Castle Review: Life Changes and Sad Faces

at . Comments

Castle Season 5 came to a close with “Watershed," a finale centered around opportunities and big life changes. Changes big enough to make your jaw drop. So let’s get to it...

Castle Season 5 Finale Photo

Caskett... Forever or No More? Beckett went ahead and interviewed for the amazing opportunity in DC, but felt the need to hide it from everyone. It may make sense to keep it a secret at work until you have a decision, but not from the man with whom you are in a relationship.

After Castle found out, he made an excellent point: She didn’t care enough to include him in the decision of interviewing for this job. That stings worse than anything else. But on the other hand, Beckett has to think of her career, especially when she isn't sure where her personal life is going.

Beckett nailed her interview and received a glowing recommendation from Gates. She met with her father, who asked her what she really wants and she admitted: the new job.

At the same time, Castle shared a touching scene with Mama Martha where she let her son know Beckett deserves this, but she needs to know where things are going. So what should Castle do next?

After being offered the job, Kate and Rick met on the swings, an important place in their relationship. Castle admitted that he wants more and they both deserve more. So, does that mean breakup? NOPE!! It means our very own Rick Castle down on one knee proposing marriage. I never thought I’d see the day!

Big kudos to the writers on pulling this off. Long time viewers had to know that this would come at some point... but at the swings? Seriously, how romantic.

It didn't feel forced. This next step felt extremely natural, which is something the writers have been able to pull off all season.

So, now what? We didn’t get to see an answer from Beckett and we know she wants the job. There’s no way she can leave NYC... it’s just not practical for the show. But will she stick around and end up resenting Castle? Looks like we have to wait until next season to find out. One thing is for sure, I’m definitely on team Mr. & Mrs. Caskett.

Side Notes.

  • Gotta love the close friendship between Espo and Beckett. He’s always had her back and he was able to recognize something is up. How will he take it if Beckett decides to leave?
  • Alexis is heading to Costa Rica for six weeks for a school trip. I’m pretty sure everyone can relate to Castle not wanting to have his daughter out of the country again. Paris anyone?
  • Girl time!! Lanie and Beckett finally had some necessary BFF time. Can we make a deal that this happens more next season?
  • Daddy to be!! Ryan dropped the bomb on his best bud that him and the Mrs. are finally expecting a baby. Anyone else agree that Ryan will be one amazing father?

So, what did you think? Did the finale live up to the expectations of the season or did it fall flat? The hour was pretty slow until those last few minutes, right? Will Beckett go to DC or stay in NYC? Will she accept Castle’s proposal? So many questions and no answers for a few months!

Hit up the comments and sound off on the hour. Did you love it or no? Will you be able to wait till September to find out Kate’s answer?

In my mind, the premiere episode will set viewer expectations for an early wedding in S6 very high. Castle was so supportive of her and he was very subtle in initiating any concerns about her choice. Kate is the one who brought up issues related to her job choice in their short discussions. The two main issues were the location distance between them and the fact that they could no longer work together. This was so ironic because Beckett herself is the one causing the issues because of her job choice. That was so telling in the scene where Beckett talks about them being a normal couple and both sharing stories at the end of work day, but then Castle very subtly said that her stories would all be classified. By the time the show reaches the time travel episode, we should know if Marlowe is serious about an early wedding this season or rather will he create the usual fake tension between them in order to drag the engagement out.

And in addition to the WOTCW site which I know many of you frequent, for those of you who don't know, our own sunnykimmy has a great site as well- sunnykimhy dot tumblr dot com . Always worthwhile and cute stuff!

My issue was more with the proposal scene- Everything that was said was good and perfect- really perfect words- my issue was there weren't enough of them. I felt a bit let down that so much of the angst and ambiguity of Watershed was so quickly glossed over. The yes came too quickly for me and without a talk or anything. I would like to have seen that and gotten some clarification of the past. We still might, but for me time travels in one direction (at least until the time travel episode), and I am happy to move forward. For Caskett, the love was refreshing and reassuring. Tonya- you can watch it with no problem- really normal Castle angst and they'll be in NY. Hope this helps.

DianaR- I wasn't going to, but since you asked I was going to put something together, but in a nutshell. I liked it a bunch. I thought DC/NY was relatively seamless. The episaode was vintage Castle, and, most importantly there was a whole lot of REAL love between C & B. They were struggling with the job thing which is ok- 2 I love yous and a Babe. There was growth in that though Castle was meddling B was ok with it and even humored in a good way till it got in the way of the job- so really good episode.

nottrampis. Agree. As I have posted previously as well, the hasty job decision makes her look foolish. A long distance engagement makes no sense. The agent Stack conversation with Beckett in HF asking her about a future in five years somehow convinced her she needed to act right away. It is a shame that Castle has to be put in a life threatening situation before she realizes what a mistake it was to take the job.

err Our Roy montgomery I said her Watershed would be in Dc as well BUt it would make her look like a bimbo and it has. you cannot accept a job and get engaged when the two are diametrically opposed. She must be the only person n the planet to unable to see that. now over to Valkyrie!

DianaR. Agree with you totally. As expected, the time jump was used to cover over any precinct farewell with the boys. In addition, the writers want the viewers to visualize off screen anything that happened between Castle and Beckett after the proposal during the hiatus. Castle acted so mature over the job relocation. Sorry guys, but I have to brag a little about calling the Kate training shooting and Castle in the car crash with the bad guy. All that angst in those final three episodes and then to see them interact as a couple the way they did in this episode was a relief. In 6x2, Beckett faces her moral dilemma. It was so predictable. I will have more to say after TVF sets up their 6x1 comments section.
