The Originals Review: The Girl Who Played With Fire

at . Comments

The war is heating up on The Originals. The witches are growing more and more central to the story with each episode that airs. And witches are integral to a good Klaus story.

If there's one ace the original hybrid loves to have up his sleeve, it's a good witch.

Stealing Davina, the "Girl in New Orleans," away from his frienemy, Marcel? That just makes her an even better trophy witch.

Angry Davina

What is it with Klaus and his witches? First, he had the witches who put him in Alaric's body. Then he had Bonnie. Now? He wants Davina. It makes sense that an immortal hybrid would want to align himself with a witch as powerful as Davina, but considering he knows so little about her and how she came to be so powerful, he's wading into dangerous, knee-breaking waters.

Who is this girl? How did she get so much power? What event happened when she was 10 that caused Marcel to remove her from society and lock her up in a church attic? Did she have something to do with Cami's brother and the massacre at the church?  Or did Marcel make that happen so that he would have a place to stash his witch? Is that why he's so interested in Cami?

So many questions!

In a rather abrupt opening, Klaus revealed the secret of vampires to Cami and compelled her to act as his spy. And then he kept compelling her. He compelled her in ways that made me want to kick him in his hybrid, single-tear-shedding face.

I was just beginning to like the idea of Klaus and Cami and then he had to go and pull stunts like these and wipe her mind over and over again, the worst of which was when he compelled her to forget the reason she's even in New Orleans in the first place.

Her brother - her twin brother - was responsible for the massacre at the church. She doesn't believe he just snapped with no reason and wants to learn why he committed such horrific acts. Klaus told her to forget. Just like that. Forget it and sleep

There are probably some out there who'll say he's trying to protect her, and maybe he is in some sick and twisted Klaus-logic way, but the compulsion tonight was kind of repulsive. Klaus can be charming. Couldn't he just...draw Cami a pony picture and win her over to his team so she'd act as his spy because she wants to and not because he's using her?

He had her doing things under compulsion that he could've easily gotten her to do without it, like hang out with Davina and pass along a napkin leading her to the church. No compulsion necessary, Klaus!

Klaus' interactions with Davina were some of the best of the night. He knew what to say to make her question her allegiance to Marcel.

Marcel keeps her trapped in the attic - the attic of the church where the massacre occurred - and tells her it's for her own good. He says he's protecting her. Presumably, he's had her there since she was 10, so it's not something she's ever questioned until Klaus planted the seed of wanting to have it all. Power and freedom.

Using Tim as a way to get to her was classic Klaus. He doesn't care about Tim. He only cares about what Davina can give him. She called his bluff and he didn't back down, eventually throwing the boy she likes over a railing to get her attention. The only compulsion which made sense was erasing Tim's mind after healing him.

Something tells me Elijah's method for dealing with Davina will be somewhat more effective. He does have the gentler more honorable approach, after all. And he's awake now, finally.

He wants to stay with Davina instead of returning to Klaus and Rebekah, hoping that by doing so he'll be able to end the war between the witches and the vampires, protect Hayley, and they'll all live happily ever after. Elijah, ever the optimist.

Hayley's story developed a little more tonight, which is something that's been missing from the previous two episodes.

When the witches took her to a doctor in the bayou and planned an ambush, Hayley escaped with the help of Rebekah and a mysterious wolf protector who ripped their attackers to shreds. A mysterious wolf protector who can change at any time, full moon or not.

Is Tyler Lockwood in Louisiana?

Maybe this is why he's skipping his first year of college with Caroline.

Hayley's baby is apparently able to heal her from the inside, a by-product of being the progeny of a hybrid and a werewolf. Watching Klaus swoop in just as she started to faint almost made up for the despicable things he did to Cami's mind. Almost.

What did you think of "Girl in New Orleans?" Were you bothered by all of the compulsion? Is Tyler in Louisiana? Do you want Tyler him to be there?

I'm really loving this show! At first, I was worried it wouldn't be much, just a shallow spin-off; fortunately it stands on its own, it's even A LOT better than its origins (The Vampire Diaries)! Loved everything in this episode, don't have a bad thing to point out, I was watching and living it, really focused on it! Every character turned out to be interesting, I think Elijah and Haley will end up together, but without a love triangle (we're tired of it and this show must rise above that silliness...). By the way, Haley is growing on me. I´m kind of worried about Rebekah, looks like she might still arbor feeliings for Marcel, that is a threat to the show... Come on girl, don't ruin everything, ok?! I think that the priest holds some kind of power over the vampires, Marcel was weirdly diplomatic towards him.
Someone here already said that this show feels more mature than TVD, I agree, I've grown tired of TVD's imaturity and I'm no longer that young, so, The Originals fit my expectations better.

