This is what the letters "OMG" were invented for.

Over the years, television has inundated viewers with one shocking death after another, with some shows specializing in stunning fans.

Game of Thrones offs characters left and right, and no season of Grey's Anatomy is complete without an epic natural disaster or killing.

Still, that doesn't mean those shows don't shock us with the lengths they will go to produce drama - and they are very far from alone.

Which of these memorable TV deaths was the most stunning? Which left your jaw affixed to the ground (possibly for years on end)?

1. Dr. Derek Shepherd

With Patrick Dempsey wanting off Grey's Anatomy, his beloved character was blindsided by a semi toward the end of Season 11.

2. Jon Snow

Rest in peace, Jon Snow. It is definitely now official: no one is ever safe on Game of Thrones.

3. Will Gardner

We never would have guessed Will Gardner would have been killed off of The Good Wife especially after everything Will and Alicia have gone through. It's a death which is still shocking and continues to play a big part in who Alicia is becoming.

4. Rita Morgan

Rita Morgan on Dexter was shocking because Dexter was a serial killer. Dammit, his people were, oddly enough, supposed to be safe! Seeing her dead in the tub was graphic, but it was the gut punch to Dexter that really hit home. How they played with our emotions through a killer was truly stunning.

5. Dr. Lance Sweets

Though constantly mocked for his youth and relative inexperience, Sweets became a beloved member of the Jeffersonian team. Unfortunately, he never saw his thirtieth birthday, as he was brutally murdered to cover up a conspiracy. Harry Nilsson's Coconut song will never be the same.

6. Moira Queen

The death of Arrow's Moira Queen was shocking in its brutality. Her stabbing death was a knife to our hearts.

7. Nicholas Brody

Nicholas Brody's character might have run out of story on Homeland but that doesn't make his death any less shocking. Fans loved seeing him go up against Carrie...in every meaning of the phrase.

8. Matthew Crawley

Dan Stevens wanted to leave Downton Abbey so the writers and producers KILLED MATTHEW CRAWLEY to make sure the character/actor could never return. Yikes!

9. Tara Knowles

Gemma THOUGHT she would get away with murdering Tara Knowles on Sons of Anarchy but she was found out in the end. RIP Tara!

10. Vincent Nigel-Murray

The loveable, brilliant English squintern was constantly spouting off random bits of trivia to hide his insecurities. Everyone, especially the fans, were shocked when he was murdered by a sniper's bullet meant for Agent Booth. (His death also marked the night Bones magically got pregnant with Christine in a hookup fans never got to see.)

11. Harrison Wright

Another shocking Scandal death, Harrison Wright's departure at the hands of Papa Pope was expected given Columbus Short's real-life need for Olivia Pope but that didn't make the mood around OPA any less somber after they received images of his toe tag on a morgue slab. Of course, we never saw his FACE so there's always a chance Papa Pope just faked Harrison's death...

12. Vicki Donovan

Vicki Donovan's death during The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 7 was shocking because it set the tone for the entire series. NO ONE IS SAFE. Vicki was also the first vampire transition of the series and the first supernatural death.

13. Finn

Finn murdered a slew of Grounders in his quest to find Clarke, and by doing so set off a chain of events that led to his ultimate demise. Even though his actions were drastic and seemed a difficult turn to come back from, his death was still shocking. Whether it was his actual exit from the show that surprised, or that his end was at the hand of Clarke herself -- a mercy kill to save him from the unrelentingly painful Grounder justice -- Finn's premature death definitely left fans in a state of disbelief.

14. Marissa Cooper

Whether you loved or hated Coop, I think everyone can agree her death in the season 3 finale left a big hole in the O.C. universe. The show never rebounded from her absence and only lasted one more season with polarizing Taylor Townsend essentially taking Marissa's place in the group. Suddenly Orange County wasn't the same place we'd grown to love.

15. Oberyn Martell

Oberyn Martell's eyes were GOUGED OUT OF HIS FACE! OMG. We still can't get that vision out of our brains.

16. Gus Fring

One got the feeling Walt would win his inevitable "Face Off" with Gus Fring on Breaking Bad. That doesn't mean the way he orchestrated his rival's demise - not to mention the literal interpretation of the drug kingpin's final episode - wasn't stunning.

17. Leslie Shay

Chicago Fire Season 3 started by killing off Leslie Shay, one of the series' main characters.

