The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

@ Entwife The "show me some skin" was my video I found by chance and kind of liked it! It fit my mood this morning!!! :-D
I think Mashburn was in Jane's little book, not shure though. Rationalgal deff. has a point. Hmmmm Mashburn = RJ?? Intriguing! And - oh man - if he finds out Jane/Lisbon have something going on! The repercussions would be epic!
OK, 16 min. to go for the new TM! Gotta get ready!

Sorry. The Mashburn comment was for @rationalgal It really would take some of the pressure off if the viewers knew who RJ was before everybody else. It would add a whole new dimension to the show, even more fear for the safety of the characters as they tracked him down because we would know the danger they're in. I like it.

hmmmmmm. @huisclothes It's definitely true Jane does like Mashburn, has fun with him and enjoys his company. Creepy. I forget. Was Washburn on Patrick's list of suspects? Be interesting to see if he starts showing up. About blue balls until season six. I'll break long before then. In fact I'm already making notes for steamy Jisbon scenarios to get me through. I hope we get something toothsome along those lines, like that video posted today, show me some skin. Really enjoyed the Darkness video, too. Can't remember who posted what, I think it must have been 4 pages ago. :) But, thanks!

More about Mashburn: Now consider that Lisbon slept with him and that RJ apparently loves her. He's not worried about Jane as competition because Jane set them up as a couple. NOW: If Mashburn is RJ, think how it will play out if Jane and Lisbon get together. Mashburn/RJ will be totally murderous. One woman he loved dumped him - no way will he allow another one to do that. His character throughout, whether he's cutthroat businessman Mashburn or serial killer RJ, shows he does not allow anyone to get the best of him or screw him over. The predator in Jane's repeated (why?) PBS nature shows will be stalking his prey and pouncing. Sometimes the prey gets away, sometimes not. That nature show will become life-and-death reality for Jane - and Lisbon.

After the talk about Jane not wearing his vest in the Masburn ep, I watched both of the Mashburn eps (Red Line and Red Hot). I think the missing vest was intended to symbolize Jane's vulnerability to Mashburn. Listen to their conversations in both eps. It's RJ meaningful all the way. Almost like Mashburn telling Jane he is RJ, and getting to know Jane for the use that may have. In Red Hot, Jane has his vest back on and now Mashburn wears a red sweater. Mashburn's ex-wife notes how, after she dumped him, something snapped in him. There was clue after clue that Mashburn is RJ. He has every one of the characteristics RJ needs to do what he does. And there was a definite handshake and the clear potential for them to be friends. No one else fits the RJ role better.

@ huisclothes,
A Hamlet twist would be fascinating, but hopefully Rosie and Guild would not share the same fate.

i think if lisbon started dating someone we'd see patrick run the gamut of emotions. teasing and blase' to lisbon and jealous and surprised at his jealousy to us. then we'd see lisbon surprised to be disappointed that jane seems to be fine with it. would be great. i'm grooving on the idea of the viewers knowing who red john is before the characters. it might fend off those of us who are ready to march on warner brothers with pointed sticks if his identity isn't revealed. and it would allow blue-ballers (like myself) to enjoy another year of foreplay. i would love them to do an arc mostly from rj's point of view. patrick and teresa are rosencranz and guildenstern.

we've had four episodes in which it would have made sense for jane and/or lisbon to fess up feelings for each other. code red, when she thinks they both have the virus. red all over, when they're locked in a sweltering box car. strawberries and cream, twice - when she has the bomb strapped to her and when he's on the phone with her and she's shot. and crimson hat, when he hugged her and said "love you" and then had the chance to confirm it when they were in the warehouse.
in code red, she would have been the protagonist. also in red all over. in strawberries and cream, he seemed like he was going there. in crimson hat, he initiated, she looked for confirmation and he dissembled. be interesting to see how they'd top these. i agree that the stakes would have to be life or death for one of them, or right after rj's death.

I think there is an excellent chance that for there to be a romantic relationship between Jane and Lisbon, that Lisbon will need to be the stronger of the two. She'll have to face her own fears and climb out on a limb. Or she will be so close to being dead that the fear of never saying it propels Jane to speak. I hope I am wrong. I just think she will have to push and that will be the domino fall that cascades into Jane being able to express himself verbally and physically.

You're right he'd certainly react this way but we as viewers would see how he feels about her as many are still not convinced there is more to it.
It would be a good twist imo.
Right I'm off tomorrow when I wakeup you'll all have seen the epi! Just Cant wait, like huisclothes said once, feels like waiting to open ur xmas presents!
I hope Ill find a way of getting some sleep! Night night

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 14 Quotes

Bertram's suppose to be this real smooth player but he loses a couple of hands of poker and he has to bum everybody else out.
