Castle Review: Life Changes and Sad Faces

at . Comments

Castle Season 5 came to a close with “Watershed," a finale centered around opportunities and big life changes. Changes big enough to make your jaw drop. So let’s get to it...

Caskett... Forever or No More? Beckett went ahead and interviewed for the amazing opportunity in DC, but felt the need to hide it from everyone. It may make sense to keep it a secret at work until you have a decision, but not from the man with whom you are in a relationship.

After Castle found out, he made an excellent point: She didn’t care enough to include him in the decision of interviewing for this job. That stings worse than anything else. But on the other hand, Beckett has to think of her career, especially when she isn't sure where her personal life is going.

Beckett nailed her interview and received a glowing recommendation from Gates. She met with her father, who asked her what she really wants and she admitted: the new job.

At the same time, Castle shared a touching scene with Mama Martha where she let her son know Beckett deserves this, but she needs to know where things are going. So what should Castle do next?

After being offered the job, Kate and Rick met on the swings, an important place in their relationship. Castle admitted that he wants more and they both deserve more. So, does that mean breakup? NOPE!! It means our very own Rick Castle down on one knee proposing marriage. I never thought I’d see the day!

Big kudos to the writers on pulling this off. Long time viewers had to know that this would come at some point... but at the swings? Seriously, how romantic.

It didn't feel forced. This next step felt extremely natural, which is something the writers have been able to pull off all season.

So, now what? We didn’t get to see an answer from Beckett and we know she wants the job. There’s no way she can leave NYC... it’s just not practical for the show. But will she stick around and end up resenting Castle? Looks like we have to wait until next season to find out. One thing is for sure, I’m definitely on team Mr. & Mrs. Caskett.

Side Notes.

  • Gotta love the close friendship between Espo and Beckett. He’s always had her back and he was able to recognize something is up. How will he take it if Beckett decides to leave?
  • Alexis is heading to Costa Rica for six weeks for a school trip. I’m pretty sure everyone can relate to Castle not wanting to have his daughter out of the country again. Paris anyone?
  • Girl time!! Lanie and Beckett finally had some necessary BFF time. Can we make a deal that this happens more next season?
  • Daddy to be!! Ryan dropped the bomb on his best bud that him and the Mrs. are finally expecting a baby. Anyone else agree that Ryan will be one amazing father?

So, what did you think? Did the finale live up to the expectations of the season or did it fall flat? The hour was pretty slow until those last few minutes, right? Will Beckett go to DC or stay in NYC? Will she accept Castle’s proposal? So many questions and no answers for a few months!

Hit up the comments and sound off on the hour. Did you love it or no? Will you be able to wait till September to find out Kate’s answer?

Tonya: I don't want to try to change your mind (as if I could anyway) but I do have an observation. I agree that Marlowe was of the belief that he could hit the Beckett angst button whenever he wished. I believe that the overwhelming negative reaction to the final 3 arc of last season will have an effect on the show going forward. Yes, the first few episodes of the new season with Beckett a FED are not what a large portion of the fanbase wants but i think it is an attempt to write this mess out of the corner it was put in. Overall I believe that Marlowe got the message. Certainly ABC did, thus all the sneaks, leaks and spoilers including the cliffhanger answers days, weeks and even months before the premiere. Sure issues will arise but I think the ridiculous Beckett angst button may be gone.

Vince, I simply don't understand how so many people continue to almost make a living trying to explain or justify Kate's bad behavior. The very fact that they have to spend so much time trying to legitimize her behavior speaks volumes in itself. It is a constant issue with this show and I don't think it will ever change. This is one of the reasons I don't want to watch anymore. If these writers, who are supposed to be so brilliant, can't create exciting storyline without making Kate into a bitch to do it, then we are all wasting our time here.

DianaR. Thanks about the equation for the proposal answer. It is so typical how Castle writers use ambiguity that way, but I did like how the writers portrayed Castle so serious during the scene. I hope we see a lot more of Castle in serious mode in Season 6. The lady on WOTCW is very good at explaining the plot driven issues as put forth by the writers, but she follows the same Castle writer bias on the Kate behavioral issues. IMO. In addition, I have noticed that many other media writers explain away a lot Kate criticism by suggesting that the viewers just don't visualize many things that could have happened off scene.

oh i don't know. in season 1, kate said, "everyone has tattoos" that's pretty stupid !!

okay the boys only just lost. We got them out for 117 but we only made 110. however half our team is U/14 and the other half U/15 and we played a team mainly U/16! I do not think they should get engaged. They cannot talk to each other. They cannot share. They are not open with each other. They keep secrets.
Just one piece of evidence. They are now essentially living together but they have not spoken about Castle's two divorces!

Vince, Your formula is hilarious! I’ve never been good at math, so thanks for calculating it.

Vince, I did read a response from the lady at WOTCW in which she explained why the relationship between Kate and Castle is the heart of the show. It did make me feel better.
At least we know we’ll get our NYPD Detective Beckett back in the fourth episode, or maybe by the end of episode three?

Use this formula to solve the proposal question: (No + (Not No)) + (No + (Not + (Not Yes))) = YES to Castle

Tonya B. You make a valid point about finding new viewers. TSATQ had the highest viewing numbers of any show in season 5 except 100th episode. Can you imagine a new viewer watching what is suppose to be a love story, but you are presented with that evil episode without any background on the characters? A person would think they were watching a bad soap opera. Long time viewers catch any lack of continuity right away. When I first started watching this series, the banter between them is what kept me watching, but I always thought the jealousy theme episodes were way overdone especially those involving interaction with the odd Kate boyfriends. DianaR. SK comments were in print version. AWM comments were meant to be ambiguous. For example, in 6x1 Castle interferes with case and gets in trouble which causes consequences. Don’t worry about breakup. In the teasers, Kate looks too much like a TSA agent in her outfit. I want my NYPD female cop back soon.

I am convinced more than ever that Marlowe and ABC are idiots. I would think that a show would try really hard to capture new viewers as they approach the season finale, and normally it should since the last few shows of any series season are usually big ones. But imagine a group of completely new Castle viewers who know nothing of Beckett's problems, or the buildup of Caskett, or the huge influence Castle has had on Beckett's life. If these new viewers managed to watch all three of the final Castle episodes, does anyone really believe that they would ever want to watch Castle again? I honestly think that most people would find Beckett to be an enormous bitch femi-nazi who is cold hearted, selfish, self centered, career driven, and most certainly NOT in love with Castle. Castle is her doormat putz. I strongly doubt that Castle captured many new viewers with the final arc of season 5.
