Recap

Rita's rap sheet is revealed in the opening monologue. But now, she's in jail for a crime she didn't commit.

Her lawyer decides they'll pin the murder on Isabel. After all, murder trials are about stories, and he knows how to craft them.

Even though it means shoving her cousin under the bus, she considers doing it anyway.

Alma looks spectacular as she chats with Mrs. Yost, telling her how she's learned that crushing one's enemies is the best cosmetic. When Mrs. Yost talks back, it's actually Grace with the good news. Rita is out of the garden club, and Alma is in!

Alma tut-tuts over the grave, asking Mrs. Yost to roll in it.

Catherine has brought her butler, Otto, from home, and Scooter doesn't do much to impress the man.

Catherine is hoping to find evidence of Rita's lover by going through her things. When she leaves, she drops a bit of a bombshell on Scooter. He'll be packing his bags before he knows it.

Alma shares her good news with Bertram, but he has been thinking about Rita. They argue.

Dee steps outside to discover Rocco digging in the flower bed again, just moments before Vern's detective friend steps up to Mrs. Yost's house. He's there to meet with her nephew about her disappearance, which surprises Dee. She bought into her mom's story about the trip.

She learns that Mrs. Yost's car was found submerged in a lake up north as Rocco's hole grows ever larger.

Isabel is at Vern's with information on the murder. She wants him to deliver a message that she wants 20 gs to reveal it and free Rita. She does reveal that the evidence was in his photos, but nothing more.

Dee tells Alma what she heard, and Dee can't believe her mom never told her. Alma tries to pull her attention from it with the supposition that she could be a member of the garden club. Alma waxes poetic about her drab life that has taken flight, and it doesn't do anything to make Dee feel better.

The ladies gather, talking shit about Rita while asking Alma to speak. Of course, she's already written a speech. She speaks of trying times and is on point when Isabel rings the bell with an urgent matter. Isabel is there to share the photo with her.

Isabel wants 20k to stay quiet. In cash.

Catherine needs Scooter's help in the search for Rita's lover, and Scooter knows just where to look. Behind Carlo's painting, there is a hole in the wall with all of the evidence. Scooter removes it lovingly.

Catherine asks Otto to go downstairs to see what's keeping Scooter, and Otto finds the evidence burning.

Rita is pacing her cell, considering whether or not to finger Isabel. Rita's arm is in a sling, seemingly from Harry beating her around. He pushes Isabel to the ground when Isabel tried to jump him. As he gets ready to beat Rita again, Isabel shoots him in the back.

Bertram is freaking out at the trouble that Alma has gotten them into. Alma's suggestion? They can stop Isabel permanently. That sends him from their room to sleep in the guest room. He'll return to their bed when she's a little less lethal.

Dee visits Mrs. Yost's nephew, learning that she's also been robbed. Whoever robbed her likely also killed her. Dee hears all she needs to know to suspect her parents since that fancy French pitcher is hanging in her living room and the other missing items adorn the place.

Vern visits the mansion to see Catherine. Scooter greets him, sharing the feelings he and Catherine now share.

Before leaving, Vern asks a favor of Scooter. Forget about Dee. And before he makes his full exit, Otto gets Scooter's old address from Vern.

Alma comes up with a way to get the $20 grand. When she says that selling Mrs. Yost's things would solve their problems, Bertram cannot believe that she wants to commit one crime to cover another.

Dee needs answers about Mrs. Yost. Bertram throws Alma under the bus. Alma is left explaining that she borrowed some of Mrs. Yost's items to impress the Garden Club. Dee doesn't even care. As soon as Mrs. Yost's nephew leaves, Dee is returning her things.

Rita is still remembering the good times she had with Isabel, who always took care of her. She was working in a brothel when Isabel arranged for her to meet Carlo, who might sweep her away from all of that.

Catherine bribes the manager of Scooter's old apartment to discover he was Rita's lover. She's bereft.

Dee springs into action when the nephew leaves. When she's leaving from the house, Irving returns. He forgot his wallet. She says she's looking for Rocco. Dee is shocked that Mrs. Yost's sister is dead. She can hardly stand it.

Irving sees the closet door is open, and spies out the window to see Dee going inside. Uh oh.

Vern calls Isabel. He knows what's going on and wants to go to Rita with Isabel's plans. He's begging her to do right by Rita by sharing the photo with him. She acquiesces. She wants to get her money before turning over the photo.

Alma visits Bertram at his office. She's been doing some thinking and realizes she made a total mess of things. She's so sorry. Bertram has emptied their accounts and borrowed money from an old school chum to make up the rest.

Alma knows they'll get over this last hurdle. She's not worried. She tells Bertram how much she loves him, touching his face softly. She has taken a bottle of his poison.

Catherine and Scooter are having a throw-down while Otto sits outside drinking a martini. Scooter admits he was playing a part. She's everything that Rita isn't, though. Warm, loving, and kind, while Rita can be kind of mean.

She wants him to testify against Rita to prove his love for her. In return, she'll take such good care of him.

Otto needs another drink.

After looking at the question of whether Isabel ever committed a crime over and over again, Rita moves on to another. Why would Isabel hate her?

There is a flashback to the day that Isabel arrived at the mansion. Carlo set certain conditions for Isabel to stay with them. She needs to be their maid. Rita wants her to do it until Carlo dies. Once he's gone, they'll be free, and Rita can finally take care of Isabel like Isabel took care of her.

Isabel is writing a postcard when Alma and Bertram arrive. He wants the photo and the negative, but Isabel wants to count the money first.

Isabel decides to keep the money and the photo in case Rita needs it. In response, Alma plunges the needle into Isabel's neck. Alma and Bertram argue while Isabel dies. He's so angry. Isabel died in fear and pain, no sedative. No tenderness. Alma doesn't care. Isabel was blackmailing them. Bertram orders her to the car so that he can say goodbye to Isabel properly. Alma says she doesn't understand, and Bertram knows that she never had.

He also spies the postcard on the table, and he uses it to pen a suicide note to get them out of trouble.

They drive off just seconds before Vern arrives. He finds her dead on the bed, the note beside her. It's a confession. She killed Carlo.

Rita will not throw Isabel under the bus. He's got news of Alma's suicide. She cannot believe it. Rita is shocked.

Dee is taking notes about the clues in Mrs. Yost's disappearance when Rocco needs to go outside. She helps Rocco get a bone in the garden. If course, it's Mrs. Yost, and her face looks quite good. Dee's entire world is rocked as she looks around the neighborhood to see who might have witnessed her actions.

Instead of confronting her parents, Dee runs upstairs to call Vern. She wants to get married right now. She needs to elope. She can't explain it, but she needs to get out of this house. She packs a bag, and with one look back, leaves the house.
