Modern Family Season 9 Episode 19 Review: CHiPs and Salsa

at .  Updated at .

On Modern Family Season 9 Episode 19, Mitch gets Cam the police ride-along he's always dreamed of, while Hayley tries to convince Gloria to sell her salsa.

Let's start with Phil and Claire because they're on an upswing in their relationship, and I'm excited about it.

This season started out with Claire picking on Phil more than usual and lacked the sweet moments that I've come to love and expect from these two.

The last couple of episodes, though, things have been turning around in their marriage, and we're seeing a lot more sweet and honest moments between Phil and Claire.

Yes, they start off lying to each other and, yes, that's annoying. It always has been. But, when they finally break down and are just honest with each other, they click again and all is well in the Dunphy house.

Mitch: It is a lot less money though.
Cam: Well, you know, we don't have to decide today.

I had doubts about the two adjusting to their empty nest, but it looks like they're finding their stride. They still have parental issues to address, but I can see them bonding as a couple again and being those cute grandparents who dote over their grandkids.

If Modern Family lasts until the Dunphy kids have kids, Phil and Claire will shine, and Phil's dad will be the best great-grandpa ever! He needs to make an appearance. It's been a while.

Speaking of couples, Jay and Gloria are still off. They have been all season. Also, who is raising little Joe? Tell me. Please! Maybe he and Manny ran away together since Gloria and Jay are so far removed from parenthood these days. After all, Manny practically raised himself, so he'd do a fine job with Joe.

You'll get a donut when I get answers, you piece of trash.

Cam

Back to Jay and Gloria. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Gloria's sauce was highly successful! I seem to remember her sauce in the grocery store battling it out with Auntie Alice. She also got a huge order to be part of a basket when she was partnered up with Cam, so how was her sauce a failure?

The syncing up of the storyline about Gloria's sauce is off. When did it fail? It didn't.

Nothing drives me crazier than a show that insults its viewers, its fans! All of us know that Gloria's sauce has been a huge success, so it doesn't make sense to say all of a sudden that it's a failure.

This sauce was so important to Gloria and her heritage and her childhood in several episodes, so for her to turn around and say how much she wanted to sell it infuriates me because it doesn't make sense.

Phil

Surely there's more they can do with Jay and Gloria. I know! How about they show Jay and Gloria parent Joe and do family things together?

I've been saying this for ages. They really have to get back on a good track with this couple and this family. I know it's modern, but where's the family part?

Gloria's Salsa - Modern Family

I like Mira Sorvino, and her character is oddly funny, but Hayley was so much better suited in the fashion industry. It suited her personality and she had swagger there. She should design her own fashion line and open her own business because this job choice of hers isn't going anywhere and doesn't fit her personality.

Mitch and Cam were a disappointment again, which is sad because, out of all the characters, those two used to make me laugh.

It was good to see Mitch excited and energized about something, but it didn't make sense that he wouldn't have talked to Cam about his job offer. They're married!

They bonded over Lily on Modern Family Season 9 Episode 18, but they've fallen back off the horse, and I'm back to believing their marriage is in trouble.

You blew it you dummy. I wanted to sell the stupid sauce.

Gloria

Double-character couch interviews are still missing! Single characters only, and the show is really missing an opportunity here. Bring back the banter on the couch.

I'm starting a petition.

I don't know if it's because Modern Family has been on for so long that the storylines are all burning out and falling flat or if this is just an awkward season because of the ages of the kids, but I'm worried.

If they don't find their groove and find it fast, Modern Family may lose viewers and be on its way out.

I would hate to see the show come to an end. It has been one of the few comedies that have made me laugh out loud for real, and we need more of those, not less.

What do you think of the current trend of Modern Family? Are you worried it's on its way down and out? Who is your favorite couple now?
