Grey's Anatomy Review: Speak Now

at .  Updated at . Comments

Winter finales often make it feel like Christmas came early. Sometimes a jam-packed hour of television makes for the perfect gift.

Unfortunately, once the wrapping is undone and the gift is revealed, you're not always left entirely satisfied.

A Beautiful Wedding

A lot happened on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 12, and I almost feel like it was just too much all at once. Without focus on a number of pivotal storylines, I missed the emotional connection that I'm so used to grasping on to with previous Grey's finales.

I know that I won't be alone in saying that this has hardly been one of my favorite seasons, but you can bet I'm in for the long haul.

I'd like to think that the first half of Grey's Anatomy Season 10 ended on a relatively good note, as it certainly left me wanting more. However, I can't say that I'm dying to find anything out. This feeling is so different from seasons past.

Let's break down what happened...

Like most Grey's weddings that don't always go as planned, April's big day was no exception. When I spoke to Sarah Drew, she promised the final five minutes of the installment would be shocking and definitely worth our while. I know I'm in the minority here, but I was really hoping the Mapril wedding would go down without a hitch.

All I could hear while Jackson was professing his love for April was Taylor Swift's "Speak Now". Sure, every word was sweet, but it was also predictable and felt like a scene straight from a rom-com. I couldn't help but think:

Poor Stephanie! Poor Matthew! So, the big question is: What will April do? Do you think she'll still go through with the wedding or will she run off with Jackson?

Another cliffhanger included Derek and his call from the President of the United States. I love McDreamy and am intrigued by this storyline. I'm just throwing this out there, but what if there was a crossover episode with President Fitzgerald Grant from Scandal? Wouldn't that be awesome?!

Lastly, we're left to wonder if Alex's dad is going to be okay. Shane was experiencing flashbacks from the night Heather died and feeling too invincible and thought he was able to save anyone. It's a good thing that Richard showed up to help Shane back away and to hopefully help Alex's dad.

Side note: Props to a few people who left comments suggesting that something was seriously wrong with Shane. All this time, I thought he was just being a jerk. Clearly, he was losing his mind and himself without sleep, being hyped up on energy drinks and being haunted still by Heather's death.

Aside from the surprising moments, Cristina and Meredith reached new levels of annoying. On one hand, I was glad that they were finally fighting verbally and throwing everything that they had to say out there.

Then again, I felt like it was a long time coming... maybe too long. I'm not even sure if they made up or not. Either way, can we please not see them arguing ever again?

Meredith's Turn Down the Aisle
Cristina's Turn

Other thoughts:

  • I get that the staff at SGMW is tight-knit, but why didn't we see April with any of her family members? There wasn't a single scene with her talking to her parents or even her sisters again.
  • It was hilarious that both Cristina and Meredith asked April if she was bailing on her own wedding. We know why they asked. April, go watch Grey's Anatomy Season 3
  • How incredible was Justin Chambers as Alex in that intense scene with his father?! He totally brought his A game. Be sure to check out the Grey's Anatomy quotes to rehash Justin's unforgettable performance.
  • I've said it before and I'll say it again. I absolutely love Jolex! How cute were they outside the barn? She makes Alex happy and he really deserves her.
  • April gave away butterflies in boxes as wedding favors. That's brilliant! Forgive me but I'm in total wedding planning mode currently.
  • Don't forget to return next week to pull up a chair and chime in on our Grey's Anatomy Round Table

Overall, I thought that "Get Up, Stand Up" was good but not great. It gave us a slew of storylines to look forward to for the second half of this season. For that, I am thankful.

There's much to discuss between now and the show's return in February. Yes, you read that right... FEBRUARY! So, comment away and share what you thought of the winter finale.

What did you like or dislike about this installment? What are your predictions for the remainder of the season? Will April run off with Jackson? What do you think is in store for Derek? Have Cristina and Meredith made up?

I hope Matthew finally realises that Kepner isn't the woman he deserves and he leaves her at the alter.
Kepner and Avery will follow a GA tradition that nothing is straight forward when you are a couple. Alex should know that he has always had gf problems, and his 'dad' is gonna give him more heartache

So I just wanted to check if in this part of the review f Grey's Anatomy Callie and Arizona do or don't exist? becuase nothing is being said about them.

