The Mentalist Review: The Broken Memory Palace

at . Comments

"Red, White, and Blue" was a standard filler episode for The Mentalist. But an enjoyable one nevertheless.

Jane's Memory Game

The murder investigation highlighted some serious issues facing today's military. The first was sexual harassment against its female members. The ability to file an anonymous claim certainly seemed to have as many drawbacks as advantages. In the end, if no one is willing to officially come forward, then the claim goes nowhere.

I really appreciated that Cho took the lead in this part of the investigation because he's the person on the team with a military background. As he was quick to remind Hawkins in this The Mentalist quote

The next time you ask someone in this unit to watch your back you might want to remember how you watched hers. | permalink

Considering one woman under Hawkins command was killed and another was sexually harassed, it appeared he needed to take a little more responsibility for what was going on in his unit.

The other issue was the number of soldiers coming back with traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. I was amazed by Pete's battle to get through every day.

Of course Jane was the perfect person to go to for anything concerning memory.  I was relieved when Jane finally got around to telling Pete about his memory palace. I felt like I'd waited the entire episode for him to get to that moment.

But Jane was great in several scenes, my favorite of which was when he thanked the soldiers for their service in his own very Patrick Jane way.

The other was when he hypnotized Pete so he could sleep. I loved it when Jane uses his skills for good instead of evil and, even though he tricked Pete, in the end it was for the greater good. Not to mention the poor man finally got some decent sleep.

The killer was such a selfish, arrogant, jackass. He thought slashing some innocent woman's throat was the appropriate response to having to pay alimony to his ex-wife.  Well, that and covering up his illegal prescription drug side business but off course that was his ex's fault too.

The best line of the night went to Rigsby who told the good doctor…

Look on the bright side. In prison you won't have to pay for dates. | permalink

@Entwife - thank's for answering my question. It doesn't matter, I was just curious if there are any rules I didn't know about.
I think Lisbon has beautiful eyes. Neet colour - kind of grey-green-blueish, depending on the light. I also like Cho's eyes. They are so dark, you can't even see his pupils. I bet it's hard even for Jane to see a pupil dialation in Cho's eys! :-D

I think I must tend to look at the eyes no matter what the hair is doing. Just something about the side part, maybe it draws my attention away from her eyes or something to look at it instead? Who knows. Surely one of my many idiosyncrasies lol.

I prefer the center part. I don't like the bangs. Granted, she looks better with bangs than most women, but she looks better without them. And I like her hair with some wave/curl in it. I don't like it perfectly straight. I am shocked to discover I have such strong opinions about the hair of somebody I will never meet. :-)

@ Entwife, Emphasis eyes: More centered, emphasizes the nose:

btw @bonaduz Most of the links people put up get through and stay, so not sure why those particular links you and PAhometowner posted would be taken down. I thought one of my posts at the beginning of this episode discussion got taken down and I don't think it had a link in it. I couldn't figure out why either.

I like her side part. I liked her bangs with a side part in season two (like the team image at the top of this page), because it emphasizes her eyes, which I think are really lovely. She's wearing them that way in all the Bosco episodes and when Patrick asked her to dance.

@KM hmmmmm. I have not noticed Lisbon's clothing, have to look for that. I find her side part disconcerting for some reason, didn't notice a shift in TWBB. Always something new to notice in TM! My favorite hairstyle for Lisbon is her bangs, they look great, really show off her eyes and face to me. Not many grown women can pull off bangs.

@KM - glad to hear about doggie!
And yes - trepidation is exactly the word I was looking for! Thank you. It will go into my little black book!

G'morning, @ bonaduz. He ate better this morning. And, seemed to enjoy the salmon I cooked for him last night. Trepid is the adjective I'd choose to describe how the muted and darker colors, and how the music makes me feel. A feeling of trepidation. @Entiwife and his appearance is an interesting contrast to Teresa. The little prints, sometimes flowers, and colors of her blouse are livelier for her character. Maybe it is a bit symbolic of how she is seeing herself or the blossoming realization of her feelings. Total side note, but interesting how they shift her part. When they move it farther off center it draws attention to her eyes. It was more off to the center in the ultimatum scene of TWBB and, for me, made her facial acting more powerful. She said so much with her eyes, chin, and unopened mouth.

Good morning @KM! How's doggie? I also noted, that the music is kind of quieter, moodier, darker this season. Toghether with the lighting and make up it's very effective to - at times - almost make me feel...uncomfortable (not quiet the right word, but I can't find another one right now)
