@huisclothes - I could be wrong, but I think most regular viewers, even if not as fanatic as us, would remember Mashburn. I think anybody who has been on more than one episode tends to stand out for people who watch every week, and his role was a lot of fun. That being said, I don't believe it is him, although I would enjoy being wrong. It would be a fascinating transition to watch if, in one scene, he starts out as charming, fun Mashburn and slowly reveals his RJ core.
I totally disagree that he is not charismatic or smart enough to be Red John. I think I feel about the Mashburn character almost like you feel about Jane. He is close to the perfect man, in my opinion.

wait, we're talking about two different episodes? Anyway, the questions are still the same.
Someone may have already posted this but I figured I'd give an update about TM's future. So TGW got that syndication deal they needed last week, there just about guranteed to come back.TM really is the only show on CBS that truely is on the bubble although they could perhaps surprise us and bring back NCIS NY. So here is the situation once and for all: If CBS decides to expand their sitcom lineup or upgrade U Boss to Friday night TM gets axed. If they don't, then TM will most likely be back. It's hard to get a read on CBS's plan for sitcoms and expansion with shows although its true they tend not to variate much. Writing seems to make it look like there might be a 6th season but that's getting into some real grey areas. Overall it looks better than I thought a few weeks ago but it's far from any sure thing. Ratings at this point now are also irrelevant, the show knows its fate and ratings won't change it now.

I hadn't really thought about either until you asked the question @huisclothes. And it's been almost two years now since that episode. I guess I just expect the RJ capture/kill thing would be so long and drawn out that it wasn't time to know yet. But time is closing in now.

@entwife once again, dunno. i suppose since i'm just thinking of it now almost a year later while making dinner, the writers didn't have to get that far. i bought it. i guess rj knew he wasn't in any danger. lorelei and the yetti were disposable and he didn't really want to kill patrick - who else has escaped so lightly even minus two fingers? (i think this member thing is all part of rj's pathology when it comes to patrick - two members, his and his.) was rj intending to take patrick to his lair, to dinner and a movie? what was the deal there?

I LOVE this about Patrick what you said: talk about cary grant. he would have done that scene brilliantly. also love when lisbon walks him away and he insists on being interviewed by laroche while drunk. patrick is so defiant. he will not be bullied. if someone's an authority figure, la roche, bosco, bertram, rachel when she tortured him, even rj in the limo, he has to give them the finger. and damn the consequences.
He slays me. *sigh*

I think at some point he'll have to realize his helplessness and enlist the help of his team and/or the other agencies involved. Maybe it will be part of his evolution as a partner? Not sure how that will satisfy his lust for personal vengeance though.

@entwife i think patrick has to trick red john brilliantly. like have red john think he's seen through the ruse and then it turns out there's a ruse within a gambit within a mind f-ck. that would be so satisfying for patrick and for us.

Ways to kill people are endless, especially in the spy trade. But what is Jane, Secret Agent Man? No way. He has no craft like that. I really don't think he has another gun, the only way he had the other is as a gift and it was confiscated, wasn't it? It's almost like Jane thinks finding RJ is enough, Jane'll just show up and think of something. I guess it's more likely he needs the identity and circumstances, location, etc., before he can really plan anyway. But plan how? Again, he has no craft.

@neha mashburn makes sense in many ways. if they were ending the series this season (which i hope they're not), i don't think they could count on the normal (not fanatic) viewer to remember who he is. so most of us have been going by who's appeared recently enough that people other than the habitués of this site would recognize. that aside, i think certainly the link between mashburn and lisbon adds a juicy complication. patrick knows they slept together without being told. he referred to it in jolly red elf when he says to lisbon, "we all have our secrets, don't we?" should we get a sixth season and should they bring back mashburn for an episode, we'd have to think seriously about him. while a fun guy, i personally don't find mashburn charismatic or even smart enough to be rj. i want rj to be a match for patrick - in beauty, brilliance, wit and charm - a tall order, i know. but i'm in the minority on walter.

The fact that Jane didn't have any bomb (kinda wish he had thought of that, but it wouldn't have been Red John anyway, right?), especially after he had enlisted the elaborate help of his team who could have provided such a thing, and we've only ever seen Jane with either a shotgun (an opportunistic grab) and a hand gun (given to him as a gift and the only pre-meditated weapon I can remember)----I doubt that Jane would come to see RJ prepared with a bomb. He may accept that he could die in the hunt or confrontation but I think he would do everything he could to live. If that was the only way to bring RJ down, I hate to think it, but yeah he'd probably go down if he knew for sure. I don't think the writers have that in mind for him. If they do, it will be a dark, dark day and I will curse them forever.

I still think Walter mashburn as RJ is the best theory out there. The fact that he loves danger, has a lot of power, is a player, is damaged AND has slept with lisbon makes me even more sure it might just be him! Imagine how creepy and theatrically awesome it would be if mashburn turned out to be RJ, that reminds me did Lisbon tell Jane about them already? i cant seen to recall that happening?

actually thinking about patrick's willingness to kill red john by dying himself. if he was, it would have made sense for him to wear a bomb as well as a wire when he went to meet red john in the limo. if he had had the classic shoe bomb (plenty of room in those herring boxes), the bruiser driver would have never found it. so patrick could make the judgement about what was going on and decide to trigger the bomb. better would have been to have a bomb he was able to plant in the limo if he wanted.

@ huisclothes, -I think you should trust a professional colorist. They will know better the amount of eumelainin pigment your hair has, whether it is black eumelainin or brown eumelainin. I have too much pheomelanin in relation to weak brown eumelainin in my hair that I lack the courage to have streaks, even though my hair color gets darker or deeper as time marches forward. And, sorry if I came off tight. Death in the family and doggie won't eat. I am afraid I have a case of the blue devils.*
I hope your husband feels better soon.
