The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5 Review: Norman Devane

Repulsive is an understatement.

While The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5 was full of repulsive imagery, there were some interesting tidbits thrown our way about Red and even the good cowboy, Ressler.

The issue of Red's identity didn't come up this hour, but the almost-forgotten issue of his medical problem did.

Red Takes a Prisoner - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

Whatever disease Red has, he's not finding any luck with a cure.

It's unclear if the disease is cancer, but there were strong hints that might be what it is.

And when Ressler discovered Red's thick medical file, you have to hand it to him for not taking a peek.

The funniest part (well, there were two) was when Red told that guy (can't remember his name) that Ressler was a dirty cop.

Agent Ressler is as crooked as a crooked man's hat.

Red

Even funnier, and before that, was when Ressler told Red he always wanted to use Red's, "This is going to be a gas!" line -- which he readily did.

Humor is not something Ressler is known for and nothing that he's ever done has been humorous, so this was a first.

Ressler Amazed - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

Red asked Ressler not to divulge any information to Liz and while Ressler may have told Harold about Red killing Devane, he'll honor Red's request regarding Liz.

Even though it hasn't been touched on for a while, Ressler still has feelings for Liz, and he realizes that what Red said about not worrying her was true.

The dynamic between Red and Ressler is always fascinating.

Ressler has a love/hate relationship with Red. On the one hand, it irritates him that his beloved FBI is hiding and using Red and that Red, in turn, is using the FBI to do his bidding.

On the other hand, Ressler, even though he'll never admit it, has a begrudging respect for Red -- and a lot of that is from what Red did after his fiancee was killed seasons ago.

If you think about it, Ressler may even wish he was Red -- or at least had the balls Red does.

A Danger for Red - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

Either way, Red seems to have an affinity for Ressler. Just the fact that he allowed Ressler into his secret den was enough to show that.

But when Red shot Devane right in front of Ressler with nary a thought, it went a step further.

Even if Ressler is a dirty cop -- and that's debatable, but who knows the true story -- Red is never careless.

Taking Care of Business - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

And he trusted Ressler enough that he didn't feel abruptly killing Devane was going to be an issue.

It'll be interesting to see if The Blacklist ever digs deeper into the history of Red and Ressler beyond what we already know.

In between all the drama of Ned Devane, and we'll touch on the specific case briefly in a moment, Red had a friend (the guy I can't remember) searching for Katarina.

It blows my mind that with all of Red's resources that everyone around him is clueless as to Katarina's location.

It's laughable that Red wouldn't already know she's holed up next to Liz.

Why this issue is continuing is beyond me -- and it's almost aggravating because of the absurdity of it.

A Sick Kid - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

There is no way in hell that Katarina can be that sly -- and Red so clueless -- about where she's currently living.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

It's understandable why this storyline is dragging out, but -- and this is a big but -- it doesn't fit with Red's character.

If Red could find Katarina in Paris after many years of not being in contact with her, he should be able to figure out the woman is right under his nose.

He Gets Nervous - The Blacklist

And not only that but also that she's too close to comfort to his beloved Liz.

Liz being stupid, is one thing. Red being stupid is outrageous.

So, this storyline needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. It isn't something that should be dragged out to the end of the season.

Even Liz talking about her mother -- again -- was enough to make me want to tune out.

In addition, Aram's affair with Elodie is bizarre. His first interaction with her was believable.

Now, he's in love with her? C'mon.

It wasn't just a ruse for him to get more information for the case, he genuinely has a thing for her.

Making a Deal - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

And for a guy to return to his bumbling, awkward self when talking to her on the phone didn't make sense.

If he had enough balls to involve himself in a relationship with a married woman, he shouldn't have too much trouble calling her back after not talking to her for two weeks.

And for Liz to congratulate him on this illicit relationship was totally Liz because she's the queen of illicit relationships, right?

She shouldn't be giving romantic advice to anyone.

Red Takes Charge - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 5

As far as the case, it was gross.

Those poor kids didn't have a chance, and it was all Red's fault.

If I'm not mistaken, Devane was testing them to help find a cure for whatever is ailing Red.

Sure, the guy was a terrorist in his own right, but what he was doing was for Red's benefit.

And for him to be the extreme germophobe he was and working in a school environment was funny.

At least he met his maker now.

Over to you!

What did you thnk of "Norman Devane"?

Is Red's ignorance regarding Katrina as bothersome to you as it is to me?

Should Liz be giving romantic advice to anyone?

Do you like Aram's new romantic storyline?

What's the history between Red and Ressler?
