How to Get Away with Murder Season 2 Episode 15 Review: Anna Mae

at .  Updated at .

By this show's standards, that was a pretty subdued finale.

Not to say that How to Get Away with Murder Season 2 Episode 15 wasn't strong, because it was, but it moved at a much slower pace then we're used to. It was very character driven, choosing this final episode of the season to bring back the phenomenal Cicely Tyson and show us yet another layer of Annalise Keating.

Those expecting a flashy, edge of your seat installment may have been disappointed for the most part, until those final few minutes that is.

The Pressure Mounts - How to Get Away with Murder

The past few weeks have given us pretty much equal parts flashbacks and present day drama. And tonight stuck with those two paths, except present day was split between Philadelphia and Memphis.

Annalise Anna Mae went home to Memphis to get away from her life and could you really blame her? Annalise has been through hell and back lately (you can debate about how much of it was her own doing another time) and when you feel like you have nowhere else to go, you go home.

Man it was wonderful to see Ophelia back, dishing out insults and advice at every turn. Annalise and her mother have a terribly complicated relationship, but when Analise needed to get away, there was only one person to turn to.

Annalise: I hate you.
Ophelia: Everybody love me.

The one person Annalise didn't really need to see was her father. I have to assume that this storyline will make its way into next season, because there was no real closure here. It's hard to be mad at either Annalise or Ophelia in this situation.

Annalise has every right to spurn the affections of the man who abandoned her, while Ophelia has every right to forgive him and seek comfort in his presence. I can't imagine this is the last we'll see of this storyline.

With Annalise down south, the team was scrambling back home, as they're wont to do whenever "Mommy" goes missing. These kids are so ridiculous and immature at times, I almost forget how smart they can actually be.

It didn't take them very long to find Annalise's arrest warrant (thanks Oliver!) and figure out that she was being set up. But who was setting her up?

I have to admit, a part of me thought it was Nate. I know, I know, he's met the parents now and him and Anna Mae seem to be in a full-fledged relationship, but wouldn't your jaw have hit the floor if you found out he was playing her this whole time?

I was crazy wrong, however, with the big bad of the season turning out to be Caleb Hapstall.

Caleb Hapstall is a serial killer.

Annalise

Poor Philip. He's the reason your elders always told you to never judge a book by its cover. Sure, he's a creepy looking dude who shows up at people's apartments and hides under beds like a goddamn monster, but he's innocent I tell you!

The real sicko was Caleb, who murdered his parents and his aunt and sat back and let anyone and everyone take the blame for it. I'm a little ambivalent towards this reveal because it's not exactly shocking, but it does give us some much needed closure. And Caleb's suicide really does bring us to the end of the Hapstall murder mystery.

Here's hoping Catherine and Philip move far, far way from Philadelphia and work on limiting their creepy behavior. Farewell, sibling/cousins.

Now Caleb's reveal as the mastermind behind a series of deaths was far from the biggest shocker of the night. That honor went to Frank instead.

Remember that random hookup from How To Get Away With Murder Season 2 Episode 14? Well, we learned Frank was coerced into bugging Annalise's room in exchange for a literal trunk full of cash. And said bugging led to Annalise's car accident and the death of her baby.

If you saw that one coming, then I applaud you. What a sick and frightening twist that brings to the show. We now know why Frank was obligated to kill Lila and we also know why he does whatever Annalise asks of him.

Frank does a lot of terrible things (like everyone on this show) but this one action has really changed the direction of his life. It's no surprise he decided to skip town by episode's end, as Annalise surely wants nothing to do with him and Laurel has broken his heart. Aside from Bonnie, what's left for him now?

If you thought the finale was just going to leave off with Frank's empty apartment, then you were mistaken. We got one more little shock to tide us over until next fall.

Mr. Mahoney: Can I help you? What?
Wes: I think I'm your son.
Mr. Mahoney: Why would you think that?
Wes: Annalise Keating.

And then boom! Mr. Mahoney is dead on a New York City sidewalk. And Wes made it through a season without killing anyone (barely).

It's been a great season people and I want to hear what you thought about it in the comments. What did you think about "Anna Mae"? What's next for Frank?

I want the good, the bad and the ugly from a pretty fantastic sophomore season. I'll see you back in the fall for another crazy ride.