I am probably the only one, but I don't like April with Jackson. April did not believe Jackson to be a worthy suitor. Probably because she wanted to be with someone of her faith. This is something that I don't believe she can set aside, she failed her boards because she was guilty of setting aside her beliefs. This was a cute little shocker worthy of Grey's but I would like to see a couple of people who take their courtship without too much drama. That is one thing I miss about ER, they used to view love and courtship with a quiet realization. Grey's seems to be all about dropping bombs.

@ Aykme

Don't worry you are alone Aykme on not liking April and Jackson. And you are right about how she has treated Jackson since they had sex. And If everyone should go re-watch season 9 again. I really hope that April marries Matthew because she seems to really love the guy. Side note: right before jackson stood up did anyone notice how everything that the reverend said about relationships worked out for every couple for example when he said about stress in a relationship and sticking together through it would make them stronger, they showed Bailey/Ben a little bit apart (OCD thing) and Jo/Alex (his dad issues) they were totally together. That was super cute!!! But all of those fans that DO NOT WANT APRIL AND JACKSON WE NEED TO RALLY TOGETHER!!!

@ kiera14

I disagree. I don't believe for a second that April really believes in her faith the same way she once did and even if she does Jackson is not the type of person to interfere with that part of who she is. He is actually very respectful, despite their little interlude prior to her boards. I really don't like Matthew for April, he is a little too simple for her.

@ Aykme

True...I don't want April with Jackson because I know what it is like to be with someone who doesn't share your faith and, while it's not necessarily a problem for everyone, I think it would be for her. She told him she wanted to be with him right after he came back from the burning bus but a lot of emotions go through the air when something dramatic like that Aykme said, relationships are about what happens when the courtship and drama is *over*.

@ sha_angelico

Everybody is forgetting that Jackson April & Matt are to blame for this. I think Steph is the only one that even though she questioned if Japril were over each other she didn't get a grasp of the all scenario. I truly think think Jackson was trying to move on focusing on the hospital & Steph, & was genuinely exasperated by April when she said wanted him when she just got a guy who she pictured to be with & fit in her planned world. Apart from not having expecting to do what he did, i bet we'll see he was just as nervous & embarrassed. April instead of take a time to think what she wanted, after she declared to Jackson & after Mattasked if she wanted to call things off bc of Jackson & she hesitated, she decided to go on with the wedding after Jackson was hard on her & bc it was the best thing for her, to move on too. And Matt go on with the wedding after seeing April's reaction to Jackson & after she hesitated practically saying to call things of bc of Jackson was wrong. He's a nice guy & even looked like he expected that situation but really I think April will get tongue tied but go on with the wedding after this would be a HUGE mistake. She deff. love who Matt is & what he represents but she's not in love with him. Even with if she was, no priest on his right mind would allow the wedding to go on without the couple sleep on it.

I loved the finale! I was totally surprised by Jackson's declaration. I thought it was just angst and would not actually happen. I always believed her and Jackson would end up together but not now. I still don't think they will get together now. I don't think she'll acknowledge her feelings for Jackson...she won't do that to Matt. Matt's a sweetie and I think she genuinely cares for him but not like Jackson. I feel for Stephanie and Matt. Jackson did what Sloan advised...and he just burned his life to the ground because I don't think April will go with him. Alex's reaction was priceless. Speaking of Alex, did I miss an episode? I didn't realize Jolex was at the point of marriage and kids. During the last episode, it became clear to me, Ross is Bourke in the making. Bourke and now Christina's absence, leaves a whole in the canvas...for that type of personality.

@ sparkle

I don't recall Jolex discussing kids or marriage prior to this episode. Alex was just caught up in the moment after having that super intense instant with his dad and then attending April's wedding. He has to be thinking about kids and marriage, though, since he's helping planning Halloween kid parties and all.

