All American Season 1 Episode 7 Review: California Love

It's Homecoming weekend on All American Season 1 Episode 7 and let's just say, it was one eventful dance.

Secrets were flying, hormones were raging, and there were even a few deep heart-to-heart moments.

Let's dissect!

First of all, why is the dance before the game? It's been a while since I was in high school, but the game was on Friday night and the dance on Saturday. Maybe some schools hold their dance first now, but that seems like a terrible idea.

Second of all, who waits until the weekend of Homecoming to ask someone to the dance? That pizza thing was cute I guess, but it was way too late.

Now on to the important stuff.

The theory that Spencer and Layla may embark on a secret relationship didn't pan out, and that was the right call. There are enough secrets as it is, and that would have been one too many.

It's a complicated situation that would only have been made more complicated if they tried to sneak around behind Asher and Olivia's back.

Asher is the ass in all of this, but it's also hard not to feel a little sorry for him. It wasn't exactly a great move by Layla to break up with him in the middle of the dance, and then immediately proceed to dance with Spencer right in front of him.

I'm not defending Asher, but as Olivia said, none of them are perfect.

Olivia: You are such a hypocrite. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you messed around with Spencer knowing how I felt about him, knowing that you had a boyfriend.
Layla: That is not the same.
Olivia: No, you're right, it's not. I was messed up on drugs when I slept with Asher, what's your excuse? Maybe now you can finally admit that you're not Miss Perfect after all, but you're a messy human who screws up like the rest of us.

Did you find yourself picking sides between Olivia and Layla?

It's hard to say if one is more right than the other. Layla has a right to feel betrayed. Olivia kept her secret a long time, and had plenty of opportunities to come clean once they began repairing their friendship.

Also, isn't one of the steps to becoming sober supposed to be to ask for forgiveness? While Olivia's reasoning was that she didn't want to hurt Layla, and that came from her heart, it's always better to be the one to tell a secret rather than risk it coming out in the way this one did.

As for Layla, she wasn't exactly innocent either.

She kissed Spencer knowing full well how Olivia felt about him, not to mention while she was still dating Asher.

It would be interesting to know if Layla would have eventually told Olivia about the kiss if Olivia hadn't admitted she saw it. Unfortunately, we'll never know.

Hopefully, the fact that both of them made mistakes will mean that they are able to forgive each other and be friends again. Olivia really did have Layla's feelings at heart when she chose not to tell her. I think Layla will realize that.

For now, I'm much more concerned about this football game.

They're down their star wide receiver after Asher was deservedly suspended for two games. Spencer will probably end up playing both sides of the ball again.

The real concern is Jordan. Can we just take a moment to roll our eyes at how stupid Jordan is acting?

Asher and Olivia - All American Season 1 Episode 7

Not only is he sleeping with the enemy, but he's allowing her to influence him with sex and drugs the night before the big game. It's super obvious this girl doesn't actually like him and is just trying to get him messed up so he blows the game right?

It's obvious to everyone except Jordan anyway.

He is going to show up late, hung over, and exhausted and not be able to throw worth a damn. I have a bad feeling this game is going to be a disaster for Beverly High.

Coach Baker's job could be riding on this too.

Grace: You always had a love/hate relationship with Crenshaw.
Billy: Not the place. Not the place. I was just tired of the responsibility that came with being a black man in the hood. I always had to be better than great. It felt like if I messed up, then the whole hood messed up. That was a lot to carry.

Are we supposed to make anything of the deep conversation between Billy and Grace when they were locked in his office? Maybe I'm optimistic, but I'm leaning towards no. These two have a history, and that will always be between them, but it's clear Billy loves Laura and his relationship with Grace is in the past.

It needs to stay there. The last thing this show needs is more relationship drama.

I do appreciate the two of them developing a friendship, especially since they're sort of co-parenting Spencer. It's refreshing that there is no jealousy or animosity between Laura and Gwen. This is how mature adults are supposed to behave, please don't mess it up.

As nervous as I am about the game, I'm extremely concerned about Coop.

Dance Partners - All American Season 1 Episode 7

She and Shawn are supposed to be finding a way out of the gang life, but instead, they're digging themselves into a deeper hole.

The deeper it goes, the harder it will be for them to climb back out.

Shawn is no longer the bad guy, that title now belongs to Tyronne. They need to figure out a way to get out from under him before it's too late.

Coop is scared, and she should be. I honestly have no idea how this is all going to end, but it wouldn't surprise me if Shawn winds up dead protecting her.

I'm so glad that Spencer called Coop for advice about Layla and they didn't let Shawn ruin their close friendship. Their relationship is one of the most important aspects of the series and it wouldn't work if they were at odds with one another for too long.

As much as Coop is determined to keep Spencer and his family out of harm's way, I fear it's only a matter of time before Spencer is involved.

What do you guys think? Are you happy that Spencer and Layla are together? Are they going to blow the big game? How worried are you for Coop?

All American Season 1 Episode 7 Quotes

Olivia: People keep a secret like that for one of two reasons. Either the cheating was a big mistake, and they just want to protect the person they love from being hurt.
Layla: Or?
Olivia: Or they're just trying to protect themselves. You have to decide which one is true for you and what you plan to do about it.

Spencer: Look, I'm just going to come right out and say it. I like you, in case that wasn't obvious. Based on that kiss, I'm guessing you don't find me completely intolerable.
Layla: It's a little more complicated than us just liking each other.
Spencer: I know, Asher is my teammate.
Layla: And my boyfriend.
