    @ huisclothes,
Stop looking, love. CBS is not going to spend a cent they don't have to on The Mentalist. Sure they might tweet the promos, but no money will spent on television promotion. They need to sell The Good Wife. It is up to The Mentalist to survive on its own. They treat it as a stepchild, all shows that belong to other studios find this to be true once they enter syndication and start earning their owners money. Syndication dollars seem to be the driving force of CBS.
As to who they could move to Sundays? Elementary which is a marginal success.. Person of Interest another Warner Bros. owned show that is seeing more syndication interest than their darling TGW. Odd thing is POI/ Elem. and TM on Sunday could net CBS good ad dollars. And TGW and Blue Bloods would fit better on Fri; same age demo. But that requires rational sense.

@entwife just catching up on your posts. had forgotten about sam bosco. guess patrick never told teresa what sam said. and we don't know all of what sam said. probably never will. yes, jane has to kill red john or ensure that he is killed. even if rj's shot dead, just to be sure, patrick should walk up and drive a stake through his heart. does patrick have a stake, a gun, a swiss army knife on him? how about a cyanide capsule that he jams up rj's nose?
of course, now rationalgal has my tail wagging about a sixth season. i'm ok if they find red john or identify him or something momentous but still have to catch him next season. though i'd be happiest with jane being completely thwarted yet again -- i love the rj thread so much and think it's what elevates the series. oh. and i still would love red john to take jane. like for the first 3 episodes of season 6. and lisbon rescues him.

  3. huisclothes

@rationalgal re: patrick's arrogance. the phrase, "pride goeth before a fall" has been trotted out on this site a few times. i keep feeling that the handshake thing may well be the instrument that leads patrick to outsmart himself. he was so proud -- really congratulated himself on what an amazing feat he'd performed -- when he took lisbon through the math of how many people he'd shaken hands with.

  4. huisclothes

rationalgal re: a sixth season. wow. they don't call you rationalgal for nothing. sounds like good thinking. makes me recall the les moonves article where he said the world shouldn't expect many new dramas from cbs this fall. let them stay with tm and tgw.
btw, as many of you know, my hub is a video maniac. as we were watching a movie, my eye kept flickering to the tiny tv he has on the end table where he was monitoring the televised universe and therefore controlling space and time. cbs was on without sound for two hours. they did three extended promos for the good wife. mentalist - zero. kind of outrageous.

  5. huisclothes

@entwife yeah, patrick jane, f-ck, yeah.

  6. huisclothes

@watcher if i can have patrick, you can have walter. he's definitely a fun guy. and jane is tall enough for all practical purposes. :D

    @Rationalgal
Your logical thoughts make sense and give me a good feeling for a 6th season. May it come true! I also like your season 6 outlook - sounds awsome! But, as you said, who knows what the writers have in mind! A lot of them are men, and as we all know, they think a little different at times :-D
Jane is deffinitly getting annoyed at things, including himself. 10 years he spent hunting this lunatic that keeps outfoxing and taunting him! Jane thinks he's the smartest in the room - always! But this doesn't add up with RJ. It must humiliate and infuriate Jane. I hope though, that he can acknowledge his feelings for Lisbon (to himself and to her) and not go the other way and push her away with glib remarks and hurtful behaviour. (I wish that for my own romantic heart as well as for Jane - he deserves some peace and joy)

  8. rationalgal

More thoughts: Jane's increasing harshness may be due to his increasing discomfort with his obsession. He wants to be rid of RJ! NOW! He yearns to get on with a better life like what he had with Angela, and that life includes Lisbon. Black Cherry made that extremely clear. His problem is his arrogance, thinking he's the only one who knows anything. He is starting to recognize that may not be entirely true. ("Come here, partner.") I expect that season 5 may well end with Jane and Lisbon recognizing how they feel about each other and determining to work as a team to get rid of RJ once and for all. Of course, RJ would find out and go after Lisbon, setting up season 6 for a lot of suspense and drama as Jane and Lisbon try to survive RJ's jealous attacks, outwit him and finally bring him down. Seem like a logical outcome, but since when do writers care much about that?

  9. rationalgal

OK, back again. Hard to keep up with you guys. Wonderful observations! I tried thinking of this cancelation thing logically and concluded they will go 6 seasons. 1. I read that Simon got a 3-yr $30 million contract with CBS at end of season 3. 2. Bruno and writers are too talented and bankable not to have scripts ready for a brilliant finale. 3. No time in this season to wind up the series in any coherent way. 4. CBS has to have SOME programming on Sunday night. Why not keep TM and TGW, since they have had high ratings enough to maintain that sufficiently for generous ad revenue. What would they replace them with that would be better? So they ride out the series through season 6, giving them a chance to establish other dramas in the Thursday spots.

Never mind my silly question. Of course we know a storm is coming with 5*16, and @Entwife and others have noticed a bit of ruffled feathers in the promos for 5*15. I really need to get more sleep. Alas miles and miles and miles and miles...

