The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

by at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

It could be either Elizabeth Bogus or Vanessa Ray. I can't tell as the video is slightly out of focus. I think I read that Mariette Hartley is the victim.

hi all well I don't think Jane is that selfish personally, well he can be yes but he can be so generous too, right? we have many examples of that.
Of course he needs to be selfish to get closer to RJ, it could seem selfish for some while he actually wants to get revenge which is understandable. Sometimes he goes too far but it's like he doesn't have a choice and he choose RJ (his family) over the others, which I can understand somehow. thanks for the promo video, ouch indeed about you should try it sometime, he didn't look nice when he told her that, I hurt for her! I just cant wait for that episode, I hope I'll be home quick on Monday to see it.

Hmmmm. I think it's Elizabeth Bogush. Who's that? Uh-oh, she might be a married woman . . . maybe that other Wiley is her brother instead of her husband.

@entwife it's a hard question. we aren't far apart here. the difference here for patrick jane is i don't think on the inside he feels like he's manipulating. there's no detachment. he is scared because that's appropriate here. and he acts scared because that's also appropriate. the only way to hold the tiger by the tail.

I had the same thought, @huisclothes and @KM, Patrick's already been punished. If Patrick is play-crotchetty it'll be fun. But he looks genuinely pissed each time to me, makes me think he's disturbed about something, got a burr under his saddle. Can't wait to find out. Plotnick has always creeped me out. Never thought much about his skin, just kind of pale and has a sheen, he does look pretty young though. His voice is an awful lot like other voice samples of supposed Red John we've heard.

@entwife i see patrick as play-crochety and play-pissy. this strikes me as an episode that's going to have the tone and import of red scare. kind of halloween-y. nothing too serious. hope it's more than that.
i wonder who patrick kissed in the elevator?
does plotnick look like he has the world's most beautiful skin? he always glows.

@huisclothes Maybe we're not as far apart as it seems about Jane and Lorelei. I think he's genuinely afraid of her, sweating bullets what she might do or even not do, both to his person and in his hunt for Red John. By trying to do what she wants, anticipate that, bow low and be subservient, that's the manipulation I'm talking about. She's got all the cards and he really has nothing she particularly wants. He's scared, and he has to stay in that place of terror, placate her, give her what she wants, in order to be able to get what he wants from her. It's not loud and proud or dominant or cocky, but it still looks like manipulation to me. Do you think he's much less goal-oriented than that?

i think patrick's role in the universe is pretty much his role at the cbi. he's brilliant and entertaining and brave and dazzling and creative and because of this, he's privileged. he doesn't have to play by their rules. he knows it. and frankly, if the cbi was on fire, they should carry him out first. the world needs to preserve that gene pool.
the question is, will the universe have to punish him? i think he's been pre-punished. he gave at the office. i think he'll go through hell to get red john. but he'll get him and emerge cocky, incorrigible jane. so please, writers, no comeuppance. i don't want patrick jane to have to put on his pants one leg at a time. he's better than me and i'm ok with it.

Looks like Jane is getting a little crotchety in the promos for Red Lacquer. In the US one, he's aggravated at Lisbon and says What do you take me for? In this one he comes back pissy at her saying she should try kissing sometime. Ouch. Can't wait to see what this is all about. Then the dirty look he gives Splotnick or whatever that guy's name is, not that ole splotchy doesn't deserve it, he's a ready-made guy you love to hate! Then he walks off saying he's off to see Red John. Okay, I'm sure we don't get to see that visit Sunday, but what a set-up. Thanks for the clip, @KM.

all nice points about cautious jane as a manipulation. but let me say there is a difference when it comes to lorelei.
with her, we get to see him stripped down. acting like the rest of us would have to. hell, i can soothe her and placate her and drive her where she wants. he's playing scared just like a normal person.
he's got lots of arrows in his quiver. he never tried to hypnotize her or drug her or torture her or con her. this is patrick jane reduced to hoping and sweating and smiling. like all us sad sacks.
