Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Princeton Offense

at .  Updated at .

Tandy's and Tyrone's powers are becoming stronger by the day. From the looks of their abilities on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5, they had an easier time accessing this time around!

The future Cloak & Dagger pushed themselves to channel the light and dark energy inside of them to some success. In particular, their touching abilities increased drastically in power. However, with the unpredictable increase, will they still be able to safely control it?

That's the big question we had after "Princeton Offense."

Pushing Her Limits - Cloak and Dagger

The mystery surrounding Roxxon Corp (or, in their potential rebrand, Roxxon Gulf) became less cloudy thanks to Greg's files.

Everything he had secured on the company before his death were the stepping stones that Tandy needed to put the pieces together. From the looks of her deduction scenes, she had figured out the trail that connected the villains.

The targets and the antagonists that we, as the viewers, needed to know from the overall story structure were revealed to guide us in the plot development.

This wasn't the first time that Cloak and Dagger cut through potential plot delays that other shows suffered with in the past. Whereas in a longer 22-24 episode season, there might've been an hour dedicated to each of the three individual Roxxon executives in the "file trident" before we got to Peter Scarborough.

Luckily, we bypassed their standalone stories to reach the main target. This structural move positively increased the pace of the series and focused on the target who truly mattered to the story.

Plus, we got a nice visual effect of Tandy creating the file trident in the church.

The decision to outline all the files in a connected path seemed to be done just to serve the tension. And, placing the face of Peter on a tablet in the middle of the trident made no sense. However, the visual served a powerful point to deliver the "ah-ha!" that the scene tried to elicit.

Following The Trail - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5

Tandy's story for Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5 focused solely on revenge.

After the blow-up with Tyrone in the church during Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4, she ignored her own advice to him and instead decided to use her powers to hunt down the villain.

It's quite a hypocritical decision if you think about it. She chastised him for wanting to take down Connors when all she did here was use it to hunt down Peter.

We witnessed her breaking into the locker with her blade, lying her way into the party and then using the hope touch to peer into the minds of the Roxxon executives. Her actions were fueled by the need to get retribution for the people in her life who were hurt by the company.

Tandy's development took a complete directional change after she attempted suicide.

You could hear it in her words to Tyrone; she felt liberated and determined to use her powers to get what she wanted. Tandy was a solo anti-hero before Tyrone, and now after her eyes were opened by the files, she was falling back into bad habits.

If this were any other superhero show, she would sound like a villain herself. However, the Cloak and Dagger heroes are a complicated pair, so the recent push in her motivation suits her reckless use of the powers.

Tyrone: What are you doing at a Roxxon event?
Tandy: Digging. Trying to find the mystery man at the center of everything.
Tyrone: When you say “dig,” do you mean root around in people’s heads?
Tandy: Why do you care?
Tyrone: I’m here because of you. You’ve been experimenting. Alright, with your hope-y touchy thing.
Tandy: Why? Why does that matter?!
Tyrone: It matters because you checked too many books out of the library. You and I are connected, and because you’re using your s***, mine has been going haywire all night and it’s your fault.

Speaking of her powers, Tandy got quite good at channeling her inner abilities. The white blade was called upon a few times during "Princeton Offense" and she easily peered into the minds of the executives.

All of the vision scenes were a lot of fun to watch because they provided plenty of information about the executives.

They didn't get any lines, but we learned a bit about them to get a sense of where they stood in the organization and what they wanted. In particular, two of them wanted Peter dead while the other wanted to sleep with him.

Though, in most cases when it comes to connected energies, the more you use something it causes an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, it was Tyrone's powers going haywire.

Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5 started to show the extent of how connected their powers truly were.

He couldn't rein in or control his abilities too much since she was overusing her abilities. While the duo barely talked or touched in the short time we've known them, their powers still had a connection that binds them together.

This development proves that, regardless of the distance or circumstance, their abilities are linked to the same energy and reacts based on the decisions they make separately AND together.

My father worked for Roxxon since he was out of college. When he had an accident, Roxxon paid my bills, put me through school, and helped me continue Dad’s work of finding energy from under the earth that was actually good for what was on top of it. My name is Mina Hess, and I’m working with Roxxon Gulf to save the world.

Mina

Were you surprised that Tandy didn't kill Peter Scarborough?

Her backing away from the mysterious executive was a complete change from what she originally planned to do. She had him in her grasp and could've easily killed him with the white dagger. But, she stuck with her better judgment and didn't take his life.

She chose to stick to her morals than to succumb to the desire for revenge. It's an honorable move we can respect; she's not a killer.

This could be a decision she comes to regret, especially with what we saw in the dream world. His hopes were all about stealing money from dead bodies in the ocean; that's pretty messed up, even for a villain like himself.

Hopefully, whatever plan she has in mind with Mina Hess, it will take him down once and for all. Peter may be the big bad in her sights, but who knows if there is an even bigger network of individuals involved in what happened to her father/the rig explosion.

