The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1 Review: Louis T. Steinhil

at .

Welcome back to another season of intrigue.

And The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1 was full of it, don't you think?

There are more questions now than there ever were.

In Trouble Again - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

It also seems we're going back to the old "who is Red" question. Around and around we go, right?

Katarina's sudden interest in Red is curious. What could he possibly know that would cause her to go through such a ruse?

She's had to have known where he was and that he's been working for the FBI; so why now? She's obviously powerful enough to have known that already.

But now she's literally draining him to find out everything he knows.

Bad News - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

Harold is thick in the mix, as well. Whoever Harold and Red know is the person Katarina wants to know about even if she doesn't know who it is.

It's unclear if Daniel Hutton is the person in question, but what is clear is that Harold doesn't believe that Red isn't really Red.

So, the circle of mystery remains.

This is going to be a crazy thought, but there was a lot of talk about "illusion."

Dembe on the Hunt - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

Red mentioned that Katarina was an illusion. He even denied her existence.

What was most intriguing, though, is when he said he'd never betray her because doing so would be betraying himself.

So, could this possibly mean that Red is Katarina and Katarina is Red? And the Red that Harold knows isn't the "real" Red at all, but Katarina in disguise?

The whole idea is wild, but there's no doubt it's being dangled in our faces.

The question of who Red seems like it should be frustrating by now, but the way it's framed is intriguing enough to keep us on edge.

Harold Wants Answers - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

However, if it becomes a five-season ordeal like the who's the daddy question, it will no longer be fun. The Harold angle is fresh.

Liz coming around to Red's side (again) is a relief in that we don't have to have another season of her trying to fight the "truth" whatever it may be.

Her being at odds with Red and putting him in jail was never a good storyline to pursue from the beginning. It upset fans and even drew a lot of hate for Liz..

Now, that the team knows about her deception, it's an issue that can and should fall to the wayside never to get revisited -- hopefully.

Detective Fake - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

She can keep her focus on being on Red's side. He's going to need her help in dealing with Katarina.

Going back to Katrina, a big question is why hasn't she even asked about Liz?

You'd think that would be her first question, but it doesn't seem to have even entered her mind, which is odd.

Red trusting her by not even telling Dembe who he was meeting with is even more strange.

There has to be a reason why they were meeting, but it's not clear who contacted who and why.

Again, I go back to the point of why Katarina waited so long if she had all these burning questions.

It's also odd that the only picture Liz has of her mother is the one where Katarina's face is blocked out by the reflection of the sun.

It was almost like an illusion similar to how Red rigged the radio to block out the camera in the fake hospital room.

So, there are layers of mystery being put into play which is going to make for a good season.

Paralyzed - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

Red doesn't appear to be in fear of Katarina, either. He understands she's dangerous, and he's not taking his situation lightly, but he also seems like he's up for the challenge.

He figured out the hospital room was a fake rather quickly and was able to maneuver his way out until he got caught again.

It had to be a relief for him finally to figure out he wasn't paralyzed. Out of everything that happened, that fear was real.

Ressler Understands - The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 1

Red will undoubtedly get himself out of his current predicament. And Katarina should know she can't keep Red contained. So, there might be a little bit of a cat and mouse game going on between them.

However it all plays out, it's going to be an interesting season for sure.
