Killjoys Season 5 Episode 5 Review: A Bout, A Girl

at .

This season so far has been stuffed with Killjoys' schemes that have fallen apart.

This time out, they were going to take over the supermax ship on which they were imprisoned by winning its annual fighting championship on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 5.

The only problem was that they were collaborating with other prisoners who were as untrustworthy as you might have expected.

Entering the Fight - Killjoys

After all these years as Killjoys, how could they possibly have been surprised by such behavior?

And yet they were.

New Deal - Killjoys Season 5 Episode 5

Dutch's decision on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4 to stay inside the supermax seemed sound. They were somewhat protected from The Lady's influence inside, at least more than they were in Old Town.

Still, they were Killjoys in a prison surrounded by hundred of criminals, at least some of whom they put there.

So prison could hardly be considered an ideal base of operations.

Be that as it may, their location was hardly their biggest problem.

Dutch broke things down into simple steps: Take over the prison, free the people of Westerley, then take the fight to The Lady.

D'avin correctly pointed out the flaw in this plan: How were the three of them going to overcome the warden, her guards, and all those hundreds of prisoners?

Fortunately, an opportunity fell right into their lap, in the form of the Bellaxion, kind of a UFC for prisoners with the prize of a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Or, as Dutch so aptly described it to the warden, cockfighting for humans.

The Bellaxion was a win-win situation (unless you were a prisoner). The Q'reshi nobles choose new security personnel from the better fighters while the warden gets much-needed funding for the prison.

The Killjoys should have seen the writing on the wall when D'av, who had a history of competing in prison fighting, didn't get selected as a contestant.

But Johnny, aided by Nucy, had come up with an angle. If he could get ahold of one security chip, then he could override them all from the prison's mainframe.

This meant they had to find a way into the tournament, to extract such a chip while it was deactivated during the fight.

Ready to challenge one of the contestants, D'av instead got frog-marched to the chamber of Q'reshi Evie, who wanted him to assassinate her brother Silas before he killed her.

That left Dutch to beat up the side of beef that was training nearby. Silas was impressed enough to overrule the warden and demand that Dutch become a contestant.

While Dutch was getting into the tournament, Johnny was implementing his plan to get onto the warden's computer by planting a virus increasing the size of food portions.

The Killjoys also had to deal with intrateam dynamics.

Both Dutch and D'av were concerned about Johnny's frame of mind after his fantasy marriage to Dutch dissolved with their return to reality.

When Dutch broached the subject with him, he tried to laugh it off and then left with the matter unresolved.

Meanwhile, Johnny was learning to bond with his new Lucy, Nucy, whose personality was still forming. It should be enjoyable to watch Nucy evolve over the remainder of the season.

Dutch quickly blew through her opponents in the Bellaxion, procuring a chip with a bite in her first fight. There was a noticeable difference between a master assassin and musclebound thugs.

The warden was impressed enough to bring Dutch in for a private talk and to agree to a deal that she would like Johnny go free if Dutch won.

Unfortunately, the warden caught Johnny with his hands in her mainframe and sent him off to solitary, before he could retrieve Nucy.

Simultaneously, she pulled Dutch from the tournament, annulling their deal.

So the Killjoys had to cash in their favor with Sparlow to get him to bust Johnny out of solitary.

In the end, they got doublecrossed. Johnny unknowingly freed the men of both Sparlow and Corin Jeers, who set aside their differences to take over the prison ship.

D'av and Dutch remained imprisoned, but Johnny and the warden joined up and were free, which should prove an interesting pairing.

Back in Old Town, The Lady took to the streets, forcing Khlyen to try to locate Pree for her, as she searched for those residents who had broken free of her control.

Going to the Royale, Pree's old haunt, seemed like a good place to find him. But Pree knew better than to stick out his neck.

Khlyen continued to attempt to educate The Lady about human emotions but she was just too arrogant to listen to him.

Khlyen did get Gared to run then killed time interrogating that harmless doofus who knew nothing. He also tried to bring Gared back to reality.

The Lady did catch on that Khlyen was stalling and still hoped to find some way to rescue Dutch. So it's difficult to say how much more he can do to help the Killjoys.

We finally got to see Delle Seyah Kendry and Jaq again for the first time since Killjoys Season 5 Episode 1.

They were searching for a cube that Jaq had been seeing in a vision.

When Jaq saw D'av in trouble in a vision, he wanted to run off and rescue him. Delle Seyah responded by lecturing him about hidden danger and duty, which wasn't what he wanted to hear.

It's natural that Jaq, being younger than he appears, would be confused by the adults in his life, especially Kendry and Aneela.

But they got where they needed to be after their spat, with Jaq finding the Hullen cube.

And what a surprise to have Aneela step out when he opened the cube with Dutch's DNA. Aneela is bound to play a role in The Lady's eventual defeat.

Next episode figures to be the end of the Killjoys' prison stay, with Johnny playing a role in quelling the prisoner uprising.

What did you think of Sparlow's double-cross?

Can Khlyen still fool The Lady?

Where you surprised by Aneela's reappearance?