Boyfriend And Girlfriend? - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5

Claps for Brigid O'Reilly! Her manipulation tactics worked at getting her an opening into Connors' secret drug dealings. She's done more than most cops on TV shows lately.

Even though we don't know much about her, she's turning into a favorite character. She took Tyrone at his word that he saw Connors selling drugs and that he was involved in his brother's death. Most people would've brushed it off, but she dug deep and kept looking into it.

Her going undercover to spy on Connors could be dangerous in the long-run.

We've already seen him try to kill Tyrone, and he wouldn't hesitate killing Detective O'Reilly either if she got in the way.

I have a feeling her hook-up buddy on the police force could be a casualty in this mess since we were introduced to their fling. Brigid had a good head on her shoulders; she'll protect him if she gets in too deep.

Also, now we know what happened to Liam! (Geez Tandy, did you forget that you left your boyfriend behind bars?!)

Star Player - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5

Tyrone's story focused more on his inner struggle during one of the biggest moments in his life.

The turmoil he felt over Billy's death came right back around to mess with his mind. He needed to focus on winning the big game, but he didn't feel worthy or satisfied with completing the match. Billy was never going to have that opportunity, and it hurt him.

You could see the disappointment and conflict that Tyrone had on his face. The basketball star never looked happy, except in the final seconds when he lost the game and saw the joy from the other team. It almost seemed like he planned the loss on purpose.

The pressure was getting too much for him. Meeting expectations and hopes have been weighing him down for a while, long before Tandy came back into the picture.

It's not a surprise that his touch is all about looking into someone's fear. He's filled with them.

High School Drama - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5

The basketball game was a peculiar match because his powers were reacting and the referee kept favoring the other team. Had he not been throwing people off when they touched him, would he have done so well up until then?

After a single touch, the opposing team looked to be dazed and confused. His power must've been strong at that point; their minds opened up to show Tyrone everything. And we learned a lot about minor characters we will never see again.

Some of the characters had strange fears of being attacked, someone going into war, and family members going after them. The basketball game was an eye-opening experience and an interesting move plot-wise.

We forget a lot of times that minor characters are, in essence, their own characters with backstories not involved with the main storyline.

In most cases they're never explored beyond the single lines they deliver. I enjoyed taking a closer look into their minds because it added depth and personalities to roles that wouldn't get the same treatment in other shows.

Tyrone: You didn’t have to do all this.
Tandy: I can’t take the credit.
[Tyrone is startled]
Tyrone: What the hell are you doing here? The last I saw you, you were calling me a “choir boy.”
Tandy: Yeah, well, the last time I saw you, you were storming out my church like one. Sorry I got my harsh on.
Tyrone: Seriously, what are you doing here?
Tandy: I come bearing good news.
Tyrone: What’s that?
Tandy: I did it. I controlled it. I made it happen. Check it.
[The white blade appears in her hand]
Tyrone: Can you not?! Not here.
Tandy: What... but here is interesting. Tyrone Johnson in his natural habitat. Hey, I don’t know if Betty or Veronica decorated your locker, but she’s in it to win it!

Evita and Tyrone took their relationship to a whole new level. Were you surprised they moved this fast already?

Sure, she's had a crush on him all this time. And he definitely liked her too, regardless of him being shy about it. They had the feelings, but they hadn't defined their relationship before now.

Giving her the letterman jacket was a trivial high school ritual that eliminated all doubts and worries they might've had. Though, this probably was fueled by Evita calling Tyrone her "friend." People always want what they think they lost. (Smart move, Evita. Smart move.)

Hopefully, Tyrone doesn't hurt her, and he gives it his all in this relationship.

His personality up until now had come across as distant and disinterested. Tyrone showed more interest to the unpredictable nature of Tandy as compared to his life at St. Sebastian's high school. The pressure of his parents' expectations and winning the big game were throwing him off.

If he's going deeper into this relationship, he can't lead Evita on. He needs to be invested just as much as she is.

Evita: You are so dense.
Tyrone: What are you talking about?
Evita: I know.
Tyrone: You know what?
Evita: What you did... with that ref... and the other team. I told you. I paid attention.
[She opens up her jacket to reveal a bra]
Evita: I know who you are.
[They kiss]

Was your mind blown that Dwayne knew about Connors killing Billy? My jaw hit the floor.

Both Adina and Tyrone were happy thinking that one of Billy's friends succeeded in his career. The location had all the presentation of being an upstanding business he started as an adult. However, we know better that it's actually a front to help with drug dealing.

Now that the truth has been uncovered, the bigger question now is: What is Tyrone going to do about it?

Beyond Brigid, Dwayne is a connection to Connors. Tyrone could use this to explore what else the mysterious cop had been doing illegally. This could either work out well for him or it could lead him deeper into trouble.

Pep Rally - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 5

What did you think of "Princeton Offense"? What plan does Tandy have up her sleeve regarding Mina? Will Tyrone confront Dwayne about the drug business? Is Liam going to be stuck behind bars forever?
