Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Ship Outta Luck

at .

Let's have a prison drama for a while. Why not?

Dutch, Johnny, and D'avin woke up in an inescapable supermax peniteniary on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4.

Prison isn't a good place for bounty hunters to be. And it appears it's going to take a while before they're running the place.

Fortunately, they are getting help on the outside in the effort to save Westerly from The Lady.

They're going to need it because they are figuratively going to be tied up for a while.

In the Loony Bin - Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4

The Lady placed the Killjoys inside Herks Supermax purely as bait, hoping Jaq will come to save them.

Like Delle Sayeh couldn't see that obvious trap.

A better strategy will be just to let the Killjoys scheme their way out. If they hadn't been on a prison ship, they would have escaped already.

As things stand, they've already shown the warden of what they're capable.

They didn't get there instantly, as they didn't necessarily make great first impressions.

Dutch tried to break free in a prisoner lineup surrounded by guards and ended up in solitary for her efforts.

That couldn't have been part of the plan. That's Dutch, though, fight first, strategize later.

Meanwhile, Johnny and D'avin got sent to the warden's office, with Johnny bullshitting about his skill sets and D'av warning about The Lady's attempted takeover of the J. Neither got anywhere with the warden, who had heard everything before.

Johnny got put on laundry duty, which fit his needs well, as such a prisoner became practically invisible and can go everywhere.

The warden thought D'av was raving so she sent him to the loony bin, where he met Calvert, a psych-ward veteran.

In short order, Johnny had stolen a guard's monitor and used its parts to rebuild Lucy, although "Nucy's" personality needs to grow further.

He slipped a spoon to Dutch, which was all she needed to break out of solitary. Johnny was right there to give her a ride in a laundry cart.

I still have no idea why Johnny got electroshock applied to D'av, unless he just wanted the parts from that setup.

Sadly, their effort was all for naught, as they were out in space, not underground.

And why was anyone surprised that prisoners had been implanted with tracking chips? Why didn't super-hacker Johnny consider that possibility?

But their escape effort impressed the warden enough that she decided to use them rather than killing two out of three.

She needed to investigate a threatened hit on Sparlow, the inmate who ran things inside. In exchange for finding out who ordered the assassin, she would move the Killjoys to better accommodations within the prison.

The warden transferred them to the worst area of the prison, where Sparlow ruled.

Unfortunately, just when Dutch was connecting with Sparlow over an apple, the Killjoys' cover was blown by Coren Jeers, whom they captured way back on Killjoys Season 1 Episode 1. Riot protocol was enacted, and everyone was zapped unconscious.

Still, Dutch was able to convince the warden that they could stop the assassination attempt and discover who was behind it.

This they did, as Sparlow's bodyguards dropped after psych drugs were placed in their slop by Calvert, who was the hitwoman.

Why did it take all three Killjoys to take her out and save Sparlow? It's hard to say, but eventually they got their act together and knocked out Calvert.

But they did get two things out of the experience. One was the protection of Sparlow -- something Killjoys need in prison.

The other was they found out that Coren was behind the assassination, trying to take over for Sparlow.

Allies Reconnect - Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4

Was Dutch right to stay squirreled away in X Wing trying to come up with a more solid strategy to tackle The Lady? Based on their past results, yes.

Besides, developments elsewhere may very well be beneficial for the Killjoys.

The larger of those is that the number of freed minds had been doubled, thanks to Zephyr.

First, in a hilarious reunion, she freed Turin, the "angry Killjoy," from The Lady's world.

Then he brought Pree back into the fold, and it was great to have sarcastic Pree back in all his glory.

It was a joy to watch Turin and Pree snark back and forth at each other.

Back to Reality - Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4

They all agreed not to release any other citizens yet, so they could continue to work surreptitiously. That mean, unfortunately, Gared stayed blissfully ignorant.

One oddity that Pree remembered from his time as local RAC chief was a bare spot in surveillance outside of Old Town.

Zeph and Turin found a squadron of Black Root ships there that were being used to seed the clouds to "brainwash" the local citizenry, to use Zeph's phrase.

Zeph was able to get a sample of the chemicals used to seed the clouds so that she could develop a counter-agent.

Then she and Turin proceeded to blow up a third of The Lady's fleet, which sent her into a rage.

The Lady's main weakness appears to be that, because of the body she is inhabiting, she's becoming more and more human and reacting accordingly.

Recruiting Help - Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4

Also, as Khlyen pointed out, she doesn't understand humanity, even though she plans to install human emotions in the hatchlings she is growing. She'll likely get more mixed results than she expects.

Khlyen, who I think is still on the side of humanity, is just stalling and waiting for The Lady's plans to collapse.

Of course, the Killjoys and their allies will do everything they can to help that happen.

Did you think the Killjoys would have escaped by now?

How important is Zephyr's work?

Is The Lady starting to lose it?
