Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Estrategia De Entrada

at .

Teresa’s journey continued in Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 3 as she fought to be something other than disposable.

Teresa wants to be valuable because she’s seen what happens when you lose your value in this world; you end up a whore, a junkie or both.

And then you die.

A Test of Loyalty - Queen of the South

If I know too much, I'm dispensable. If I know too little, I’m disposable.

Teresa

In this world, even being a drug mule is a step up but Teresa’s showing that she has skills that go beyond swallowing bags and throwing them back up.

As impressive as that may have been, Camilla was quick to point out that even an animal will chew off it’s own limb in order to survive.

In other words, there’s a difference between desperation and determination and Teresa is determined, although at this point I wonder what her ultimate goal is or if she even has one.

It doesn’t seem to be to escape. If it were, she could have made a run for it at the airport in Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 2, or snitched to the DEA, because I don’t believe she had any clue those officers were fake.

Or she would have taken the Rolex and pawned it for the cash. Teresa wants more and despite James warning, she seems to believe she can get that if she proves herself to Camilla.

I was a little surprised when Teresa told James to let the thief go. That seemed naive after all she’s seen and been through, but Teresa isn’t a killer. She isn’t ruthless, but with Camilla’s tutelage, will she eventually learn to be?

Women in this business, we can not afford to look weak. Don't ever make that mistake again.

Camilla

What Teresa really wants is power, and Camilla has that, but at what price? She admitted that she’s given up her husband and has all but lost her daughter in order to run her business. Is it worth it?

We know that Teresa eventually gains her own power. I’m not sure why we’ve needed to see future Teresa, other than to remind us where she’s heading, but I’ve never felt as though the flash forwards were actually necessary.

I don’t need to know the destination to enjoy the journey.

But right now Teresa has nothing, and trying to venture out on her own will most likely get her killed. So in the meantime, she’s encouraging Brenda to run to her.

Brenda is the lone bit of humor in this otherwise bleak landscape. Even in her fear and desperation, she still manages to keep her snark as in this Queen of the South quote where Teresa tells her to get to Dallas…

I don't like gringos. The last time I checked there's a lot of gringos in Texas.

Brenda

Apparently, the American dream can be one of great prosperity or it can be a horror show, but with Guero and Chino gone and the cartel on their tail, what other choice do they have?

Brenda

The second that you become valuable to her, the second she takes an interest in you, it's going to be harder for you to get out. So be careful.
