The Vampire Diaries Review: A Pierce to the Heart

by at . Comments

Someone has to tell Julie Plec and company that they got Valentine's Day all wrong: it's a holiday where one's heart is meant to race out of love, not fear.

But following the concluding events on "Down the Rabbit Hole," most Vampire Diaries fans are now in full-on panic mode: Is Tyler really gone for good? Is Jeremy actually dead? Is Damon truly a decent person?

And is Matt at least getting paid for all this overtime at The Grill?

Charlie Bewley on The Vampire Diaries

For the most part, this was a strong - albeit far from spectacular - hour of The Vampire Diaries. It meandered in certain places, most of them involving the irritation that has become Shane and the annoyance that somehow, prior to tonight, NO ONE BOTHERED TO ASK ABOUT THE CURE.

Sorry, my keyboard got away from me there. But considering how big of a deal this little elixir became for all characters, it was a constant source of consternation that no one asked the obvious question: How much of a cure is there? Everyone just heeded the words of a professor who claimed to know all just by... knowing it all.

But that ignorance did at least lead everyone to the island and to the well and, by extension, to the developments that now have every Internet user buzzing. Let's break each down:

Katherine is back. Not entirely shocking, as one astute member of The Vampire Diaries Round Table did make this call two weeks ago after that intruder broke into Shane's office. But while we've often joked at TV Fanatic that they ought to changed Katherine's name to Plot Device, I'm intrigued by her appearance here.

Mostly because I can't imagine she wants the cure for herself. If anyone adores the life of a vampire, it's Katherine Pierce, right? She craves power and she's all about survival. No way she's take a sip of something that would guarantee eventual death.

So... why does she want the cure? For whom? Those are the questions we ought to be asking.

Tyler is gone. We all love Michael Trevino and we all hate to see Caroline cry, but this departure would have more impact if Tyler didn't also skip town during The Vampire Diaries Season 2... and The Vampire Diaries Season 3... and was absent for weeks until last Thursday. The guy spends more time away from Mystic Falls than Bonnie's dad.

So, yes, he'll likely be elected Mayor in a couple years. But his exit here doesn't have that great of an impact. We've seen it many times before, although sources do say Tyler will truly be gone for an extended period of time. Still, his goodbye (sorry, his Until We Find a Way) led to one of my favorite moments from the night:

Caroline basically admitting she didn't want the cure. Thank you! This is one human being who has seriously evolved as a vampire. As Klaus said, she's become strong, ageless, fearless. And also gorgeous, of course. Let's not forgot gorgeous. Really, really, really gorgeous.

But Candice Accola gushing aside, it was refreshing to hear a member of the undead admit that it's sort of awesome to be a member of the undead. And I won't even mind the Klaroline chatter that will inevitable follow now, considering Klaus is right: these two do have that affection for power and strength in common.

Jeremy is dead. I mean, he's not really. Right? Right?!? I just don't see the series going there, no matter what next week's preview implies. It would be a bold move for the show, killing off a legitimate main character. And the fallout, especially for Elena, could go in any number of directions.

But Jeremy has finally come into his own this season as a hunter and as a really good wearer of wife beaters. Heck, I've been more invested in his storyline than the repetitive love triangle. I never thought I'd say it, but I really hope Jeremy Gilbert is not dead.

Which, of course, is exactly why he probably should be dead. The more a viewer thinks that way, the bigger impact a death has.

So that's where we stand heading into next week's "Stand By Me." Were you shocked by Katherine's return? Jeremy's apparent demise? Tyler's farewell? Totally and completely turned on by Vaughn's accent?

Sound off now!

No one ever really dies on this show, and I find Jeremy to be a very boring character. So even if he's supposedly dead, I really don't care. Agree about Tyler -- his departure was flat. And Shane needs to go asap (his storyline is just too convoluted and not very interesting). The only good scenes were Katherine's return, Rebecca snapping Stefan's neck, and Klaus seeing right thru Caroline (he knows her better than Tyler who she's supposed to be so madly in love with).

