Even in a multicultural society, hate can raise its ugly head.

That was a point hammered home on Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 14.

When a president gets elected by putting down minorities of all types, no one should be surprised when that message is espoused by the villains in our entertainment.

That's not leftist. That's simply humanist. 

Flippa's murdered friend Luka was battling against one form of prejudice, counseling those in the LBGTQ community.

He originally seemed to be a creep hitting on a young girl, but he was actually trying to help her escape from conversion therapy.

Annie's religious parents considered her broken since she was exploring her sexuality and checked her into a credible program to "straighten her out."

Since this was damn close to kidnapping and child abuse, their efforts didn't go over well with Five-0, especially Grover.

But it turned out that Luka was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a Neo-Nazi carjacking his van to use in his glorious mission.

It was something of a copout to bring up the fact that mental illness runs in Connor's family.

That way, it can be said that he just wasn't in his right mind.

Connor's prison mate Barton didn't have that excuse, as he was the one who indoctrinated Connor in the Neo-Nazi belief.

Since he was already in prison, all that could be done is to make sure he never got out again.

Once the squad figured out that Barton was Connor's mentor, he really let loose, insulting Grover and calling McGarrett essentially a race traitor.

Growing up in Hawaii and serving in the military, Steve was never going to think the way Barton did.

I was surprised they didn't go more over the edge about Barton's hate speech.

Shouldn't someone have become aware of what Connor was up to? Granted, his mother just let him stay in his locked room, so apparently, he came and went as he pleased.

This was a very good episode for Jerry. His computer skills kept them almost caught up with Connor.

He even kicked open a door, which I would never have expected when he first came on the scene back on Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Episode 3.

Hearkening back to his conspiracy-nut days, it's hard to believe the strides Jerry has made.

Although we don't get near enough of him, his skills have made him an integral part of the task force. While Junior and Tani are comfortable with computers, Jerry is the man.

Still, Jerry has things to learn. For example, if you're pursuing a bomber, make sure he hasn't rigged his computer to explode before you grab it.

That didn't slow Jerry down, but that could have been bad news.

Having recruited HPD to help up with the search for Connor, it did seem to take longer than it should have to locate him.

Granted, he appeared to be getting help from local Neo-Nazis, but he had his own workspace and was able to switch out vans so that he could deliver his bomb to the community center.

But Connor was found just in time, for Steve to wrestle him down and Grover to shoot him.

All's well that ends well, although you have to wonder how large a group of Neo-Nazis there was in Hawaii.

This case had a special impact on Grover.

I guess he thought he'd left that prejudice behind when he moved to Hawaii.

It soon became clear that it was more than that, with Grover a ticking bomb throughout.

Fortunately, he was able to stay under control despite the hatred spewing out of Barton's mouth.

Finally, he told McGarrett the whole story about how he had been beaten up by rednecks in rural Illinois for daring to question the racist remarks they were making.

He was still reminded of that day by an injured finger which flares up every time it rains.

At least there was a kum ba yah moment at the end when Flippa's bandmates and Annie remembered Luka for the ways he made the world better.

With a multi-racial group raising their lights high, it illustrated Hawaii as it should be, emphasizing that the hate of Annie's parents, Barton and Connor was very much a minority.
