The Big Bang Theory Review: Something-Something on the Side

at . Comments

I got itchy just looking at Leonard's red and irritated chest. How did he stand it? Why is Leonard friends with Sheldon again?

Paying For Past Mistakes

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 8 was just odd. It was disconcerting to watch Sheldon be not just calm, but overly so. I'm surprised his friends didn't send him to a doctor for a brain exam. Though, Leonard should have gotten one too for torturing himself with that sweater.

If Leonard was going to play it out in order to win over Sheldon, he should have at least taken some Benadryl. I mean, really! Penny was spot on when she asked if the sweater was made of bees. His chest certainly looked like it was giving him that bad of a reaction.

I'm surprised that neither I nor any of his friends figured out why Sheldon was so calm. Of course, he already paid for the movie. That really was the only logical explanation, since Sheldon having a lobotomy was out of the question.

Leonard was a sucker! Sorry, dude. Overall, it was a pretty funny ruse that Sheldon played on him. And it went in line with his obsession with the trick flower and can. Sheldon may be super intelligence, but he has the sense of humor of a child.

While Leonard and Sheldon were playing each other to see who would win, Raj was having girl troubles. And while Penny meant well, she only made the situation worse...then better... and ultimately worse again. All of which really was Raj's fault.

"What is wrong with you?" It was sad, yet hilarious to see Raj yell at himself in the mirror. He really needs to learn some people skills when it comes to interacting with women.

I'm glad he didn't end up with Lucy again, though. Amy and Sheldon both have issues, but it works for them for the most part. Lucy and Raj's individual problems were compounded when they were together.

Perhaps, Raj can finally move on, take some lessons from Penny, and not offer to be "a little something-something on the side" again. That was a hilarious come on, though.

While Sheldon and Leonard's story provided the funnier overall moments, the best lines were that one from Raj and this one from Howard:

Howard: If I may, he has so little self-respect and is so desperate for the smallest crumb of affection, she could literally sleep with his own father in his own bed and post the video to YouTube, and he'd still buy her flowers and ask her to be his bride.
Raj: He's right.

Amy calls Sheldon ‘diabolical’ at the end of this episode and frankly I have to agree with her. Leonard is his own worst enemy for playing along with a prank Sheldon has been planning for years, but it doesn’t soothe the soul to see this genius of a hapless geek acting so goddam mean to his best friend. In fact he’s at it twice, trying to get his girlfriend to suffer a face full of water from a squirt flower. As Amy herself suggests, he’s obsessed with childish things, and his petty and deceitful treatment of Leonard is reminiscent of school kids slyly pushing each other into stingy nettles or thorn bushes: immature, idiotic and hurtful.
In fairness, I get the comic potential and truth be told Leonard’s plight did provide great lines: ‘Is the experiment that you’re an idiot?’; ‘What’s that jumper made of, bees?’; ‘Sheldon being reasonable – It’s freaking me out.’ Yet I couldn’t help thinking this Itchy and Scratchy style physical comedy was over the top. These two are meant to be best friends. You don’t put your best friend through this sort of agony – Barry Kripkie maybe, or Will Wheaton, when he was Sheldon’s Public Enemy Number One, but Leonard? Really?
There was a side plot as Raj had the opportunity to catch up with Lucy. I never warmed to his ex-girlfriend. I enjoyed the scene at the Cheesecake Factory where Penny harangued her and the aftermath at Penny’s flat. Here was a succession of quick one liners which rocketed out of the four actresses mouths. Bernie and Amy stealing drinks and food because Penny is [suddenly] such a dreadful waitress was hilarious. However I didn’t think the ''racist' lines worked. These should simply have been cut out. They made Penny sound unworldly which she is not. It was a bad miscalculation on the part of the writers and rather stuck out in an otherwise amusing few scenes. Penny isn't supposed to be dumb and incapable, she's an actress who’s been in plays and is studying psychology at night school. Well, at least Raj can finally bury that part of his heart and even got set up with a proper date, which was unsurprisingly something of a disaster, [‘What the hell is wrong with you???] but I hope it opens the way for more bad dates for Raj as the series has missed the geeks trying the dating game recently.
Ultimately I was uncertain whether I really enjoyed this episode. Sheldon and Leonard spark off each other well and so do the girls, but it treads water a little and both denouements leave a sour taste in the mouth.

I'm wholeheartedly agree what Fifty and ElenaGreece wrote!
I just add that they have to make Penny dumber and occasionally buzzed to make it believable that someone like Penny would actually love that fat whiny annoying hobbit. I just wished this show had options like on the fanfiction site, I would click on Amy and Leonard in the "without filters" and then click on apply This show turning into one big clusterf**k!

I chuckled a little bit when Sheldon made Leonard wear the sweater but by the end, In Leonard's place I would have strangled Sheldon, even with Amy as a witness. This was mindless, vindictive cruelty on Sheldon's part to subject his best and probably only true friend to this torture. Leonard ended up looking like a crazed lobster. I suspect the writers will get some serious fan reaction to this episode and not in any kind of good way. For the first time in six and a half years, I truly disliked Sheldon.

@ mnementh

You're kidding right? - Leonard the douche had that coming and karma is a you know what. He was the one that failed to returned the Movie and Sheldon only told him a lesson how it was to be waliking in his shoes.

@ Jonas

Kidding? Absolutely not ! The only douche in this episode was Sheldon.

I think it was a lame episode. The Howard-Sheldon story was odd and unfunny, and the Raj story was simply dreadful. The writers made him such a pathetic loser, it's simply unbearable to watch. I did not enjoy Lycy's comeback, either. It's a sad and horrible story plot for poor Raj, and I'm afraid she's here to stay. I cannot understand why he is so desperately in love with her, and I also cannot understand why Leonard still lives with Sheldon, and not with his girlfriend...Is this comedy, dear writers;

I know more than one comment has hit on "dumb Penny," but I don't think they played that up like they have. It actually seemed rather familiar to me the scene of visiting a friend at their work and distracting them and they screw up and don't wait on you like a customer but take you for granted -- I mean it didn't seem dumb or anything to me (and funny when they were so hungry because they didn't get their orders or say a word to her about it)!

@ Keith Vlasak

IR romances involving whites in TV does not last because the racist white audience will gag.

@ George

Rubbish ! Please remember, racism works both ways.

I didn't enjoy this one. Lame story... That girl of Raj again... she is one of the ugliest I have seen in American TV ever...Please for the love of GOD, get rid of her and get a hot girl. Damn!!!

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 8 Quotes

Leonard: How about that? Sheldon's being reasonable.
Penny: Yeah, it's freaking me out. I'm gonna go.

Leonard: I'm gonna show you what's in the box, but just ... promise not to flip out.
Sheldon: Why would I flip out? Is it a spider? It's a spider.
Penny: No, if it was a spider, Lenny would've flipped out.