18. Detective Carter

As one-third of Person of Interest's core cast, it was shocking and heartbreaking to see Detective Carter killed just as she and Reese were forming a deeper bond. Her tenacious attitude and rapport with Reese and Finch is definitely missed each week. (But we're LOVING Taraji P. Henson on Empire!)

19. Neal Cassidy

Neal Cassidy's time on Once Upon A Time was short lived. It was hard to believe when Neal was killed by Zelena because there was so much left to his story with Rumple, Henry, and Emma. It's still hard to believe that Neal was killed.

20. Bill Compton

How do you annoy fans even more a lacklustre farewell season? Kill off a beloved character of course! Yes, the finale of True Blood made us think there was hope for Sookie and Bill, but all of that faded into oblivion because Bill was adamant that he had to die the "true death." Shocking, but horrific writing for sure.

21. Hershel Greene

It's expected that someone will die during every major episode of The Walking Dead, but Hershel's death at the hands of the governor, and with Michonne's katana no less, left mouths agape and eyes wet with tears. His was also the most spoiled death of the series thanks to the #RIPHershel hashtag on Twitter. Oops?

22. Denny Duquette

Sure, Grey's Anatomy is set in a hospital so characters, both guest, recurring, and lead, are probably going to die. But that didn't stop us from being shocked when the writers went there with Denny.

23. Daniel Grayson

He wasn't the first Grayson to bite the bullet, but he was the least expected of the lot! Revenge just isn't the same without Daniel Grayson.

24. Allison Argent

As a supernatural show, people are bound to die. It's sort of the hallmark of a series of that nature. But that doesn't mean we miss Teen Wolf's Allison Argent any less.

25. Alcide Hevereaux

Let's be real. The saddest part of Alcide Hevereaux's death on True Blood meant no more scenes with a shirtless Joe Mangianello.

26. Athelstan

No character on the series had as interesting a journey as Athelstan. He went from monk, to slave, to tiny Viking, to father and was constantly at odds with his God. What started as a master/slave relationship between Ragnar and Athelstan, grew into a very special friendship based on mutual respect and love. When Floki viciously murdered the former monk after he reconnected with God, he took a piece of Ragnar's soul with him. In fact, the Viking King ultimately asked to be baptized - renouncing his pagan beliefs - to join his friend in the afterlife.

27. Joyce Summers

In a world full of vampires, witches, and werewolves, death was commonplace. However, when Joyce succumbed to the real world sickness of a brain tumor, no one saw it coming. The Body was full of raw emotion, from Xander putting his fist through a wall to Willow frantically searching for a sweater; the episode is easily one of the best and most memorable of the series.

28. Zoe Barnes

Frank Underwood PUSHED HER IN FRONT OF A TRAIN on House of Cards Season 2. We're still not over it.

29. Omar Little

Sure, Omar Little hurt a lot of people. But they all deserved it. He never knew that convenience store run would be his last.

30. Lt. Col. Blake

It was really huge to have a main character die back in the olden days, and this was even a show about war. The thing is, he had been discharged and was leaving for home, but his helicopter was shot down and he never made it. It left the most sour feeling and the whole family cried as if we lost someone we knew. This was a comedy, mind you. We were little kids, but it still felt oh, so very wrong.

31. Janet Fraiser

Doc Fraiser was a long-time fan favorite, with a commanding presence that belied her 5'2" frame, intimidating even twenty-year military veterans. She died suddenly and unexpectedly from stray weaponsfire while stabilizing a wounded airman. And unlike many other deaths on this show, this one was permanent.

32. Walter White

Was there any other end for Walter White besides death? It was bound to happen at some point, right? Most fans probably expected Jesse or Skylar to be the one to pull the trigger but the cancer got him in the end.

33. Nate Fisher

I still cannot believe they killed of Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under. That's another instance in which death was so prevalent on the show that was founded on the death of their father and circled the family funeral parlor that the idea Nate would die. He had a brain issue in the first season that returned in the last. Surgery went fine! Just when we were breathing easy he got a clot and died. Dumbstruck and crying. I'm welling up now. Dammit.

34. Capt. Roy Montgomery

He was Kate Beckett's mentor, Captain, and friend. Little did she know that he was involved in the conspiracy that led to her mother's murder! When Hal Lockwood set out to stop Beckett from continuing his investigation, it was Roy Montgomery who shockingly took a bullet for her. Too bad for Beckett, there was more than one assassin on the loose.

35. Death

Ironic, huh? Death was stabbed to death by Dean on Supernatural.

36. Eddie Thawne

Eddie Thawne died a hero on The Flash. His death was the show's biggest shocker to end Season 1.
