@Watcher: You sure its only 9 left? Every other season has been 24. I know itunes said there would be 22 episodes if you google it, but that was made back in september and they said number of episodes may very. That would be unfortunate if they cut off 2, and there's no reason to either, the only time shows cut off seasons early is to let a new show on. Your not fitting a new show in that 2 episode vacated slot.
What'll btw be interesting to see if they keep having episodes where Stiles is a major factor without him actually showing up. I'm not sure if they were able to sign him on again, but it was interesting they had no fear integrating him last night without having him appear.

  2. Watcher

And of the 9 remaining episodes, Lorelei is supposedly in 3 of them (she was signed to do 5 this season.) So we know those 3 should be primarily Red John. Or maybe the writers will throw in a little Jane/Lorelei romance. They seem to want to push that idea, as bizarre and unbelievable as I find it. But whatever.

  3. Watcher

I hope you are right and they do wrap it up. BTW, I believe there are only 22 episodes this season, so only 9 more to go.

I am not so sure we will get "Jisbon" in the end. I can see this series ending with Jane being killed, leave for a different life, put in a nut house, jail or something I haven't thought up yet. lol Would I like them to get together? YES....but I really don't see it happening. I think if anything, they will just remain as friends and we will never know if it developed into more.

Continued: Their eyes were full of envy and yearning. So a Jane-Lisbon union is pretty much the only logical way things can go for them. I look forward to this wrapup. It should be highly dramatic as well as cathartic for us Mentalist obsessed fans after 5 years of highly enjoyable frustration. (And Visualize is not drawn too far from similarly powerful organizations in real life. In some ways it's almost a metaphor for them. Writers do get their ideas from what they see around them.)

    @rationalgal. ditto.

How many episodes are left? 11? Not many to wrap up this series, so things are going to move along. The hunt for Red John will certainly be part of every episode as Jane and Lisbon - who will be working together because no one else can be trusted - whittle the list of suspects down to one. Stiles will be a key person, closely involved with RJ but perhaps not on his side. We'll know at the very end. Whoever RJ is, he will be killed, maybe by Jane, possibly by Lorelei (she has some serious revenge coming). Lisbon will be in great danger but come out OK. It's just the way these stories have to go to keep fans from storming the Heller castle with torches and pitchforks. Jane will get his life back the only way possible - by getting together with Lisbon. The only really happy part of his life was when he had a family. He needs to have that again. Look at the Red Snapper episode and how Jane and Lisbon both reacted to Lisbon's ex-fiance's family life. Their eyes were full of envy and yearnin

@b&w&r hi there. hafner will be, i think, the thread that unravels the red john sweater. i think stiles must know red john. but as CK asks, i can't figure out what the relationship is. could red john be stiles' son or adopted son? that could give him a way to know about red john, even be in contact with him but not want to turn him in or see him imprisoned or harmed.

  9. Watcher

I agree 100% with TB, Keith, and many others. The writers have had no clue what they are doing since season 3 ended. They missed a great opportunity to wrap up the RJ story (timothy Carter was realistic at that point). We could have seen how Jane adapts to life after RJ. But Heller did not have confidence in their ability to do that, so they chose to string us along and I fear they will continue doing so until enough people stop watching and CBS cancels. I have decided I'll watch the rest of this season. If RJ isn't completely done- captured or killed- by then, I am done with the show. Life is too short and there are too many great TV shows. I realize that while I loved the first 3 seasons, I only liked the 4th, and am getting as much annoyance as entertainment from the current one.

@km breath sounds interesting. i will read it. simon's trying to set up financing. he should approach the french since he's god over there. avec la participation de canal +. that'll look good on the poster.

  11. CK

hum....jumping in here....I think Stiles does know who Red John is. He even led Jane to where Kristina Fry was. They are somehow connected but how is the question? Are they related? Was Red John his pupil? Is Stiles afraid if he tells then Red John will kill him? At the very least, he would probably lose Visualize and the life/position he holds. I believe that Red John does get some of his "friends/minions" from Visualize. He may still be a member. It is interesting at the very least.

  12. KM

Three weeks until next episode is disappointing. And, so is Elementary being given a second episode post the superbowl.

re patrick and his room. i loved the physical comedy of jane and the locks. the place had gone from monastic cell to looking like a scene from a beautiful mind. too much a window into jane's mind there to be left for the off-chance visitor. i think he kept lisbon out because she didn't need to see it. he always lets her in when he feels he's thought through it enough for her to play a role or that she needs to know what he's up to. she did tell him she had another job offer and he immediately popped his head out. he said "are you going to take it?" he must have thought about whether he really wanted to push her away, so when she asked, he said welcome to my nightmare. now she won't have deniability.

possible for this to happen? Let me know what you think, shoot your theories, why you think whatever, etc.