@ sparkle

I don't think Jolex said anything before about that...maybe an offhand comment about in-laws but nothing definite. It's so great to see him happy, even though I didn't like him at all in the first seasons.

Kay, the Sloan reference was where Jackson repeated what Sloan said right before he died-if you love someone, tell them, and tell them loud and often. Don't leave your feelings unexpressed. That's not a quote, of course, but that's the gist of it. I miss Sloan, he was one of my favorites!

@ sha_angelico

That's right! I remember ! Thanks. I loved Sloan too. Such a great character and easy on the eyes.

@ Kay

I miss Sloan and Lexie. Mark did miss his chance to tell Lexie he loved her too when she did the most amazing declaration of love. I still can't believe we did not get to see them getting back together. It was cruel.

@ nini

I mean Yang and Owen.

@ nini

Mark told Lexie he loved her a lot. I mean almost every chance he could. Lexie is the one who wigged out on him. She did it when his older daughter Sloan moved in and when he got Callie pregnant. Look, love is not a bubble. The true test of an relationship is what you do after you are together. Mark and Lexie never survived this, neither did Yang and Sloan. True love is the ever after, like Meredith and Derek. We will see how well they do.

@ nini

He did tell her and what kind of life they would have, but it was right before she died so they couldn't do anything.

This episode was tense.
I agree that Karev and Jo were the best part of the episode.
Calle and Arizona are really depressing to watch, like I though Callie already embraced her as she is and now she's trying to get her to be who she used to be? Really?
Shane is annoying. I get that he wants to be the best, but he just overworked himself to avoid the guilt of telling Heather to go to the basement. He butchered Alex's dad on that table.
Leah was likeable in this episode.
That Jackson moment was totally unnecessary! How many chances did he have this season to tell April how he feels and then he waited until her wedding day to tell her he loves her? Sounds like he barely loved her if he waited til last minute to tell her.
I feel bad for Stephanie and Matthew, they did not deserve that humiliation.
I totally agreed with Karev's reaction to what he did.

What was the "Sloan reference" that Jackson made? I totally missed it!

The writers have done a great job of making April a like able character. I loved this episode! It had a lot going on from Bailey & Ben, Calzona, Alex & Jo, Mer & Der, Shane and Mer & Christina. I don't like how Mer & Chris have been fighting, but I'm glad it seems to have reached it's peak this episode and now it can be resolved. I really hope Christina gets a good ending, something fiting for the character and her happy ending. Finally, I knew something would happen between Jackson and April and through out the episode there were subtle clues. Still, at the end I thought it was too late, and was shocked when Jackson stood up and said his part. He is so gorgeous, how could any girl turn him down? Poor Stephanie, the look on her face but most of al, poor Mathew! He's a virgin and this was his wedding day! Most likely, even if April doesn't say yes to jackson, the wedding is ruined and off! I imagine April would run off and leave them both at the church.
Love the Sloan reference, had to add that.

I really liked the mid season finale. It felt like classic Grey's to me. It wasn't that much drama today but I totally felt invested into the characters as always. And although I was pretty sure this wedding wouldn't go down smoothly I was surprised anyway that Jackson chose THAT moment of all moments. If I were April I think I'd punch him into the next century ...afterwards we could discuss kissing and staring in his beautiful eyes^^

Really? What's boring about a man who puts together a flash mob to propose, sets aside his feelings to have his bride's former lover attend the wedding and holds his bride's hand from behind a wall on their wedding day to tell her that he'll see her more often as she is dressed now and looks forward to every moment. Boring is not word.

@ Delitepolite

Me too, I think Matthew's a sweetie. There might not be all the drama there was with Jackson, but I love him. Hey April...if you don't want Matthew, can I have him? :)
He's adorable.

Grey's Anatomy Season 10 Episode 12 Quotes

I love you. I always have. I love everything about you - even the things I don't like, I love. And I want you with me. I love you and I think that you love me, too. Do you?

Who do you think took care of her? Kept track of her? Got her committed so she wouldn't hurt herself? Who do you think took care of your kids? Your best was worthless. I was the dad. I was the kid, but I was the dad. You were nothing. You were gone. You're worthless.
