Hawaii Five-0 Review: Halloween Do Over

by at . Comments

"Mohai:Offering

The delayed broadcasting of a Halloween-themed episode has the potential of being just like that coworker who shows up wearing a Santa hat in January: it's awkward.

Thankfully, this was not the case here, as Hawaii Five-0 learned something from last year’s less than stellar Halloween offering and aired an installment that took place around Halloween, but didn't use the holiday itself as a scary point. For that, they had the creepiest grandson and grandmother relationship. Ever

McGarrett's Halloween Investigation

Seriously, am I the only one who was more creeped out by the relationship of Seth and his grandmother than the killings of Seth?!? Helen went from sweet, sleepy, old woman to cop-shooting-psychopath in the space of time it takes to finish a cup of tea.

Which actually lead to my biggest disappointment: we did not learn anything about why Seth was performing the ritual murders or why his grandmother was willing to kill herself instead of turning him in. There was such potential for it in the scene where Seth came home and Helen was sipping tea over the body of Lucas. All we needed was a little dialog giving us “the big reveal” of why he was doing it all.

Sadly, nothing. Okay, Helen gave us "clean up your mess." But I’m not really counting that.

Then, on the other hand, Steve shooting Seth without shouting "stop" or "hold it right there" worked well as a climatic ending to the story. However, given how many knuckleheads Five-0 chases on foot, it seems unlikely he wouldn't have given any sort of warning before shooting his creepy ass.

As for the brief nod to the holiday in question, it's always a bonus when we get to see Grace, who I swear has doubled in size since last Halloween. Then we had Catherine and Steve watching Child’s Play while trying to make out on the couch. This scene alone earned big points because we so very rarely get to witness the team “at play. Seeing Steve act like he's in high school is always fun.

In conclusion, the episode earns four "spin the bottles" for a good nod to Halloween, but it fell a little short on insight into the motives of the villains.

What did you think? Did Grace make the cutest bee ever? Should Danny just give up on Halloween?

Except for Danny being as useless and annoying as usual this wasn't a bad episode. Probably the best of the season so far. Better writing this week and the show actually managed to surprise me. I've forgotten about Doris already. Terrible character and storyline. Wish they'd just forget about it. I like Cath but they need to give her something besides being the girlfriend.

Creepy show. Love the coroner! Gracie is so cute. Catherine and Grace together, good move by the writers.

Given that Seth was literally inthe process fo plunging a knife into his victim, there was no time to yell "stop" or "5-0" or anythign else. And it was incredibly obvious that the shooting would happen like that. Not one of the best episodes, IMHO. Over-the-top and at times almost felt tongue-in-cheek.

sorry, too long. Cont. C/K grew up on the island - they should have all kinds of family and friends that would be interesting to see them (and the team) interact with, but it seems like they have no life at all outside of standing at the computer table. I guess I just wish the show could do a better job of balancing out some storylines. Steve is drowning in unfinished storylines and the other three are void of them. I really like all of the four characters and I want to know more about them, not just Steve, as much as I like him, too.
I thought the case was pretty interesting this week - creepy and twisted and I did like it. Catwoman was really, really great.
I am glad other people enjoyed this one because this show should be fun and enjoyable above all else, but it just didn't work for me. I am hoping it is a one-off and they will get back on track with some better storylines for the Danny, Chin and Kono soon and something better for Steve than girlfriend/not-girlfriend - angst.

Did I blink and miss Chin and Kono in this one? Sigh. The best thing about this show (in my opinion) is the core team interaction and this one failed at that and I can't really see why. There were plenty of opportunities to include the other two in the action and they just didn't. All I can hope is that this isn't the beginning of a trend. I am not really that interested in watching the Steve/Cath/Danny (and now Monkey) show. I continue to be disinterested in Cath - I don't find her offensive as a character or annoying, just boring. I might be the only one, but I found her much more compelling as a Naval Officer and a lot less compelling laying on Steve's couch or offering up advice to a child. I don't mind new characters, but spread it around show - how about a Danny connected character or a little background on Chin or Kono (is Chin done mourning now? That was ...quick)? C/K grew up on the island - they should have all kinds of family and friends that would be interesting to see them (and the team) interact with, but it seems like they have no life at all outside of standing at the computer table. Mrs. Cleaver, how the killer got the victims to the crime scene, was he hit them head on with his truck. Remember that whole car accident scene at the opening. The 5-0's remarked that no one could have walked away from that upside down car. They were injured, so Goat Man was able to drag them off to his lair.

I liked the 'crime' storyline of the creepy grandma/grandson, and appreciated that they just let the core team handle the case. But in general I'm not liking the direction this season is going. I was really looking forward to Steve's mom coming back and how seeing how that relationship/dynamic would unfold - but she has only been in 1 episode (besides the premiere) and only briefly. I don't get that. Instead they are focusing Steve's 'personal time' on his relationship with Catherine, which has become totally cheesey and pointless. I think they should give Danno the girlfriend and finally give him something to be happy about!!

Former Miss America and 70's TV regular Lee Merriweather did a great job as the creepiest grandma ever last nite. Who saw HER skewering the terrified captive, just after she sends her psycho grandson out to get her some mint chocolate chip ice cream? I didn't. And let's say that you usually can see a plot twist coming on H50 from a mile away.
Good episode, reminded me of the "honeymoon killer" epi from the first season. I LOVE how the writers are using Catherine, she SO humanizes Steve. Around her he generally goes from uptight Super Seal to geeky high school kid in no time. Not much action for Kono and Chin (who was rocking a hot short haircut) but Danno's Monkey has returned. Only to promptly ditch him for her friends, leaving Danno to come play third wheel w/Steve & Cath.
As usual, they left some stuff unresolved. How did Psycho Grandson get 2 injured teens home from the accident scene? Grandma pick them up?
Second time this season H50 has killed off a big 70's TV star in a brutal fashion. Gavin McCleod watch out!

Am not a Halloween fan, a gore fan, or a Criminal Minds fan, so this was a rough one for me. But i love Hawaii 5-0 and I acknowledge that not every episode is going to be written to my specific personal preferences. LOL. I LOVED that they book-ended all the gruesome with both an opening and a closing couch scene. Ha!!! I adore Cath; she can hold her own with McG. Thus he ended up unlucky both nights. And I agree with him on the Notebook, but penance is a b*tc#, Super Seal. ;)
