The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

definitely. he's a very smooth and opaque character. the joker, the poker player, the actor, the secret agent. he always is the man with the plan and everyone gets in step behind him. remember in red menace when he gives the murdered mob lawyer's insecure son a driving lesson and he says (something like) everyone's a nerd, i mean, i am.
then in red sails in the sunset, when lorelei got back in the car finally, the way he had this big nerdy grin. the way she was so sarcastic with him. how she called the shots. i think we do see the real patrick with lorelei. not that he's always acts like a loser around her. but he can't mould her behavior and sometimes he has to dance to her tune. that's why i love her, we get to see him in a totally different way. and he's sweet and patient and empathic and gallant and vulnerable and honorable.

yes she's cute, I think how she feels about him is much more obvious than the other way round.

hi mimi.
teresa is cute when she's mad. she was so relieved to have him back. and she was angry and scared at how much control he has over her. he also doesn't spend any time thinking about whether he made her mad. he didn't mean to hurt her. he knows he can always run back across the burning bridge.

about the Guardian, I guess once you have seen TM, nothing really compares to it, I guess if I'd watched the Guradian before, I'd have liked it more. Simon played Nick brilliantly and there were great scenes, loved how he looked at Lulu in his gf's living room at night, she's eating a cookie and he's just eating her with his eyes, was a cute scene. I liked the story with the little girl that Nick's dad decides to be the caretaker for. etc.. but what I missed in it was this happy vibe, this humor that we can find in other shows.

hi all yes I think Jane heard her in the church but he probably took it well because to me it sounded like I hate you you're so irritating but not I hate you get the hell out of here. It was a I love you hate you.
That said, for sure Jane realised he went too far, he'll surely make up for it soon :-) and I'll lick my screen when that happens!

@rationalgal simon does develop wonderful tics and habits for his characters. the way patrick flicks his palm over his vest. the way he rubs his thumb over his fingertips. the cocky little cagney walk. the way he leads with his head when he makes a turn or wants to usher someone along with him.
jane was wriggling out of church when lisbon said i hate you. so he heard it. don't know if there was a link to the bear hug in her office. now i'm counting patrick hugging teresa instances. redemption - when he asked to rejoin the unit. crimson hat - good luck, teresa. red dawn - when he's been hired, he says thanks. she doesn't hug back.
other jane hugs. jason cooper in red barn. the sheriff in red gold. linus wagner in the pilot. the paralegal who got shot in red alert. probably others.

@ Anitraward 1 Okay. I've seen numerous articles that the origin of seasons 5 & 6 being renewed together comes from a tweet from an exiting writer and the information is not reliable. Seems like websites like TV Line, TV by the Numbers, Deadline, Cancelation Bear, Huffington Post, et cetera would know of this deal. I would think. And if they do know of the deal, then they would be falsely insisting that The Mentalist is in danger of cancellation, right? I hope your articles are correct. I sincerely do. Anyway, thanks for responding. Have a good evening, night, morning... And, take care.

KM, I also read articles that said seasons 5 & 6 were renewed at the same time. I believe we have 1 more year and then we are done.

Just one more mention of The Guardian. I highly recommend it, even tho a bit depressing, just to see how well Simon can embody any character he plays. I never see Simon in any of his films, only the character he creates. Many other acters just play themselves with different clothes and settings, tho they do a good job of that. Simon actually becomes the character down to speech patterns, body movements, facial expressions, general mannerisms. He doesn't even look quite the same, tho I can never tell just what the difference is. Anyone who plans to be an actor should watch how Simon does it. Brilliant!! You can see Simon as himself in that Paley Center video and he is totally different from any character he has played. Amazing!

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 14 Quotes

Bertram's suppose to be this real smooth player but he loses a couple of hands of poker and he has to bum everybody else out.
