Lord Grantham receives some awful news from the front line this week as both William and Matthew are gravely injured. Violet ensures that not only William will be brought to Downton Abbey, but Matthew as well. She has strings and she pulls them.

Mrs. Bates rears her ugly head and Mary goes to Mr. Carlisle to ask his assistance in keeping their sordid story from ever being published. He obliges and announces their engagement, but Mr. Bates may still be under attack.

Daisy and William get married despite her concerns that she is untrue. He wants his love to benefit from his impending death. The entire house attends their wedding, including Violet.

William learns he is paralyzed and will never be with a woman again and breaks his engagement with Lavinia.

A new maid is hired, one in circumstances quite similar to Ethel's, but Ethel is not the one who benefits.