  11. KM

I've been thinking about "Red in Tooth and Claw" again. Does any one else feel that this episode had an air of the calm before a storm hits? I'm thinking about how considerate and friendly Jane was with the team with gifts, cooperation, etc. There is the whole poker as a metaphor for both life and the hunt for RJ too. Whose indebted to who, and the more obvious who is faking, bluffing, has the upper hand, etc. It was a good episode for inner team banter and relationship. And it was good to see Jane shifting his debt to Bertram for getting his charges cleared in 5*1 to gaining the upper hand through the poker tutorial. And, all this talk of Jane's obsession really makes you think about the victim, Linda, and her life's work. She studied flickers and she was good at banging away and solving problems. Just makes you think about everyone else. Jane and RJ. Lisbon and police work...

    @estatica and @katempw

The preview was just now on CTV. She deffinitly says "guessing"!

  13. anitraward1

You are right about Red John, he well not go willingly and no doubt be killed. I just don't think Jane needs to do it. I think Red John took Jane's soul and that's why Jane is fighing so hard, it's to get it back! Red John stripped Jane down to his socks. I think that Jane not even grieved his family propely and that's why he cried the way he did when K. Frye said what she said to him. It wasn't so much what she said but the fact that she actually made him think about his family without being angry and bent on revenge.

  14. estatica

@Watcher I'm pretty sure she said: "That's not police work, that's guessing." to which he replied "you should try it sometime". They both sound like they're on the verge of falling off again. Perhaps they're preparing us for 5x16? I can't wait! *bounces*

  15. Entwife

@antraward1 After we've seen what RJ is capable of, there's no way I would trust it to the police/investigative services. How many years has RJ been on the loose, plying his nasty craft and indulging his nasty urges, with impunity. He has shown that he can reach into any organization and achieve his ends. With impunity. As easily as Bret Stiles got Lorelei out of a federal penitentiary, I would never believe, at least in the world of TM, that Red John would ever be contained in prison even if just long enough to be executed. I feel Patrick Jane knows this in his bones. He can't leave it to justice with his help. He can't leave this to others. And RJ will torture Jane and kill his companions and colleagues for Jane's entire life. Nope. I view this as a righteous kill. Even Bosco came to see that and told Jane to do it. There's no other way. If the authorities kill RJ first, fine. Otherwise, Jane's got to do it.

  16. Watcher

@katempw- Just watched it again. I can't tell for sure, but it could very well be "guessing". Guess the fact that my brain wanted to hear kissing says something about where my head is!

  17. anitraward1

I know we all like Jane and we are on his mission with him. Butttt.........! We have to go in with our eyes wide open! Jane is engaged in the act of premeditated murder! What happened to his family was tragic indeed but do we want our hero to become a murderer for the sake of revenge. Or does he need to stand down and let justice take it's turn with his help.

  18. Entwife

@katempw Listened to that section two more times and it's hard to tell just from the word. But. Before Lisbon says That's just ki/guessing, she says That's not police work. That lead in makes more sense for That's just guessing. It makes it even more puzzling why Jane would be so venomous in his return, You should try it sometime. Now his response really doesn't make a lot of sense because surely he knows that police work has a lot of guesswork in it. Good observation. Can't wait to see the episode. Welcome, btw, glad you jumped in.

  19. anitraward1

Now you know that Jane will lie, cheat, steal and kill again if he has too to get Red John. I think it is a very interesting thing that he is doing. He is quietly methodically and diabolically wating until the day he can kill Red John. That is why Bret Stiles said "you are quite the apprentice." This is also the very reason why Jane is being compared to Red John. You are just like him! Jane grew up not believing in the justice system, what kind of justice do you really think he will dole out at any given time? This is the part of Jane I always wanted to know about but the writer's keep this side hidden. They hide the biggest part of his personality with humor.

I have been reading all of your posts over the past few weeks and really enjoying them. Big fan of TM and like all of you really hope this season is not the last. Just thought I'd weigh in on the 5x15 CTV promo: Is it possible Lisbon says "that's guessing" (not kissing)? That's how I heard it ....

  21. anitraward1

I agree but he is willing to kill and we've seen that before! Huisclothes, I really love his character but I still like to know exactly what I'm looking at. Jane goes into a whole other zone when it comes to Red John. I think that is the very reason he leaves Lisbon out of the chase because he knows how low he is willing to go. He can't take Lisbon because he is willing to go Hell to get Red John. That's why he told Lisbon not to chase Volker on his terms because Jane knows how dirty you have to get to get a monster!

  22. KM

I agree that most of the time Jane does a lousy job of treating his friends (Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby, and VanPelt) as anything but tools. He's the worst with Lisbon. Part of that could be that he takes her for granted, in much the same way that we all are prone to take those we love greatly for granted. We deeply trust that they are safe, have limitless forgiveness, and amazing powers to not reject us.

By the way, I looked at the TV Guide poll and it's 39% in favor cancelation and 61% in favor of renewal. And a few angry Psych fans weighing in.

  23. Entwife

The fact that Patrick may be at turns be crotchety, pissy, selfish, driven, manipulative doesn't change his corresponding turns of intelligence, loyalty, consideration, tenderness, or protectiveness of Lisbon -- and none of it changes my passion for this character.

  24. Watcher

@anitraward - you are right. He is dangerous and he will do anything to get Red John. OK, he is not willing to kill Lisbon, but he thinks it is justifiable to repeatedly hurt her, lie to her, etc. That's not cool. And that's not how a friend acts - and certainly not how a man who loves her (if he does) should act.

  25. anitraward1

I love his character but you can't see the whole Jane if you don't see that side as well.