Hasnt Jeremy always been a hunter just waiting to be activiated...and if so, the gilbert ring should have never worked on him because he is supernatural? Does anyone else keep noticing holes in all these stories?!

Supernatural tied with TVD in the demo 1.0. Also had more total viewers. CW in trouble as this show is declining fast. With the new show coming I see even more fans leaving. BTW Jose Molina wrote last night's episode. That's right, same guy that brought us Trash And Ariel in Firefly. If he can't make this show good; I ask, who can? I like to see a reboot in the sense that we get more Sal Bro history............ Before this show is history...

--I think third sacrifice was back in 40s when that which in New Orleans told Damon to kill 12 people to ged rid of the sire bond.. That witch was doing black magic and maybe she was doing what Silas told her? It's a big coincidence that Damon had to kill 12 people, and for no reason, don't you think?
--Does anyone wonder how will Silas look now when he is awaken again? I didn't see him in promo for next week? And is he bringing dead with him? Or was that all a lie? That's all so confusing...
--Is Vaughn (the new hunter) going to be longer in the show? Or is he going to be killed soon?
--I don't know why Katherine stole the cure, I don't think she wants to become a human and make hybrids for Klaus with her doppelganger blood.. But I also think, if she wants to cure and kill Klaus- that's kinda stupid, cuz that's not really easy thing to do, she can't take down Klaus on her own.. But if not for Klaus, why is she doing all this Also confusing..
--I don't understand why was Damon just lying there when things were happening downstairs with Silas and all.. I know he's been tortured (poor Damon, he's always the one who gets tortured!), but nevertheless...
--What does Klaus think of Silas, he's not afraid that there's a chance someone stronger than him is going to be raised? I think it's stupid he didn't even try to listen to Kol...

How the hell is Katherine working for Klaus ? I dont believe that scenario one bit !! ... I doubt Klaus has her on his speed dial.Same goes for Katherine.

Oh wait, Katherine would have to feed Jeremy her blood, and she didnt do that did she? She just bit him. Oh crap there goes my theory. Jeremy cant be gone.

Everyone really thinks Jeremy is dead? I really dont. I dont think his ring will bring him back to life because he is one of the 5 now, which means he is a supernatural being. But Katherine (vampire) bit him, then Silus snapped his neck and killed him. Sooo... didnt he have vamp blood in his system when he died? I dont remember hearing that members of the 5 couldnt become vampires. Thats my theory on that, unless I missed a detail somewhere. And I think Katherine wants the cure so she can give it to Klaus, to redeem herself so she can stop running. I dont know about Damon Stephan and Elena. I think there needs to be some sort of love drama going on again because its been a little stale for a while now. Elena sucks so I dont want her with either of them, but I think we all know thatll never happen. Its pretty much what the whole show revolves around. I want Klaus and Caroline to hook up, mainly because weve never seen Klaus with anyone!! He would be hot in a sex scene!! Anyone agree with my Jeremy theory? I cant wait for next week!! Finally, a little action!!

It's driving me a little nuts that people are saying "Silas can raise the dead!" Why? Because Shane said so? Because the ghosts that Silas uses to get people to do as he wants say so? Nope. I think that is a big fat lie. I also wonder about the Gilbert ring and if it still works on Jeremy. I honestly wished Bonnie would die because I can't stand her character arc right now. She's like a bad Willow rip-off waiting to happen. I wonder if Jeremy is the only person capable of stopping her from going evil? (I'd rather watch her as evil though, sounds very fun!) Saw Katherine coming a mile away... I'm a core shipper but I rather like Stefan/Rebekah. Too bad that's probably done. And regardless, I am interested in seeing a Klaroline ship happen. I don't watch this for amazingly realistic situations(vampires anyone?!?) but rather for the wonderful entertainment value. And most of the time, they don't disappoint!

Katherine wants to give the cure to Klaus in order to stop running from him...she'll agree to take it and she'll be the human Doppleganger that will allow him to create hybrids again.
