Grey's Anatomy Review: Welcome to Grey-Sloan Memorial

at . Comments

I’m not sure how, after nine seasons, even the most simplest of things on this show, can tug on those heartstrings.

Grey’s Anatomy aired "Idle Hands” this week, an episode that focused on sad patients, changes to the hospital and ultimately what happens when you stop moving forward. Let’s break down the installment...

Callie and Bailey Pic

This Sucks, And We Don’t Say Sucks. Meredith worked on a teacher who finds out she has terminal cancer. Seriously, when the students came to visit her, I couldn’t help but tear up. Really, such a sucky situation.

The highlight of the cases was Alex and his young cancer patient. The jokes they played on Jo’s boyfriend were hilarious. Jenny Talia anyone? Too bad the OBGYN didn’t think so. Looks like the competition is heating up for Ms. Wilson.

Derek and Ross worked on a young girl with a brain trauma, which gave Ross the opportunity to deliver a perfect line: “I’m Derek Shepherd. It’s a beautiful day to save lives."

Nailed it!

New Mentor For Yang?

Let’s Go To The Carnival. April talked to anyone who would listen about her wanting to sleep with Matthew and his wanting to wait.

Is there a better spouse to have than Callie Torres? I don’t think so. This is a character that has grown in such a tremendous way and she is someone you want to root for all of the time. I can remember early on when she was Callie O’Malley. We have come a long way, huh?

He Or She? In the worlds cutest competition, no one even compares to Der and Mer. They started off super adorable with Derek talking to Mer’s belly. It only got better when we found out that IT'S A BOY!! Meredith and Derek are having a baby boy. I haven’t been this excited for a fake character’s pregnancy in a long time! Kinda sad but kinda funny at the same time. Who else is with me?

Side Notes:

  • A big shout out to Jessica Capshaw, who has played the character of Arizona perfectly all season. She is dealing with such a tremendous trauma and Capshaw makes it effortless looking. Definitely one of the bright spots of Grey's Anatomy Season 9.
  • Meredith was on her game in this episode, dropping hilarious lines about her pregnancy left and right. Always good to bring the laughs, Grey.
  • The interns, Jackson and Owen were right. The Lodux does look like a ton of fun!
  • Who else loves the new name of the hospital? Grey-Sloan Memorial has a pretty awesome ring to it.

Overall, a really enjoyable hour. Laughs, tears, and exciting news. Pretty much everything we love in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Did you like “Idle Hands?"

Sound off below and let us know what you thought. Is Alex now ready to admit and fight for Jo? How excited are you for Derek and Meredith? And check back later in the week for our Grey’s Anatomy Round Table.

Until next week, TV Fanatics ...

Catherine: She was on Smallville as Clark's mother. :)

The OBGYN is a jerk! Does he not know who he's up against????

LOL I loved Webber and Alex too...esp. funny that Webber would join in on such silliness when before he probably wouldn't have. And, well, I'd love Alex and Jo to get together, or at least for Jo to know how he feels and go from there. Maybe I get too 'involved', but sometimes I just want to shake April and say, 'What's done is done! Repent, stop beating yourself up and get on with your life!", although I can relate. I have the same guilt sometimes about other things. Hopefully her boyfriend will be more concerned with what they do going *forward* rather than what April did before they met. I'd like to see Zola talk to Mer's belly too, but that's mainly because she's so adorable that you just want to squeeze her! Is it just me, or did Arizona's fake leg look natural in the heels? If they can really do prosthetics like that, that's awesome.

I truly enjoyed this episode. It was heartfelt, sad and funny. Dr.'s Karev and Webber were hilarious. The scenes with Callie and Arizona were sweet and tender and I was extremely happy that Arizona was the initator of the moving forward in the intimacy department.

Boyd Crowder - why are you even on this site? According to you, you stopped watching during Season Five. Annoying.

Definitely agree that Jessica Capshaw has brought her A-game this season. Just think of all the things she's been through since she's lost her leg, and she performs them with an authenticity that is very heartfelt. She has always been a good actress - subtle, realistic and not over the top, but her storyline this season really gave her the chance to show us what she can do. Bravo, Jessica!

Any episode that makes me cry is great! Just one thing bothering me ... where is baby Lola? Would have been nice (& normal) to see her in bed between Mom and Dad when they were speaking to baby brother!)

The entire show was fabulous, quick wit and heart wrenching script and the way we traveled thru the new hospital was fantastic - Kudo's to the director. The scenes with humor and tears were terrific. Annette O'Toole was brilliant - I hope Emmy Committee remembers her at Guest Emmy Time. The father was great, too. Thank goodness we have adjusted to Arizona and Callie and the leg situation, it was getting tired - she survived- lovely to see their situation resolved. Bailey, Derek, Meredith, Christina, Cheif and Alex all top notch, for sure! The x-ray machine storyline was cute, too.

The person who played the teacher was Annette O'Toole. I looked it up too cause I was curious haha

OMG, I did not know that was Annette O'Toole? And does anyone else know that one of the interns is played by Debby Boone's (You Light Up My Life) daughter? Look for her-it's pretty easy to see the resemblance. But HOORAY for Grey-Sloan Memorial and it's compelling cast of characters, not to mention Shonda Rhimes deft hand at combining humor with pathos and medical wizardry. What fun it must be to have these amazing actors/characters and fill their minds and mouths with words each week. She KNOWS just who they are and never disappoints. In fact, it's amazing just how much we really DO care about these people and life is never easy at "the hospital." I couldn't have lved the "carnival" rant any more and man oh man, that girl is going to worry herself silly over whether to...or not to! The best line was, "God must have put him in front of you because he wants you to lead him to the carnival!" if God had anything to do with human relationships other than mess them up (just my opinion, but seriously). Callie is amazing and by the way, Jessica Capshaw is Stephen Spielberg's step-daughter...and hats off to her for making her obstacles so fully realized. As a couple, they have THE best relationship other than McDreamy and Meredith. All I want is a happy, healthy pregnancy and delivery. Take the drama anywhere but there. I just don't think I could take it. So, that being said, this episode really brought home just how hard it's going to be to run the hospital and how everyone is coming for something. Best of all however, it didn't take our dear Christina any time at all to figure out who was holding the reins of power and how best to use them to her own advantage. Right on Doc!

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 18 Quotes

If anyone's going to have a baby with two heads, three arms, and eleven toes, it's me.

Work keeps our mind active. It keeps us out of trouble. When we're not working, our hands are idle. And the devil will find work for idle hands to do.
