Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14 Review: Schott Through the Heart

Poor Winn.

Unfortunately for him, tragic childhoods are a way of the world for members of a superhero series.

We knew his father was in prison for murder, but until Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14, we didn't know why his mom wasn't in his life.

Working With Mom - Supergirl

It's hard to blame him for being skeptical when she showed up after all these years. His father wasn't even in the ground yet when she waltzed in out of the blue at his funeral.

Who wouldn't be skeptical in that scenario?

I would sure find it hard to trust a woman I barely knew, especially moments after her ex-husband's casket just exploded in the middle of the cemetery.

Yet, despite that fact, she was welcomed into the DEO.

You guys remember it's that super-secret government organization that just about anyone can walk right into, including pizza delivery men.

But sure, let's go ahead and trust this woman who just showed up out of nowhere with all of our fancy equipment, and let her walk off on her own, unescorted, where she can grab a gun and head outside without anyone stopping her.

At least they appear to recognize the absurdity of all of this.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but it's like a top secret government facility in here.

Winn

They do remember the whole situation with Jeremiah that nearly tore this tight-knit family apart, right? Are they ever going to learn not to be quite so trusting?

Okay, so in this case at least, Mary turned out to be legit, which is great news for Winn. Still, it's hard not to poke holes in her story. I believe that she stayed away out of fear for her son's life, but in all that time that the Toyman was in prison, she never even risked a letter?

She's pretty smart, so you would think she could have found some way to send a card or encrypted email just to stay in touch. If the Toyman's apprentice was the only one keeping tabs on her, chances are she would have gotten away with it. But, I get that to her it probably wasn't worth the risk.

It just sucks how much time the two of them lost.

Comforting Winn - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14

Jeremy Jordan killed it with his performance.

Seriously, I had chills watching him confront Mary, holding back tears and just barely keeping it together. It was incredibly emotional, and it's been quite awhile since we've had a Winn-centric story in which he's been able to show off more than his singing voice and comedic timing. We need more of this!

When I lay in bed at night, staring up at the ceiling unable to sleep, I'm not wondering why dad finally, suddenly snapped. No, it doesn't haunt me. What haunts me is you. You left me when I needed you the most with no explanation, no goodbye.

Winn

This is Kara's story of course, but she has a family, and they need their time to shine as well. Alex gets her fair share of time in the sun, but it's a different ball game when we get to see the guys without superpowers or combat training take down the bad guys.

Winn's done it before, but something was satisfying about him and his mom taking down his father's apprentice while Kara and Mon-El struggled against a hoard of evil toys.

Father and Son - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14

After so many years of lost time, let's hope Winn and Mary's reunion isn't cut as short as J'onn and M'yrnn's appears to be.

Sadly, Martians suffer from dementia too, and they haven't found a cure for it yet either. M'yrnn has known about his condition for a while but hasn't been able to bring himself to tell J'onn. If Alex hadn't figured it out, who knows when he would have said something.

Maybe J'onn himself would have noticed the signs eventually, but it's always so much harder when it's someone you love. J'onn would have continued to ignore the signs or wave them off as flukes, as he did when M'yrnn couldn't come up with the word "wine."

Tackling dementia would be one the more serious storylines for the show to take on, and it'll be interesting to see just how much of the disease's progression we see onscreen.

J'onn has already lost so much; he deserves to get to make as many happy memories with his father as he can. Karaoke night was a good start.

Karaoke - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14

The karaoke was a lot of fun, but I wish we could have seen more of Alex singing (and a better song choice) since she missed out on the musical. At least now we know why Mon-El and J'onn did not sing during that crossover.

Was anyone else disappointed that no one sang any Bon Jovi?

We learned of Mon-El's love for the band on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 10, but he still chose a song by Kansas. Maybe he didn't want to butcher one of his favorite artists.

Still, you can't name an episode "Schott Through the Heart," feature not one but TWO karaoke scenes, and then not have a single character belt out "You Give Love a Bad Name."

Karaoke is not for the weak. It requires either great courage or a complete lack of shame, but I like it!

M'yrnn

Kara won karaoke night with her enthusiastic version of "Intergalactic." She's a woman of many talents.

Kara Karaoke - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 14

While I have no qualms at all about focusing on Winn, after such a long hiatus, we still had to wait for the very end to get any insight on the two big mysteries we were left with at the end of Supergirl Season 3 Episode 13

Lena has Sam in some sort of medical chamber, and that's literally all we know about that right now.

But, we also learned what Imra was keeping from Mon-El regarding why they were really here. The third WorldKiller, whom we have not met yet, will become Blight in the future. Stopping her now will save lives in the present AND the future.

It's hard to believe that Mon-El would not have been on board with that mission if Imra had been honest with him in the first place. Yes, going back to this time with Kara would be difficult for him, but he's a big picture guy now. We've seen how hesitant he was to say or do anything that would put the future at risk.

It's hard enough that he's back in Kara's time married to someone else, but now the two of them are getting close again while a rift is forming between him and Imra.

Whatever happens, I just don't want to see Kara get hurt again.

Your turn! Are you guys excited to have Supergirl back after such a long break? Did you enjoy the Winn-centric installment? Do you hope to see more of Laurie Metcalf in the future? Let us know in the comments!
