Hawaii Five-0 Review: Off And Running

"La O Na Makuahine:Mother’s Day

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 kicked off with the Chin-Ho, Kono and Malia-based cliffhanger we have been biting our nails over all summer. While my guess from the season finale of how Kono could be saved was really close (Adam saved her after Chin-Ho called him), my hope that Malia opening her eyes meant that she would survive didn't fair as well.

Can we hope that Chin-Ho won’t go down a horribly dark path over Malia’s death because he was able to catch Frank Delano and shoot him in the face with a shotgun? I’m worried that we are going to have to deal with “Evil Chin-Ho” now for several episodes, which would drag down the overall feel of the show.

The premiere also gave us a complete answer to the questions that were asked most often during the show's sophomore season. To wit: What is Shelburne? It was Doris McGarrett’s code name when she was a spy before Steve was born.

It was even better to receive the answer directly from Doris McGarrett herself as she explained why she disappeared for 20 years to Steve. I’m not surprised that Steve had some anger about his mom faking her own death. I was very glad that he got past it, though, towards the end of the episode when he called her “mom” instead of “Doris.”

In addition to Christine Lahti coming on board as Mrs. McGarrett, Michelle Borth returned as Catherine Rawlins. She's now a series regular. While they didn’t explain why she is suddenly island-bound in the Navy, I enjoyed watching her and Doris together too much to really complain about it.

Speaking of Doris and Catherine, I’m very curious why Doris didn’t shoot Wo Fat and, more importantly, why Wo Fat spent years trying to find her and didn’t even raise his pistol. I’m sensing that any relief I have over finding out who Shelburne was is going to quickly be replaced with questions about Wo Fat and Doris’ interaction and relationship.

My only complaint about the opener was the way the writers decided to have Wo Fat escape. I just don’t get why it had to involve a helicopter picking up an armored car with a giant skill-crane style claw. Had they cut to a shot of the three-eyed alien from Toy Story pointing and saying Oooooh, The Claw!! it would not have surprised me... and might have made it better.

I will say (claw-copter aside) that the rest of the action from Peter Lenkov’s story was great. I cheered out loud when Kono jumped straight up as the guy tried to run her down and then shot him through the windshield while standing on the hood.

In conclusion, this week’s premiere was excellent and the addition of Lahti as Doris made for some fun Hawaii Five-O Quotes. I’m excited to see where Lenov decides to take her and Catherine in relation to the core team. What did you think of the premiere? Do you like the addition of Doris McGarrett?

I'm a huge H50 fan, so it pains me to say 301 was a disappointment. Daniel Dae Kim was fantastic, with his quiet strengh and sorrow, Adam/Kono with seriously hot chemistry, Kamekona wanting little Stevie pics and the few McDanno moments were enjoyable. I'm holding off on Doris until we see more. Fine line between drama and soap opera sometimes. I thought she came off rather harsh interrogating Danny and her talk with Steve. Intriguing character who looks like she may be more dark side after letting Wo Fat go. As long as they are not related, I want to learn more. The escape and the public shootout were too far over the top and cartoonish. The whole crime story was rushed and nonsensical. Also cartoonish was Cath. Sorry I don't buy the analyst desk jockey head butting and beating up one of Wo Fat's goons, while she lets Wo Fat go up to get Shelbourne. That and she is free to come and babysit? I hope the writers do not make her into a Mary Sue Lori 2.0 but it sure started that way. I had no problem with her as a recurring character, but a little bit goes a long way. See no reason for her to be a regular. This show needs to go back to what made it a success in season 1 - team, bromance, action and humor. We need team interaction and bonding, so much we don't know about them let alone introducing new characters that get more time than the regulars.

After season one this show started to go off the rails and I don't think anyone has found the track again. Are these people Hawaii 5 O or James Bond forces? The helicopter rescue of the bad guy was beyond belief (also where my husband and I said James Bond movie at the same time). The scene where Steve and his mother reunited
was awful, unbelievable, and, did I mention awful?
Someone PLEASE tell CBS to watch Season One and go back to the promise this show had!

Hawaii Lame-O. Look it's somebodies Mom! Leo pa'a, mumule

Getting a little ridiculous. SOOOOO tired of the Wo Fat story line. Can't the writers come up with something else. Really close to not watching any more as that story line is boring!!

I guess I'm the only one that did not like Steve's mom? So happy Kono lived but sad for Chin. :(

Well if you think Wu Fat will go away keep waiting ,if the character is based after the original show from the 70's he will be there to the very end.Think Mama M Garrett might be a little dirty with a couple skeletons in her closet ,not sure about the whole maybe Wu Fat is her son, something more to it ,that would be to predictable. Thought, it sucked for Chin but he got his revenge.Over all thought it was a good show ,can't wait to see what's in store

CONTINUED>>>>> I thought DDK was excellent, he finally has a meaty part. I loved it when he shot Delano, although I'm sure there will be some payment for that. It was heart breaking to see him come home to find the chickens in the oven. Sorry Malia is gone, but it does give him a great story line. Not enough of Kono, although I loved it when she jumped on the car, and shot Toothpick through the windshield. I'm glad Adam was there to save her. Still like this relationship, although I'm sure there will be some complications. It's definitely more interesting then Kono/Fong.

I thought it was a great episode. I'll worry about the ratings once we have a few episodes in. I think it will pick up. I thought the helicopter bit was over the top, although I did laugh at it. I also laughed when I saw it in a Bond movie. I didn't care for the Boo Boo comment. Catherine was great. I'm glad to see them show her as kick ass, for real, not just say it and not show it. I like Christine Lahti's portrayal of Doris. I think she played it just right. I'm not happy with Doris, I think she could have handled things better. Also, they had Steve say his father was looking for Doris' killer for 20 years which we knew before, but what I don't understand is why would she tell Joe White and not her husband. I like the what the character brings to the show, but right now not liking her much. I loved that Danny did not trust her. The cargument was good, but where does she come off telling Danny how to conduct relationships? I truly hope Wofat is not Steve's 1/2 brother, that would be over the top. They did not say that in the show, so I'm still hopeful, but Doris and Wofat not shooting each other means they have some sort of connection.

I'm glad Chin shot Delano. He got just what he deserved. I didn't like it they let Chin's wife die. Why can they not let anybody on TV be married ? They could let them have a happy home life and still have good crime stories. I want Danny's ex wife's baby to get sick and them find out the baby is really Danny's. I want them to get back together. He is such a great dad . They have made a big point of that so why write them out of the story ? Doesn't make any sense to me. I also believe Wo-Fat is Steve's half brother. I thought that the minute he walked into that room and they looked at each other. Also instead of sending Steve's mother out of the country why not send her to her daughters ?

Can't say I'm happy with the way the show is going. It had many great twists and turns during S1 & S2,but now it seems to be losing its way. For one thing, there is a price to be paid for simply arresting Wo Fat.
This is the Al Capone of the Islands. He could still run his little empire from his jail cell. Here's something to ponder..... WHAT OF MCGARRETT'S MOM IS BEING USED BY WO FAT TO MAINPULATE HIM?? Something to ponder this season, once we get past this bogus soap opera.
