The Mentalist Review: Unforgivable Things

at . Comments

"There Will Be Blood" brought back one of my favorite Red John minions. I expected to be thrilled, but that's not exactly how it worked out.

Lorelei Martins returned to beat the heck out of Julia Howard and I was surprised Julia's neighbors hadn't heard her screams and called the police.

When the CBI team later watched Lorelei torture and kill Julia via nanny cam, Jane looked as though he might be ill. Was he feeling guilty for letting her go or simply worried about what Lisbon's reaction would be?

Jane Confesses to Lisbon

When Jane met Lorelei and let her go, I knew he was in trouble. He told Lisbon he trusted Lorelei and Lisbon appeared horrified with the revelation. Lisbon's used to Jane snooping but that he went behind her back to find the second address and then didn't call her after speaking to Lorelei, that got her wheels turning.

Knowing that Jane slept with Lorelei - coupled with the fact that he admitted he trusts her after witnessing her commit murder - it may have eroded the trust Lisbon shares with Jane.

When Jane told Lisbon he only tells her about 30% of what he does, I wondered how much of the 70% Lisbon really wanted to know. But the one thing Patrick Jane has never lied about is that he will do whatever it takes to find Red John. That he was using Lorelei Martins to do it shouldn't have been a shock.

Jane's motives were clear but will Lisbon come to a point where she'll have to choose between Jane's mission and her job?

Agent Kirkland's return made my skin crawl. His relationship with Bertram sent up lots of red flags. We know Kirkland is in Red John's pocket. Was his chumminess with Bertram a sign that Bertram's in Red John's pocket? That Bertram is Red John? Or simply another red herring?

In the end, Jane gave Lorelei what she'd wanted: confirmation that Red John murdered her sister. Unfortunately, she didn't hold up her end of the deal. Not only wouldn't she share Red John's identity, she shot the one other person who could. That was just cruel.

And what the heck was up with Homeland Security taking over the case and custody of a comatose Jason? Didn't we go through this already with the FBI and Lorelei? And why did Lisbon seem so calm about it?

Lorelei wanted Red John all to herself and she got that. Finding her body with a red smiley face above it wasn't a surprise to Jane or the audience.  However, hearing Jane mutter, "She had it coming" was frighteningly cold.

Lorelei was one of Red John's more interesting minions and I was disappointed her run ended this way. More so because she seemed to have lost her intelligence and her innate sense of survival in her thirst for vengeance.

Now we're left to ponder if she managed to move the Red John story line forward in any significant way besides the knowledge that Jane had at one time shaken hands with Red John. What's your take?  Are we any closer to finding out the identity of the dreaded Red John?

@huisclothes - I think the reason they killed of Lorelei, especially the way they did, was to show Jane what his revenge would lead to if he continued to go after RJ with his 'I'll do anything' attitude. So, not only did she give him a vital clue (so we're led to believe) in that handshake slip but she's also a warning of sorts to him as well. Plus, she gave Lisbon a wake up call to her own feelings - and Jane to his as well, I'd imagine. Anyway, I didn't like her character and I'm glad she's gone but her episodes were certainly exciting and she did provide some usefulness to the long as the writer's do indeed do what they say and actually remember to use the handshake clue! With all the loose ends this show has, I'm surprised it's not fraying at the seams!

Also in ten years you would think that someone at the CBI would have recognized his different behavior. You can't control when the dissassociation occurs! If he can control that then the condition is not real.

If Patrick Jane is a dissociative personality, how could he have shaken hands with himself? Why didn't any of the Red Johns minions Jane has talk to recognize him? Why didn't Lorelei recognize him? How could Jane and Red John be in the same room at the same time or talk to each other on the phone? I get that we don't know what he does most of the time but you can not over look the facts that I have listed above.

yes he's a beautiful man! and he's even more beautiful to us because he's beautiful inside! (from what we know at least)

@Mimi The head shot of SB with tears in his eyes when he got his Star. All the beautiful lines in his face. Wow. I don't think I can recover. Whew. @estatica I agree. The writers have shown us there's more than just bro/sis between Jane and Lisbon -- may not fully develop (hope I'm dead wrong) but it's definitely there. @anitraward1 Really good point about seeing things the writers didn't expect. I think it ultimately makes for a richer experience when they do get it together and stop screwing around.

AHAH LMAO Entwife! you're welcome, yes I believe it's a myth:-) but you never know what it looks like when..

Elastica I agree there are things that you can't really explain if they are like bro/sis. Also in Fugue in Red and the devil's cherry, we know Jane feels at least physically attracted to her (when he's got amnesia) I can't see how you can have such attraction with someone you consider just a friend or like a brother. I have NO attraction feeling to any of my male friends. In the Devil's cherry it's quite clear there is more to it and I felt the writers were conveying it through different scenes. 'is there anyone who really knows who you are?" "Lisbon", come on! there is deffo more to it but at one point the writers have to decide which it is cos you can't have it both ways as it makes no sense anymore like Ani said.. so they'll have to be clearer which way we're going and stop the inuendos and looks..

Wow @Mimi! Love the pictures on that site. The sketch of him is fabulous. My favorite it the 2-fer in a suit where one is full length. I don't want to start a thing all over, but my goodness the man has big feet! The old wives tales must not be true, otherwise he'd never be able to hide that monster. It's a luscious picture! Thanks for the link :)

@KM About that Triangle . . . I have two words for you . . . back button. Usually just once. Occasionally twice. I will say no more. :-))

Yeah, don't go, @Watcher. You can hang in there one more season! @huisclothes You make a good point about Lorelei something besides the handshakes. She did give us viewers the possibility that Patrick could have a sex life. Definitely a shift in the character. Good call. @PATownhomes Wow, talk about Dark Jane. Him being Red John in a dissociative personality is totally there. You are willing to go the distance! I would grieve for weeks if that turned out to be true. It would shatter everything and I hope that doesn't happen for my sake lol! If it does, you can do the Toldja Dance for eternity!

Lisbon: That makes me an accomplice as well.
Jane: Only if you look at it like a very persnickety lawyer.

Lisbon: I have to learn that trick.
