Queen of the South Season 2 Episode 1 Review: El Cuerpo De Cristo

From a filthy mattress to 5-star hotel accommodations.

Teresa isn’t there yet, but we begin to see the start of her journey with Queen of the South Season 2 Episode 1

Queen of the South Season 2

And it’s hard to argue with some of the reasoning that gets her there.

Couture feels better than flannel.

Teresa

With every decision she makes, Teresa becomes more powerful and more confident, but she also loses a part of her soul.

But Teresa is less concerned with the eternal consequences and more interested in the immediate ones, and it’s easy to see why.

When Teresa’s life was turned upside down, she ended up sleeping in a warehouse and working as a drug mule in order to survive.

When Camila’s life took a similar turn, she ran to her safe house, a  beautiful, multi-million dollar, mansion with guns and cash, and people willing to help her climb back to the top.

It’s the difference between being powerless and powerful, and Teresa will never go back to the former. As she made clear to Camila in this Queen of the South quote

I'll fight 'till I die but I'm not running anymore.

Teresa

Teresa still had to prove herself to Camila, and she did that by brokering the deal with King George.

Instead of your typical lowlife, or rich drug dealer, King George was a complete nut job.

I didn’t know whether to laugh when I saw the gold plated gun and gold lamé Speedo, or cringe because his tongue would come out of his mouth every time he looked at Teresa.

The Gold Gun - Queen of the South Season 2 Episode 1

One of the things I love about Teresa is that she never uses her sexuality to solve a problem, especially when a gun will solve it much more expeditiously.

Nothing wrong with beauty when there's brains beneath it.

Teresa

With the murder of Rolando hanging on Teresa's conscience, it was almost a relief to see her crying over losing Brenda. I miss Brenda. I wonder if we’ll ever hear about her son again.

There's an old saying about success, that it's lonely at the top. I'm here to tell you that that's bullshit. I run an international drug empire and I have everyone and everything that I need. On the way up, even your worst enemies can become your best friends, and your best friends? Collateral damage.

Teresa

Brenda was definitely Teresa’s collateral damage, but will there be more? In that flash forward, was the lover Teresa shot Guero, James, or someone else?

Will we even find out during Queen of the South season 2?

Guero is Alive - Queen of the South Season 2 Episode 1

Of course, Teresa was only part of the story. The other half is the war between Camila and Epifanio.

I wasn’t clear on why Camila wouldn’t sign the divorce papers. Would Epifanio take everything if she had? Is she seen as more powerful being married to the governor? Is it a Catholic thing?  I’m really unsure.

You have bigger balls than any man I've ever known. One thing I don't doubt is your nerve. Divorce, or war. The choice is yours.

Epifanio

It’s a shame Epifanio insisted on keeping Camila under his thumb. If he’d been strong enough to allow her to take control of the business, they could have been quite the powerhouse couple.

Instead, they’re both left trying to survive the fallout.

And that brings us to Epifanio’s meeting with Batman about Colonel Cortez…

He was useful against Camila, but he thinks he still owns his teeth. Let's show him what we do to greedy, nipping dogs.

Epifanio

Oh, Cortez’ teeth are obviously quite sharp. I don’t think anyone expected to see Batman dead, never mind roasting on a spit with his boots still on.

What scared me even more was how Cortez had eyed Isabella when he saw her earlier in the episode. Given how Epifanio took that second taco like a submissive dog, I’m concerned about his ability to protect his own daughter.

If there’s one lesson to be learned, it’s don’t underestimate anyone on Queen of the South.
