Grey's Anatomy Round Table: The Return of The Nazi?

What's Grey's Anatomy like without McDreamy?

It looks like the new season is going for a lighter tone, and we're pretty excited about it.

Join TV Fanatic Writers Stacy Glanzman, Amanda Steinmetz, Elizabeth Harlow, and Ashley Bissette Sumerel for a discussion of Grey's Anatomy Season 12 Episode 1 below.

Was there anything that surprised you about the season premiere?

Stacy: Maggie throwing that punch was certainly surprising, not to mention totally awesome. I'm also pleasantly surprised to see they're keeping the slowed down music around.

Elizabeth: No? I mean, I didn't really go in with any expectations of what would happen, but there were no big surprises or twists anyway. Everything that happened made sense based on what we know of the characters. I was a little confused about Arizona's rent situation...she's got to be making really, really good money, and why rent a place you can't afford?

Amanda: Not really. Everyone was where I expected them to be. However, I find it highly unlikely that someone with a job like Arizona's would need help with the rent.

Ashley: I think I'm mostly surprised by the lighter tone, and I'm really happy about that.

How do you feel about the dynamic between Meredith and Amelia?

Stacy: It has potential to provide plenty of humor. I like the Maggie in the middle dynamic. I'm sure there will be more conflict, but they will figure out how to live with each other.

Elizabeth: They're both strong personalities, and anybody who's ever had roommates knows there's always some tension. I loved what Meredith said though about not liking Amelia but loving her because she's family.

Amanda: I think they're in as good a place as they can be right now. Their personalities are always going to clash but they love each other regardless.

Ashley: I'm really excited about it. I think Amelia is going to challenge Meredith in some interesting ways.

Bailey is chief! What's you reaction?

Stacy: So happy! She deserves it and good Ben for reminding her that she has to fight for what she wants. Her speech during surgery was awesome. There was no way she wasn't getting it after that.

Elizabeth: About time! She's been being groomed for this for a really long time, and I can't wait for the return of "The Nazi."

Amanda: Finally! She's been perfect for the job for so long now. I'm also interested to see how much of "The Nazi" returns to her in this new role.

Ashley: I'm thrilled! This was one of my favorite things about this episode. She more than deserves it, and her speech was fantastic. I also agree that this has the potential to bring back the old Bailey – thank goodness.

Name one thing you wish would have been different about this episode.

Stacy: I did not understand Arizona's need for a roommate. Even with lots of pro-bono, she should have plenty of money. It didn't make sense.

Elizabeth: I wish there would have been some more time to go into why that horrible woman was accusing Maggie...why her? My guess would be that she was a racist as well as a homophobe, but that wasn't explored. It felt like an unfinished thought.

Amanda: I wish we could get more interaction between Jo and Alex. His scene at dinner revealing that he used to be bullied felt thrown in there. We barely saw them interact before that scene.

Ashley: My biggest pet peeve is the music. Everything else felt more like early Grey's, and in a good way. I wish the music had been more like it used to be, as well. I'm not liking these covers at all.

Did you have a favorite quote or scene?

Stacy: I laughed at Stephanie's line about Arizona being immortal after surviving a plane crash, car accident, and a shooting. It's nice to see the show poke fun at its own ridiculousness.

Elizabeth: The one I mentioned earlier, what Meredith said to Amelia about family. So true.

Amanda: I loved Maggie's reaction after she hit the woman. He shock was hilarious.

Ashley: I agree with Stacy. I loved that line and the way the show is willing to poke fun at itself.

Grey's Anatomy Season 12 Episode 1 Quotes

You wanna know why bullies bully? It's 'cause they can. Maybe you've got it worse at home or maybe you're just bullying to keep from getting bullied, but really, it's because people like me, like this girl at our table, are alone and small and vulnerable. And pushing us around makes you feel better about your sad pathetic little lives. Not you guys, though. You're cool. Now.

Maggie

Stephanie: You're one of the Seattle Grace five.
Arizona: I survived a plane crash. A big deal.
Stephanie: And a car crash. And a shooting. You might be immortal.