So let me pose the question: how can Stiles not know about Red John? I'm interested how it's possible. He is the man of Visualize and he knows those who worked for him---he certainly knows someone as famous as Red John, especially when he has taken such an interest in Patrick Jane. HE has lead Jane on that he knows more than he can imagine, he is able to get RJ's main friend Lorelei out of prison--I'm just wondering how it would be possible for Stiles not to know about Red John? It's an honest question, what kind of scenarios could there be for this to be the case? And if you know about Red John, you know how he works and what he does, your part of his side, even if you don't kill and engage in such activities. Visualize had such an influence on Stiles life, I'm just wondering how it might be possible Stiles isn't at least somewhat close with it. Knowing the Mentalist, it's definitely possible, we know about the lack of tying things together, but I'm wondering how it could feasibly be

@b&w&r, I definitely agree with your premise that the revelations about Ray Hafner are a catalyst for major plot development and movement on the Red John story. At this point I don't think the writers would torture us haggard viewers with a red herring so highlighted as Ray showing up 3 times and Lisbon actually getting some important straight answers from him. Not that there won't be further plot twists and intrigue. Three weeks until the next episode is unpardonable enough. To trick us with Ray would be cruel beyond imagining. Not that he has to be Red John, not saying that. But I believe the clues, such as they are, are real.

  17. huisclothes

@keith i have a feeling you're right about stiles not being a red john accessory or accomplice. at least, i would really like it to turn out that way. visualize kills people who pose a threat to visualize; not assorted women ritual-style. though red john has branched out. anyway, i would very much like stiles to be an ally and help patrick when he finds out his members are off murdering not on visualize business.

Yes, by the way, the stripper was just a ratings grab. They wanted to create a funny awkward scene but it never clicked. And the whole trying to make Rigsby look like an idiot was also contrived and kind of hard to watch. Lisbon in the past I could see really acting out on Rigsby for such an act or really acting out on the stripper. But this more tame and aging one wouldn't and it showed. Anyway, who else thinks the key to all this is the fact that Ray Hafner knows about Red John who he is and what not and that Jane finding out about this and how he acts on it will be the key to this plot? This cat and mouse game between him and RJ about how much he knows vs how much RJ thinks he knows will be very fascinating. Because once RJ finds out about Jane's knowledge, the dominos fall, chaos starts in the CBI and everybody including Jane is in real danger. We'll see the theme of finding who is on who's side, mole vs CBI finally and it should be fun.

The partner scene was interesting, not necessarily for Jane but for Lisbon. Even as recently as last year, she wouldn't have cared about what Jane does or him in his room. It's a non story. But she clearly was bothered by it. It upset her that Jane was spending so much of his time and life invested in something that he wouldn't share with her at any costs and tried to be as deceptive and quiet about it as possible. This whole thing kind of hurt her. And that surprised me. She also purposely "trolled" Jane by mentioning her job offer and saying she was considering it when she had no interest in it whatsoever. None of this really means anything(no there's not any relationship building up here with this) it's just interesting. It builds off how we've seen Lisbon change but it also provides some new insight into her. We criticize the writers alot but this was well done.

@rationalgal hit the point I think I've always known but don't always want to accept. This is entertainment, there's only so many loose ends you can tie up, you have to do what's in the best interest of ratings and that often means cutting things and starting from scratch in many ways if you believe that maximizes ratings. We do put too much into how everything should/doesn't fit(not that there's anything wrong with that) but there are some questions the show does owe us answers to that other shows would in a more conspicuous manner. The problem is the show created too many potential storylines, too many storylines with potential to really amplify and create something massive, that you can only act on a few of them and when you leave the rest out there you create an awkward cleft. But oh well, I guess the only reason I'm going on about this is because it became as apparent as ever last night how the intention is on catalyzing this RJ process fast and that in turn will mean many loose e

@ lisa re come in partner. all we wrote was that we thought it was sexy. not what implications it had for the story or if it was sexy for lisbon. you thought it wasn't. we thought it was. we all get to decide.

  22. KM

@huisclothes, I thought "Breath" was a great read. It's about two boys coming of age, extreme sports, extreme emotions, battling complacency, and testing limits: physical; relationships; sexual behaviors. The boys are mentored by a 30 something surfer whose wife is an ex-Olympian no longer able to compete. I find Winton a brilliant evocative writer, a bit of a genius, who has a stunning skill for conveying physical sensations. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. It would be cool if Mr. Baker could draw attention to him. I wonder if it will be shown in the US?

I too think they are making it up as they go along (and they have to be loving our "Paul is dead" detective work (where everyone tore apart Beatles lyrics, like "one and one and one is three," and played all the albums backwards looking for clues).

And I still don't believe Stiles is a Red John accomplice or accessory, either!

  24. TB

Sorry....meant if this had something to do with Jane's childhood, RJ WOULD have went after him sooner not waited until after he mocked him on TV.

  25. TB

I disagree. This doesn't go back to Jane's childhood. IF it did, Red John would not have hurt Jane sooner. It is in cannon that RJ only went after Jane when he mocked him on TV. I think this is simple storytelling, not some major psychology who done it. I think a lot of viewers give too much credit to the writers. I don't even think they know where they are going. That is why it is getting unbelieveable. Since, season 3 they do not seem to know where to go with the Red John plot, so they are making it bigger and more confusing. They have said that the show ends when the Red John storline does, so they keep adding stuff to it to stretch it out. If they would just end it and move to a different plot, the show could go on for years. Red John shouldn't be the main focus because it is getting to be STUPID and CRAZY.
