making them second guess themselves and ask, 'Is that him? Is that him?' Red John ultimately is just a man - whenever you see the great criminals reduced to the flesh it’s sort of disappointing. I have two seasons or so to make it come true. I can guarantee that people will be disappointed."

If Red John IS someone we've met, I would guess Kristina Frye - her last conversation in the interrogation room with Patrick, where the "spirit" of Kristina Frye said she was dead, could mean that the Red John side of her had finally taken her over completely and "killed" Kristina...alternately, lacking any "split personality" option, getting herself put away in an out-of-the-way asylum where any number of her "disciples" could contact her, do her bidding or even get her out from time to time would be very easy to do.

After all, in a number of shows where Patrick meets killers or others whose situation parallels his own loss, he always asks them "was it worth it" or gets a perspective from them on the lack of satisfaction in their revenge, and is always shown to be carefully considering their answer. I think this kind of evolution of attitude, in a sense growing "beyond" Red John, is what will enrage Red John enough to make the fatal error that will nail him - not because of a devious "long con" by Patrick, but almost unintentionally because of who Patrick Jane has become through his experiences at the CBI. I've never got the impression that the show is structured like an Agatha Christie or Ellery Queen whodunit, but so many people seem to treat the "Who Is Red John" question as the key puzzle to the show, and are sure he is someone we've already seen. I think some of the clues in the end will turn out to be valid, but many will turn out to be red herrings, and when the writers decide who Red John is, they just have to pick and choose from the crumbs they've already laid down and just make sure they don't contradict too much of what has already been presented. I think the revelation will turn out to be of little importance, and will not be anyone we've met up to now (perhaps with one exception). I think if the show has an overall arc, it is Patrick's personal character evolution, growing beyond his obsessive need for revenge and reclaiming his life. I saw the end of Season 3 and had heard just enough about The Mentalist that the finale captivated me and I watched Season 4 from the beginning. I mention that because I may be confused a bit by watching older episodes out of order, etc. but I am leaning towards Christina Frey or the blind woman Rosalind. They both have things about them that could convince me they could be the one. I also think the idea of many Red Johns is very plausible and that cult type organization could very well be where they are manufactured. Don't want to see any more of PJ's dark side but we are being promised that for this new season. I love the show because of PJ and his delightfully devious yet fun-loving side and he has already gotten to where he is turning into a killer. Please don't let that happen writers. The show IS about murder yes but the name of the show is The Mentalist so the featured character is PJ. And, quite the character he is too. That being said, no one (I don't think) wants to see the main character of a tv series turn hard and cold and dark. Just my humble thoughts. Please give the show the PJ we have fallen in love with and not someone who is turning into a total stranger. Could be I'm getting ahead of myself -- I am fairly new to this show and there are so many ins and outs to it so hopefully I should just sit back and relax and hope I continue to enjoy it as I did last year. Oh yeah, it does look like he might possibly be showing a little more attention to Lisbon like the hand holding scene at the end of the finale, etc. That would be nice :)

Patrick is not red John ok so leave that alone. But I do think it would be awesome if Lisbon and patrick was together she finally cut the chain on his heart

I think it would be cool if it were Lisbon. She and Jane get together, she breaks through to his hard heart, they hook up and the final episode is a hug twist. What better way for Red John to "win" than to make him believe he has found someone to love again. :-)

This show is awesome! Here is my own theory.Patrick Jane is Red John ,Like they said 'Red John is many '.He probably killed people who found out he was a cheat and when his wife found out about him being a fake and a murderer he decided to silence her or his disciples did.Patrick has disciples and since he can hypnotize he hypnotizes his followers not to say anything when they are caught. He realised the CBI was getting closer to him so he had to create the idea of killing a' Red John' so the cops would get off his track. All was well till darcy so he had to leave so he could organise his followers. As there was an fbi informant informing him he knew darcy was close

If i was a writer, Red John would be Patrick himself.

RJ --PJ
How about a slight twist in the split personality idea. The good twin evil twin plot. There is very little info about PJ family.
PJ could not even know he had a twin.Evil twin RJ could have been jealous of PJ and his family
As twins they would appear the same and evil twin RJ could fool people into thinking that he was PJ and hypnotize them on an as needed basis and not need or have a big organization or cult. For example McLaughlin(sp?)could have come to the CBI clean and evil twin RJ could have approached him as PJ and put him under his control
Oh and evil twin was raised in Australia ;-)
Pretty hokey I know but play with it a while. Read more tv spoilers at: http://www.tvfanatic.com/2012/...
