Hawaii Five-0 Review: Off And Running

"La O Na Makuahine:Mother’s Day

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 kicked off with the Chin-Ho, Kono and Malia-based cliffhanger we have been biting our nails over all summer. While my guess from the season finale of how Kono could be saved was really close (Adam saved her after Chin-Ho called him), my hope that Malia opening her eyes meant that she would survive didn't fair as well.

Can we hope that Chin-Ho won’t go down a horribly dark path over Malia’s death because he was able to catch Frank Delano and shoot him in the face with a shotgun? I’m worried that we are going to have to deal with “Evil Chin-Ho” now for several episodes, which would drag down the overall feel of the show.

The premiere also gave us a complete answer to the questions that were asked most often during the show's sophomore season. To wit: What is Shelburne? It was Doris McGarrett’s code name when she was a spy before Steve was born.

It was even better to receive the answer directly from Doris McGarrett herself as she explained why she disappeared for 20 years to Steve. I’m not surprised that Steve had some anger about his mom faking her own death. I was very glad that he got past it, though, towards the end of the episode when he called her “mom” instead of “Doris.”

In addition to Christine Lahti coming on board as Mrs. McGarrett, Michelle Borth returned as Catherine Rawlins. She's now a series regular. While they didn’t explain why she is suddenly island-bound in the Navy, I enjoyed watching her and Doris together too much to really complain about it.

Speaking of Doris and Catherine, I’m very curious why Doris didn’t shoot Wo Fat and, more importantly, why Wo Fat spent years trying to find her and didn’t even raise his pistol. I’m sensing that any relief I have over finding out who Shelburne was is going to quickly be replaced with questions about Wo Fat and Doris’ interaction and relationship.

My only complaint about the opener was the way the writers decided to have Wo Fat escape. I just don’t get why it had to involve a helicopter picking up an armored car with a giant skill-crane style claw. Had they cut to a shot of the three-eyed alien from Toy Story pointing and saying Oooooh, The Claw!! it would not have surprised me... and might have made it better.

I will say (claw-copter aside) that the rest of the action from Peter Lenkov’s story was great. I cheered out loud when Kono jumped straight up as the guy tried to run her down and then shot him through the windshield while standing on the hood.

In conclusion, this week’s premiere was excellent and the addition of Lahti as Doris made for some fun Hawaii Five-O Quotes. I’m excited to see where Lenov decides to take her and Catherine in relation to the core team. What did you think of the premiere? Do you like the addition of Doris McGarrett?

Oops, part of my post got eaten! ...worst scene was when they went to the morgue to see Chin. They have her enter the room on Steve's shoulder like she owns the place. Danny literally has to step around her to get to the door to go in and talk to Chin. She'd never been there before, doesn't know anybody, is a total outsider to what is going on. She'd naturally be hanging back staying out of the way. Really poor staging of that scene.

There is a believable way to resolve the Doris McG storyline. I just doubt they have the guts or scriptwriting ability to do it. She needs to be bad. Really bad. She was never worried about anybody but herself. And when the hubby finally got too close, she helped set up his getting whacked by Wo Fat. And, eventually, she needs to make the same decision about Steve, forcing him to take her down for good. That'd be a powerful story: To avenge his dad Steve doesn't just have to get Wo Fat; he needs to take down his Mom, as well. If they want to make Wo Fat Steve's brother or biological dad, that could fit in, as well. But the way they handled her in the premiere was beyond awkward. It's not just her having not seen Steve in 20 years; she'd never met him as an adult. Yet, they tried to set it up like she was an instant insider. Wanting to be called mom immediately, the banter with Danny in the car 2 minutes after meeting him, getting chummy with the girlfriend. And the worst scene was when they went to the morgue to see Chin. She enters the room on Steve's shoulder like she owns the place. Danny literally has to step around her to get to the door so they can go see Chin. She's never been there before, doesn't know anybody there. Really bad staging of the scene.

with Doris McG in hiding for 20 years to protect herself while her familly was in danger and people were dying all over the place at the hands of WoFat while he searched for her I have a question. Since her death was faked, what was Hiro and Yoshi Noshimoris role in her faked death?

@Joe I agree with everything you have said the best thing Peter and Co can do is to wrap up this Shellbourne/Wo-Fat storyline ASAP before they loose more fans @Mrs. Cleaver I did the same I also checked out "Revolution" some H5O have said that some stunts where over the top in the season premiere all I can say DON"T watch "Revolution" suchs a unbelievable show.

Maybe Wo Fat and McGarrett are half brothers!! Just kidding, (I hope).

Mrs cleaver

With the low ratings, I checked out "Revolution" the new show that H5O is up against. What a dog that show is (totally unbelievable), shouldn't be long before H50 picks back up. Especially if as Joe (below) says, they lose the Doris/Shelburne storyline for a good long while.Happy to see previews with Ed Asner for next time.
Bring back crime of the week!!

I was worried that they'd written themselves into a corner with the Shelburne storyline. Sadly, that's exactly what has happened. It's impossible to view Steve's mom with any sympathy based on the story they set up. There was no way to EVER clue Steve's dad in on that she really wasn't dead? His best buddy Joe and her let him vainly chase her imaginary killer for 20 years? (Only to have him STILL get murdered by Wo Fat!?) And then even after Wo Fat had nearly killed Steve on numerous occasions it still takes months for her and Joe to finally reveal the big secret? (If staying hidden was really just to protect her family, doesn't that excuse disappear when the family starts getting killed?) With friends and family like these, you don't need enemies.

Also, anyone else notice the Danno is usually the least involved in any sort of action scene?

Besides Wo Fat wanting to find who killed his father, what else is there? And why do we care? Maybe he is really Steve's father? That could be fun. And how did he find Kono in the ocean? they left that one hanging. It's Hawaii and no bikinis. Wassup with that?

Katherine has to go.
