Chicago PD Season 4 Episode 2 Review: Made a Wrong Turn

It turns out Chicago PD Season 4 Episode 2 is one of those episodes that feels trickier than it actually is. "Made A Wrong Turn" has its plot twists, but they're the plot twists you'd expect if you've watched this series long enough.
After the team finds a young man beaten near to death, Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) rush him to Chicago Med. With Nathan in the care of Chicago Med's Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), the race is on to locate his fiancee Sarah, who was nowhere to be found.
The fact that she's a young Caucasian woman missing from a predominantly African-American neighborhood only adds pressure to the situation, as does the fact that Nathan is nowhere near as innocent as he appeared.
Chicago already has enough of a PR nightmare.

In the end, Sarah is found to be in the clutches of Kenneth Waddell, a man so bad that not even the gangs want anything to do with him, and the residents of "The Gardens" give way so that the Intelligence Unit can find Waddell and literally shoot him in the back in order to free Sarah.
This isn't novel; we've seen plenty of shows where people mistrust the cops and get in the way of an investigation, only to eventually get out of the way when common decency is involved. Voight (Jason Beghe) also drops a big hint in the beginning of the episode when he tells his team to remember that not everyone in the neighborhood is against the police.
But while "Made A Wrong Turn" isn't an innovative case, it's entertaining enough. You're equally unsurprised to find out that Nathan may not have a criminal record but he's definitely made a wrong turn somewhere – yet that only makes you feel more for Sarah because she needs to have some serious words with her fiancee.
And watching Voight put the hurt on people who obstruct justice, whether it's making use of a police dog to scare a potential witness or intimidating the creep who has the video tape, never gets old. It's that willingness to get tough that has separated Chicago P.D. from other cop shows.
Elsewhere the partnership between Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Tay (guest star Li Jun Li) is in full bloom now, as Burgess confides in Tay that she's decided on celibacy and Tay teases Burgess about ex-fiancee Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).
But it's not all laughs as Commander Fogel is still ticked off at Platt (Amy Morton) for pulling strings to get Tay out of Fogel's purgatory, and gives her an ultimatum – send Tay back or get herself reassigned – in front of a half-dozen officers.
Burgess urges Tay to file a formal complaint against Fogel but Tay says she doesn't want "any more drama," and when Tay asks Platt if there's a problem Platt denies it. You can see where this is going and it's probably not going to work out well for Tay or Burgess.
It makes you wonder where Burgess's character is going to go in Season 4. She already lost her previous partner and boyfriend Sean Roman after actor Sean Geraghty decided to exit the show; the fact that Li Jun Li is billed as a guest star suggests that Tay isn't going to stick around either. So is Burgess going to be down two partners in short order?
On the personal front Lindsay is reticent to move in with Halstead, but that's just because she'd rather have him in her apartment instead of the other way around. That is incredibly anti-climactic; given how NBC included the line about her surprising him in the episode description, you'd expect something bigger. Well, at least it wasn't bad news.
I'm completely in love with you and you're the only person I can trust right now.

Meanwhile, Mouse (Samuel Hunt) wants to get back into the Army Rangers, which doesn't go over well with either Halstead or Voight. Especially because Mouse wants Voight to lie in order to help him be able to re-enlist.
Voight doesn't give him an answer, so we'll have to wait and see if we really are losing Mouse from the ensemble – especially since it's now come out that Jon Seda will be shifting from Chicago P.D. to Chicago Justice when the latter show launches at midseason.
"Made A Wrong Turn" probably isn't going to be an episode that has a tremendous amount of rewatch value. The two biggest developments are that Platt's neck is officially on the line for Tay, and that Mouse may be headed back to the Army.
And while it's an interesting scene to see Halstead unload a shotgun blast into the bad guy's back, the case isn't Chicago P.D.'s best either.
But hey, at least the show's major couple gave the episode a happy ending.
