The Ivy League is an athletic conference. The name carries connotations of academic excellence, but it is essentially a sports division of eight Northeastern schools. It would be silly to include California institutions such as Caltech and Stanford because they are too far away to compete against the other schools in sports. Furthermore, I don't think anyone can contest the contributions Columbia University has made to society. Unless you consider momentous discoveries in history such as the splitting of the first Uranium atom to be a "one-trick pony" kinda thing.

This is a fair, valid statement. The Ivy League is an elite clique, and means that it should be occupied with institutions that have made noteworthy contributions to the nation and world at large. To this point Harvard, Yale and Princeton have. The rest have made their respective marks of-course but they are in no way in the same league as the trifecta of Harvard, Yale or Princeton such as in terms of research, nobel laureates etc. This brings me to the point that the rest are their as maybe one-trick ponies such as sports at The University of Pennsylvania etc. So then, maybe these other institutions should rightly be stripped of being Ivy League. A thorough re-examination should be done and maybe much more deserving places such as MIT, Stanford, CalTech should be included.
