The Mentalist Review: Unforgivable Things

by at . Comments

"There Will Be Blood" brought back one of my favorite Red John minions. I expected to be thrilled, but that's not exactly how it worked out.

Lorelei Martins returned to beat the heck out of Julia Howard and I was surprised Julia's neighbors hadn't heard her screams and called the police.

When the CBI team later watched Lorelei torture and kill Julia via nanny cam, Jane looked as though he might be ill. Was he feeling guilty for letting her go or simply worried about what Lisbon's reaction would be?

Jane Confesses to Lisbon

When Jane met Lorelei and let her go, I knew he was in trouble. He told Lisbon he trusted Lorelei and Lisbon appeared horrified with the revelation. Lisbon's used to Jane snooping but that he went behind her back to find the second address and then didn't call her after speaking to Lorelei, that got her wheels turning.

Knowing that Jane slept with Lorelei - coupled with the fact that he admitted he trusts her after witnessing her commit murder - it may have eroded the trust Lisbon shares with Jane.

When Jane told Lisbon he only tells her about 30% of what he does, I wondered how much of the 70% Lisbon really wanted to know. But the one thing Patrick Jane has never lied about is that he will do whatever it takes to find Red John. That he was using Lorelei Martins to do it shouldn't have been a shock.

Jane's motives were clear but will Lisbon come to a point where she'll have to choose between Jane's mission and her job?

Agent Kirkland's return made my skin crawl. His relationship with Bertram sent up lots of red flags. We know Kirkland is in Red John's pocket. Was his chumminess with Bertram a sign that Bertram's in Red John's pocket? That Bertram is Red John? Or simply another red herring?

In the end, Jane gave Lorelei what she'd wanted: confirmation that Red John murdered her sister. Unfortunately, she didn't hold up her end of the deal. Not only wouldn't she share Red John's identity, she shot the one other person who could. That was just cruel.

And what the heck was up with Homeland Security taking over the case and custody of a comatose Jason? Didn't we go through this already with the FBI and Lorelei? And why did Lisbon seem so calm about it?

Lorelei wanted Red John all to herself and she got that. Finding her body with a red smiley face above it wasn't a surprise to Jane or the audience.  However, hearing Jane mutter, "She had it coming" was frighteningly cold.

Lorelei was one of Red John's more interesting minions and I was disappointed her run ended this way. More so because she seemed to have lost her intelligence and her innate sense of survival in her thirst for vengeance.

Now we're left to ponder if she managed to move the Red John story line forward in any significant way besides the knowledge that Jane had at one time shaken hands with Red John. What's your take?  Are we any closer to finding out the identity of the dreaded Red John?

@Huisclothes - what would he seduce her over though???

@huisclothes Too right! Seduction comments are not sibling! Good catch!

i'd like to offer the tie-breaker about whether or not lisbon and jane have a bro and sis relationship. year one, when he said, i wouldn't seduce you over a meal, that would be very sophomoric. when a man says that to a woman, there's no way to come back from it. the die is cast. you might rebuff him. but he's not your sibling and you know where his mind is going when you bend over forward or backward. since the beginning, for me, all their interactions have been colored by that. even if i had no interest in him, i would remember that was said to me every day and every time i saw that person.

@KM and @estatica I, too, love it when Patrick gets punched in the nose. It's the funniest thing ever to me. He always deserves it and has only managed to duck once I think (have to watch and document :-)) -- in the episode with his wife as guest star. I LOVED it when Lisbon got him, I can't remember if it was once or twice. This episode had a baby in it, my other favorite Patrick Jane thing--he is so totally lovely with children, just lights up, I'm sure he was such a wonderful father. And maybe he can be again, eh?

@ huisclothes, How charming. Your husband does sound brilliant. And, my better half and I are more like you, I speak the working Spanish (and Danish), but he speaks the working French,

cont. Simon was kidding, but he was absolutly serious and made it clear, that everybody on the set had to be treated fair. Sounds like he is a very decent guy!

@KM - wow! I can't keep up with that many languages! Awsome that your kids have the opportunity to learn them all! I am able to communicate more or less successful in french and spanish. I spent one year in an italian speaking bording school way back when, and am still able to read and speak italian pretty good (even though I forgot a lot)! My older son is determined to go and live in Switzerland after high school. We'll see, he is only 13 yet!
@Mimi - we live in British Columbia, way in the west. Only Quebeq is french speaking in Canada, but all the kids have to learn french in school.
I read a nice story yesterday: This woman was a make up artist for extras of TM in season 2. One of the extras was placed on a certain spot, action was called, Simon walked in and she was in the way and got yelled at by the director. Everybody got back in their chairs, new set up, new 'action' was called, but Simon refused to act, until the director appologized to the extra! The director thought that Simon was kidding, but he was absolutely serious about it and made it clear, that everybody has to be treated fair! Sounds like he is a very decent guy!

all these children with language skills is so impressive. i guess this is the time to learn when your mind is still able to learn better. my hub lived in france and taught at the sorbonne and then went to med school in mexico so he sort of speaks french and spanish but winds up speaking a mix of both, alternating languages word by word. the only people who understand him tend to be italians. i think they're just nice and try hard. anyway, it's hysterical. he once asked a woman if she could had a table where they make clothes flat.
i speak what i'd call eating and shopping french. enough to spend money and stuff my face. i do have a pretty good vocabulary and accent.

Estatica

This sounds awful, but I love it when Jane gets punched. I wish Lisbon would punch him more. It would do them both a favour: 1)Lisbon needs to relieve some of her stress and 2) Jane deserves a good punch every now and then to keep himself in check. :D