I think Haley and Elijah will fall in love. Apart from that, who cares about the love triangles, I love the fact that THIS SHOW is about "loving family" and not just teen love drama! Family bond and power/ money. That is the reality of being an adult. Go the writers for finally developing a REAL THREAD, of a story for us to watch. Not just 2 boys in love with 1 plain Jane. Of course it will be awesome if they add love stories here too, but it will feel real because it's not the main focus, it's just a part of life.

AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! I loVe this show! It's even better then TVD!! It's more grown up for the 25-35 watching fans, not just teens. It's mature and the story lines r more real and not teen drama. Also nice if Tyler the wolf joins the show and teams up with klaus!! A member of the wolf side plus Tyler was always more mature than TVD. Good on u writers! Each ep is good, and marcel has to be put down a noch. Klaus raised him and in return marcel stole his kingdom "LITERALY" it's time the originals took it back.

The best thing about this show is that writers didn't forget that Klaus is the anti-hero, they are times that his soft and more vulnerable sides are revealed and those times it makes us forget. I hated Klaus for constantly compelling Cami (I am falling in love with her character) but i guess this is Klaus, and just because he likes a girl doesn't mean it will change his baser instincts, the originals is far more real then TVD in character development very whedonesque and I am loving every moment of it :)

LOVED it. I have no complaints right now because I'm enjoying this show more than anything else I currently watch except maybe OUAT. Seriously TVD is #3 compared to those two. SO glad they gave the Original siblings their own show! I can even stand Hayley on this one... (I really do like Ms. Tonkin, just hate the character.)

I think Klaus finds Cami interesting which isn't necessarily the same thing as liking her (like he likes caroline anyway). He used all the compulsion because he's Klaus, he's paranoid and he needed her to do what he needed no questions asked and without telling marcel. She may have done it by herself but he doesn't have the time to find out if he can trust her (since he doesn't even really trust his own family).
I liked seeing Cami's backstory and in a twisted way Klaus prob was trying to help and also keep her focused. Killing two birds with one stone as he says. I loved this scene as it depicts his character so well, he is so conflicted all the time and genuinely has a hard time seeing the right way to go about things.
As for Cami as a love interest and him forgetting about Caroline, I don't think its really like that. Caroline to him is his opposite, full of light and maybe even capable of saving him at least a little. Cami can understand him and that interests him because I think he wants to understand himself. If something was to happen it wouldn't mean that him and Caroline would never happen he said he wanted to be her last but he didn't vow celibacy until then. Caroline so isn't ready to be with Klaus now and they are immortal so that's okay for now. She hasn't had to really deal with the consequences that come with being a vampire, she continued on at school, she graduated, she went to college with her best friend. She's practically living a human life. What I love about the orginals is that they are vampires living vampire lives they aren't always trying to fit into the high school world and caroline isn't ready for that. maybe after college when its noticeable that shes not ageing.

Hey peoples choice awards are going on and they have favorite on screen chemistry and they have an other option. So I obviously put Klaus and Caroline. Can you advertise pls to vote for them even though it s not one of the options. Cause if we vote enough for it and win when it wasn't an option it will prove that we are invested in this ship. Check out this link and vote if you want this to happen.I felt its important to vote for this ship or else if we give up we will loose out. Pls.

what I really don't get is how some of you think Klaus is in love with kami..... what is this the 3rd or 4th episode and you think he's in love already?...such naive love sick puppies on here.

But what Klaus did to Cami was NOT OKAY! Someone slip her some vervain already!

This show is getting so incredibly good! I would never have expected it! Bye bye Mystic Falls

The Originals Season 1 Episode 4 Quotes

Over the course of my life I've encountered no shortage of those who would presume to speak of good and evil. Such terms mean nothing. People do what is in their best interest, regardless of who gets hurt. Is it evil to take what one wants, to satisfy hunger even if doing so will cause another suffering? What some would call evil, I believe to be an appropriate response to a harsh and unfair world.

Cami: I don't believe in evil as a diagnosis. I think you have unstable personal relationships, stress related paranoia, chronic anger issues, fear of abandonment. I think you could benefit from talking to someone. Professionally.
Klaus: I think I prefer to talk to you.
