Castle Review: Life Changes and Sad Faces

by at . Comments

Castle Season 5 came to a close with “Watershed," a finale centered around opportunities and big life changes. Changes big enough to make your jaw drop. So let’s get to it...

Castle Season 5 Finale Photo

Caskett... Forever or No More? Beckett went ahead and interviewed for the amazing opportunity in DC, but felt the need to hide it from everyone. It may make sense to keep it a secret at work until you have a decision, but not from the man with whom you are in a relationship.

After Castle found out, he made an excellent point: She didn’t care enough to include him in the decision of interviewing for this job. That stings worse than anything else. But on the other hand, Beckett has to think of her career, especially when she isn't sure where her personal life is going.

Beckett nailed her interview and received a glowing recommendation from Gates. She met with her father, who asked her what she really wants and she admitted: the new job.

At the same time, Castle shared a touching scene with Mama Martha where she let her son know Beckett deserves this, but she needs to know where things are going. So what should Castle do next?

After being offered the job, Kate and Rick met on the swings, an important place in their relationship. Castle admitted that he wants more and they both deserve more. So, does that mean breakup? NOPE!! It means our very own Rick Castle down on one knee proposing marriage. I never thought I’d see the day!

Big kudos to the writers on pulling this off. Long time viewers had to know that this would come at some point... but at the swings? Seriously, how romantic.

It didn't feel forced. This next step felt extremely natural, which is something the writers have been able to pull off all season.

So, now what? We didn’t get to see an answer from Beckett and we know she wants the job. There’s no way she can leave NYC... it’s just not practical for the show. But will she stick around and end up resenting Castle? Looks like we have to wait until next season to find out. One thing is for sure, I’m definitely on team Mr. & Mrs. Caskett.

Side Notes.

  • Gotta love the close friendship between Espo and Beckett. He’s always had her back and he was able to recognize something is up. How will he take it if Beckett decides to leave?
  • Alexis is heading to Costa Rica for six weeks for a school trip. I’m pretty sure everyone can relate to Castle not wanting to have his daughter out of the country again. Paris anyone?
  • Girl time!! Lanie and Beckett finally had some necessary BFF time. Can we make a deal that this happens more next season?
  • Daddy to be!! Ryan dropped the bomb on his best bud that him and the Mrs. are finally expecting a baby. Anyone else agree that Ryan will be one amazing father?

So, what did you think? Did the finale live up to the expectations of the season or did it fall flat? The hour was pretty slow until those last few minutes, right? Will Beckett go to DC or stay in NYC? Will she accept Castle’s proposal? So many questions and no answers for a few months!

Hit up the comments and sound off on the hour. Did you love it or no? Will you be able to wait till September to find out Kate’s answer?

okay I will try and spell correctly!! two things about Our Kate 1)She has rarely shown much emotion yet emotion is what relationships are all about. Plenty of stuff happens in a relationship and plenty has happened in this one but no emotion! why? 2)Does she suppress very deep passions and emotions? The only time we have seen her being being 'caught out' was in their first kiss when she kissed Castle back but applied the tongue without thinking about it and then was clearly embarrassed!

To me it can only be a watershed event if Beckett changes for the best and permanently. She does this by being open with Castle ( and Espo & Ryan) and the relationship grows as it should. This isn't all that complicated. Just for the record whilst writing on the Castle Walls is magnificently written
She really is very soft on Beckett in that episdode whose name shall never ever be named!

Sunnykimmy- Interesting possibility re Castle/Alexis discussion and alternate proposal possibility. Why not present it as an ask on the writingonthecastlewalls blog. Do you think this might be what castle meant when...? There is a box at the top where you can ask questions. She is genuinely nice and exceptionally generous with her analysis. If she answers publicly- great. if she answers privately then you can share here. I'd love to hear what she thinks about that.

Also Danny, I agree with you completely, black eyes, bloody lips and all :D

OMG, I just had an epiphany! I was reading the watershed analysis part 5 on writing onthecastlewalls and people including me have been speculating that Castle already had the ring for a while when he proposed. And this review made me realize something. I remember watching castle's talk with Alexis in the finale and how sad and disapponted/disillusioned I think he came off. I remember him saying something about having to wake up and see things for how they really are and not expecting things to go how you want them to. And I didn't understand. I certainly didn't understand why he would propose after that. If he thought his relationship with Beckett wouldn't work out. But what if it had to do with having the ring, planning a romantic proposal at the right time and then having to rush it because she wanted the job and he needed her to know he was all in? What if he was sad about that?

Sunnykimmy- I think you are exactly right. Our Castle is no fool. He knows Kate didn't resist entirely. If Kate resisted the way we wanted her to, Vaughn would have been bloodied and on the ground. Kate knows how to defend herself. Castle knows that didn't happen and he also knows Kate let it go farther than it should have- a lapse of judgment- absolutely- but he also knows it didn't go where it could have gone- and so he's ok with it all. Not agreeing or disagreeing- just coming at it from Castle's point of view which at the end of the day is really the only one that counts! Now you are entitled to ask if Castle should have pushed more or been more upset, and you're entitled to, but that is colored by your feelings and your moral compass- not Castle's. You kind of keep it in your mind until it's relevant again....

@castlefan Vaughn was, coming on to Kate when she was in a relationship with Josh, undercover or not. With Castle, she reciprocated, pulled back when she realized what she was doing and then reciprocated again. The fact that she did immediately with Caste and didn't with Vaughn says a lot I think, especially from Castle's POV. Because, in Castle's mind, here's a guy that is way better than him in every way (or every way Castle thinks counts), showering Kate with attention and she didn't return his advances, which Castle surely got from the "He kissed me" instead of "We kissed". So the fact tat Kate did reciprocate with him but not with Vaughn is a big deal to him, I think, especially because he was aware that Kate felt taken for granted by him.

@castlefan, I agree that we should let the TSATQ thing go because Castle did. But I don't think that Castle let it go because he doesn't know the whole story. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what you mean? Because this is Castle we're talking about. The guy who can put pieces together where there seemingly aren't any and find clues where there also seem to be none. He's a writer and he's smart. Thinking that he let the kiss thing go because he didn't see her close her eyes IMO is doing a disservice to the character that is Castle and to his knowledge of Beckett. And by now, if anyone knows Beckett, it's Castle. I think he put the pieces together. He realized the fact that he pushed her away earlier wasn't received well by her. He also knows that something happened that made Beckett let Vaughn get close, but that in the end, whatever it was wasn't enough to make her cheat on him. And that's why he let it go. Let's also remember that Castle has been in the exact same place where Vaughn was, coming onto Kate when she was in a relationship with Josh, undercover or not. With him, she reciprocated, then pushed him away when she realized what she was doing, then reciprocated again, pretty much taking over. The fact that she reciprocated with Castle way back when and didn't with Vaughn says a lot.
